I just read stats that Toledo and Columbus are center for a (white) slavery ring that abducts girls and sells them into to pimps for a life of forced prostitution. Depressed economy and central location both add to this.
I saw a national true crime TV show that showcased an incident where a young girl was abducted, with little response from the police. The parents found from her friends rumors of where she was being held, and again called the police. She was one being held at a local brothel and being sold. The father told the police he was going over to get his daughter.
He walked up to the front door of the place and demanded his daughter. They ended up beating him within an inch of his life, and left him for dead in the yard. He had multiple broken bones including a fractured skull. When the police showed up to secure the scene for the ambulance, they attempted to arrest the father. The EMT's stopped it. Then they arrested him for trespassing at the hospital!
As soon as this transpired, someone with some intelligence contacted the police chief. He took over management. They got a tactical team to swarm the place, free the girl, and arrest those responsible. They even found out who was on the inside of their blue payroll. A few heads rolled, but that was business as usual in "Holy Toledo."
At a local parish with a very Irish tradition, (OLPH) a repeated pedophile priest had been moved in as an assistant on the staff. He had been charged and moved several times. The pastor was a good priest with connections to my family. His next move was to molest the wrong kid.
The kid was not as needy as most victims, and he had an uncle who was a captain on the police department. There were several tense moments when the captain had a drawn weapon centered on the crouching molester. The pastor stepped between, and attempted to diffuse the scene. The captain reconsidered his course, and as he un-cocked his weapon, he told the pastor to tell the powers that be that they had 24 hours to handle the situation, or that he would come back and that there was no place any of them could hide. He would finish the job. This former priest was one of the few guys charged and defrocked, and he was out of there that afternoon!
Of course there was the nationally famous case of the priest that murdered the nun in the Sacristy of the hospital chapel in a sick psycho-sexual ritualistic manner, and then presided over her funeral. He was only charged years later. In the legal forays with and about this case, and four of the major actors in this, both from the county prosecutorial arm, and from the church, and defense side are acquaintences or friends that go back many years; there was so much dirt not uncovered with this case that it is amazing there was any news of the trial was revealed at all!
One of the most interesting tidbits is there was a major legal battle after the diocese and the bishop were served a search warrant for certain documentation known to be in the possession of the bishop. Also with that was a list of the abortions paid for by the church as a result of indiscretions of priests with nuns, and laypersons. Some of the laypersons were young teens, others married women. This includes the "Joy Boys," which were from a particular order that runs one of the high schools in town. Their high flying sex, alcohol, and drug fueled partying led to their nickname. They had a really high frequency of appearing on the list. Also, there were records of priests regularly transferred to "stay ahead of salacious charges."
