Mrs. Tillery had some interesting comments after his visit this weekend, too quote a few:

"“I’m shameless, and like I told Jerry when we were at Ole Miss for the Alabama game, I asked him what would happen if he hurt himself like that guy from Alabama (Kenyan Drake) did that required orthopedic surgery,” said Mildred. “I told him we would be 16 hours from home and there would not be anything we could do about it. He just got very quiet."

“I think the distance and the scenery make it a tough decision. Jerry is a big momma’s boy and somebody has always been there for Jerry. That’s one thing that makes it tough with it (Notre Dame) being so far from home.”

What happens when Tillery gets drafted by the Buffalo Bills or the Seattle Seahawks and he tears his ACL like many football players do? I'm for people leaving the nest if given the opportunity. It did wonders for me. I would not be in the position I am in or the man that I am without having my Dad push me into the military.

The good news is he is an EE so this can't drag out the entire month of January.

You're preaching to the choir here. I'm just trying to help Ray see the other side.

NOLAIrish has written up some great posts on this subject, but most SEC schools can freely transfer football players from athletic to academic scholarship because the university-wide standard for scholarship qualification is so low. So while they definitely force under-performing kids off the football team, it doesn't look like many are actually pulling scholarships or kicking them out of school.

How much more respected is ND than LSU in Louisiana? It's probably reversed, in fact.

If you expect your child to settle down in his home state, what value is a cosmopolitan alumni network?

The idea that a mother should seek to maximize the worldly success of her children (at the expense of in-group loyalty) is bourgeois and liberal. And I chose such divisive words because there are communities and cultures which reject that idea outright on those very grounds. I don't know if the Tillerys come from such a culture, but it certainly applies to much of SEC country.

I can't specifically speak for LSU in this case, but I'd be willing to wager it's similar to Ohio State's value in Ohio. Since it's arguably the most common education people have, the alumni network is almost meaningless and respect for the school takes a distant second place to the demonstrated merits of the individual. No one cares that you went to OSU---so did everyone else. It neither hurts nor helps.

I would hope that she realizes that it's just as likely he goes somewhere else as Louisiana. All it takes is meeting the right girl, finding the right job (or being drafted by the right team), or being accepted into the right graduate program and all of that expectation about coming home goes out the window.

Of course, if he goes to LSU and doesn't excel as a student on his own merits or as an athlete, he could wind up, as so many of my generation have, back in his parents' basement. Perhaps that's the plan? (Not that that's impossible at ND either).

That's really why I'm not too concerned. If he walks we'll have plenty of time to find someone else, especially if we continue to play great football.

I'm calling BS on Mrs. Tillery's quote.

She's definitely running cover. Keep the local pressure at bay by saying all of the "right" things out in the open.

Behind closed doors, the Tillerys are all fist-bumping at the star treatment and VIP trips Jerry gets to take to LSU and soon A&M, and laughing maniacally at the false hope LSU has.

Being that they were sixteen-hours away, the ND Jet could come down an pick them up with NCAA approval, and bring him to wherever Jerry was having surgery, ND staff would make sure it was the best, and they would be put up comfortably for the duration. Then Jerry would rehab in one of the proven best programs in the country, be given every opportunity to return, and if that wasn't in the cards he would still get one of the finest educations in his field of endeavor in the entire world.

So that is what would happen.

If the question is really about apron strings . . .

I'm pretty sure the NCAA won't allow the school to provide transportation and lodging for parents of current players. The Hoges could put them up I guess, but the plane tickets would be on them. Someone correct me if there are special allowances for injured players.

Schools have a fund for thus. That is where the insurance payments are coming from in the case of some of these athletes.

When I started to read the quote from his ma, my first thought was she was going to say, "So, son, you never know how long football will last -- and it will end someday, sooner or later -- and you best be prepared for that by having made the right call on that '40 year decision' Coach Kelly was talking about."

But then, I have that liberal bourgeois mindset Whiskey was talking about.

Dartmouth

I see the man likes academically elite schools in the middle of nowhere which possess world-class alumni networks...

Dartmouth is the anti-LSU, haha. I think his head's in the right place. He's just having some fun at the local state school before deciding that it's not in his best interest to spend his college education doing nothing else to the exclusion of his academic betterment.

Probably a lot different. Dartmouth and ND are a lot alike aside from the athletic prowess. Houston is nothing like ND aside from division 1 sports.

I wouldn't feel nearly as miffed if a recruit picked Dartmouth. They're like a secular ND populated entirely by Long Islanders.

Sorry, should have used Italics. Didn't think it was necessary....I stand corrected ;)

Actually he had always heard about the leaves turning in New England. Now he can cross that off his list.
