Not sure about the statement but he was a very good S&C coach when he first came to ND. In the first few years we saw significant improvements across the board and many guys will give a lot of credit to Longo. My assumption is there was some health problems and his performance deteriorated faster than the staff could grasp.

probably macular degeneration which is a failrly common cause of blindness in older people. No cure if it advances past a certain point.

To be fair though, that comment came just a few years away from the coaching staff getting gutted.

And if you take the non-fan perspective, and think about it as a profession, there are over 770 college football teams, each with multiple S&C coaches. That's 200+ S&C coaches. So getting the head ND job in the modern era, and having a team get to the NC game after having a Cincy team go 12-0, arguably puts you in that top 1% without too much controversy.

Well, I don't think size is really how you'd judge it. In 2012 our DL was massive with Tuitt, Nix, and KLM. I think the depth of the program is what has really taken a pretty big leap recently. And a lot of that is recruiting as well as S&C. We certainly can't give all the early success to Longo but he probably deserves more than he gets. Longo was the S&C coach for some pretty big time talent transformations. Significant growth for guys like Eifert, Harrison Smith, Will Fuller, Zach Martin, and Ronnie Stanley just to name a handful. None of those guys were ranked out of HS as 1st rd talent yet turned into it while at ND. Again, that's probably some parts scouting, coaching, and training. We're certainly in a better place today that we were in 2016 but I think the end of Longo's tenure has left some fans with an unfair opinion of his work early on.
