Kirk Herbstreit on Jaylon Smith: "he's the one guy that looks like a Florida State guy on that defense."— Irish Illustrated (@NDatRivals) October 18, 2014

here is the tweet

This is such an asinine statement. First the "high school D" comment from a few year's back, now this? Who the fuck from ND pissed in his Cheerios? There are times I want to like Herbstreit, but then he says ridiculous shit like that.

SMH. What an ignorant thing to say.

Just from listening to the things he says over the years, I've gotten the sense that Herbstreit has some resentment toward ND because he feels like for most of his career he was forced to talk about ND games that had no impact on the national college football picture purely because ND was a popular program with a huge fanbase. I think he is one of those people who is just sick of ND's historical overexposure and wants us to be bad so he doesn't have to talk about us any more, even though the chatter about ND is more justifiable now than it's been in the past because we are better. It's subtle, but that's the impression I've gotten.

Well, tough $hit, Herbie. We're not going anywhere.

Don't forget TAMU, their defense is worse than pretty much every team you listed.

The only thing that we wouldn't get is the constant bump of opponents that the SEC gets... they all play no one (for the most part) but each other, all win their BS games, get to 8 plus wins and their games against each other look like massive contests.

"He is the one guy that looks like a Florida State guy on that defense..... everyone else looks better."

{Obviously I'm NOT meaning this regarding Jaylon --- just necessary to shove the point up Herbie's butt. }

Good stuff. Man he plays fast, with as much as BVG likes to blitz his LB's that will suite Bilal perfectly.

Really elite closing speed. His ceiling is incredibly high. From what I've seen, needs to work on everything else. If he has the drive and heart for football he could be an All-American level player... I think he has the lowest floor of our 3 LBs though.

Yea and he's going to have to be really dedicated to the weights because it's a lot easier to play fast when your hitting somebody smaller than you. At his current weight there a quite a few college QB's that are bigger than him, lol.

Question: Does Asmar RS?

I say hopefully because he could really use 1 year just to gain strength.

Whoa....like Lax said, his closing speed is unreal. He does need some work and development but he has PLENTY of talent to work with. I have a feeling BVG is gonna love coaching this kid up.

Thanks for sharing GB.

I don't see why he'd have to play unless he exceeds expectations his freshman year and we can't keep him off the field because he's just too good to sit. Plus it's not like we're thin at OLB and Jaylon will never come off the field unless he's hurt.

Maybe he could be a special teams stud his freshman year tho...I could definitely see that happening with the speed he has. Seems like he'd be a great gunner on punt coverage.

But I'm with you, he could probably use a year to get coached up and get his weight and strength up as well.

I brought it up because I was thinking about ST's. BK seems to love getting some of these ATH's playing time on ST's right away.

Really, really excited about this guy. Even though Koon isn't because he hasn't seen a bod pic

This film has changed some of my previous opinions on this kids game. This is what I was looking to see and though was missing from other film I saw....getting down hill, playing with more aggression and attacking..both through traffic, and through the ball carrier on contact.
I like this...

Well, that's debatable. We've got Jaylon, Schmidt and Onwualu/Councell right now. As much as I like Onwualu, he's got a loooooong way to go to be a difference maker as a LB. Councell can't stay healthy. Randolph hasn't made any impact yet. Turner hasn't seen much action. Morgan and Martini will both have chances to be pretty good, but that still doesn't mean there is a bunch of depth.

So while Jaylon and Joe are great, I'd say OLB is particularly thin and unproven.

Yea, I thought about that as I was posting and I don't know. But if BK wants him on special teams then I'm all for it. Our special teams as a whole seems to have improved this year so if BK thinks it benefits the team to put Asmar out there then I can't really argue with that. Plus, if he is just a special teams player his freshman year then he should still be able to lift and develop as an OLB since special teams isn't particularly taxing and he wouldn't really be playing a high volume of snaps.

I dont know though. It's an interesting question.

I'm thinking more along the lines of Jaylon not coming off the field at all next year but I get what you're saying. There's some depth there...but not necessarily proven depth. I was thinking Randolph (unproven, as you said), Martini (who has looked good in his limited action), Concell (not even guaranteed to be asked back), Grace (again, no guarantee to be asked back and who knows how the broken leg affects his play) and then Barajas (who obviously hasn't even seen any college action yet) would be the next ones up if Jaylon goes out.

That's where I see Asmar playing but I guess he could play Onwualu/Turner's position too. And like you said they (mostly Onwualu) haven't played bad but aren't AA's like Jaylon either so I get what your post is saying. There's depth at the LB positions...just not proven depth.

We'll have to see how it all plays out but I think Asmar's best bet at PT his freshman year will obviously be special teams unless there's a couple injuries across the board at the LB positions.

He's wiry but plays strong. Looks like the kind of kid that'll pack on fifteen pounds of solid mass as soon as he smells a college weight room. He'll never be a thick backer but he'll be fine.

Won tonight. Moving on to the state finals against Carmel. I think they have a real good chance to win even though they'll be underdogs. Carmel is a bit soft.

I prefer my carmel to be soft. Soft and smooth...like a Rolo. The hard camel just ends up stuck in your teeth and it's just annoying.
