Not counting this year:
- Since 2010 LSU is 60-17 (10-3) and ND is 55-23 (9-4)
- Since 2012 LSU is 36-16 (avg 9-4) and ND is 39-13 (avg 10-3)
With all of the recruiting advantages at LSU, I just don't see how this would be anything but a step backwards. I have heard Kelly referred to as a CEO and I would agree with that. Notre Dame needed/benefited from the CEO-type improvements Kelly brought:
- training table, music in the stadium, primetime games, Shamrock Series, field turf, Irish Invasion, analysts on staff, Showtime "Season With", stadium renovations and jumbotron (not clear his role); how much of this is Jack Swarbrick who knows but I assume it's a great partnership
- improved recruiting
- Offense YPP up every year until this year which is down to 2nd best year
- 2010 - 5.52
- 2011 - 5.93
- 2012 - 5.99
- 2013 - 6.07
- 2014 - 6.11
- 2015 - 7.26
- 2016 - 6.40
I feel he has improved the staff more often than not despite some loyalty that has made changes take a little too long:
- Elston has improved recruiting (organization, offers, results, etc)
- I believe Denson has improved RB coaching and FLA recruiting
- HH
- Gilmore (need to see what happens now - I suspect improvement)
- analysts have helped with option D and some on STs
ND has one of the top 5 rosters and top 5 2017 classes as measured by recruiting offers.
No one is perfect and Kelly must own the mistakes he has made. I just think he has earned the trust to watch what happens next. He shouldn't have a free pass but I think he has shown enough to warrant some trust.
Win on Saturday and Kelly deserves support. Lose, and well, nevermind.
Read IE daily but not a big poster. Just feel like Kelly has earned/deserves these next few weeks to prove/disprove his worth.
