Lost in the Bama comparison on speed is the fact that the Bama players are disciplined. That's why a RS freshman can come in and make an impact. Yes... speed matters and it does help. But proper angles, playing with discipline on your assignment, and knowing where you go instinctively closes that gap. If you happen to have speed to go with all those things then you will probably have a great defense.

Last year the Irish were not that much faster. But they were successful. Why? Everyone seemed to know their assignment, went without hesitation, and put themselves in position to make the play. This year's team... they need to work more on that.

It's not just a missing Manti thing, this has been an issue for years. It's an issue across the board on defense. Blaming Farley, Zeke, Grace, Councel, Fox, Calabrece, etc., for being 'bad angle takers' is far fetched. Just my opinion. It's an athleticism issue.

I buy the argument that we don't recruit fast players and that's the issue more than I buy that we recruit players who think too much and don't take strong angles.

So, if we don't recruit fast players, Jaylon isn't fast enough to play linebacker for us? I suppose it's his lack of speed that's holding back his development right now. Don't get me wrong, I like Jaylon and he's going to be special, but Kelly has pointed out that he's been out of position at times and has made some mental mistakes. It takes time to get the mental aspect of the game down. He's not slow by any means, and physically he's a freak. It's not just about taking bad angles, because they do take good ones. It's about playing disciplined, knowing your position and the responsibilities of your other teammates, reading the offense, etc. Theres a lot of mental aspects of the game that go on before and after the snap.

Zeke wasn't considered a burner either, and he struggled a bit in his younger years when he saw the field. He was pretty good his Senior year though, aside from probably the Alabama game. He understood the position more, and it allowed him to make more plays and get our secondary into position to win.

Diaco must go if he doesn't clean up the defense

It wouldn't be so bad if we could figure out how to defend mobile QBs. We did pretty good against Denard last year, but aside from that? (I'm not going to count Navy there since the option is predicated on mostly running the QB from the start. Diaco struggled his first year there too though)

The defense has felt like it's regressed a bit though, where we should have been about as good or possibly better this season. Some of it has been poor play calling from Diaco. That Michigan game plan was horrible for starters. It seemed like we didn't make many or any decent adjustments at the half, and we should have been keying on Gallon the way he was taking us to the woodshed. The Michigan State game was our best defensive performance, and they had arguably a horrible offense.

I'll take the later. One player does not a defense make. Plus, this team is supposidely built with defense in mind. That philosophy doesn't work too well when they give up 41 points. #53 scoring defense doesn't cut it.
