I don't understand. How could this have been taken out of context??

Q. Will you be getting your degree?
A. (the one Tuitt gave)

Like Clausen and others, he could've meant that he was coming back in his off time to finish remaining credits. It's not a hard stretch.

Good grief, more drama. Why O' why does it seem like we are the Lindsey Lohan of college football.

If so that reporter should be canned. You don't publish something with the headline "Stephon Tuitt will return for senior season" without asking the follow-up question "So you're coming back to play at ND next year?"

Poor student reporter, trying to break his first giant story and he jumped the gun. Didn't have anything more than one quote, with no context and no elaboration. As a journalism graduate, I feel for the guy. But I would've never published that without more to go on haha.

I will say though, before we all call for his head, that he was technically within his guidelines to publish. He probably got excited about getting the quote and ran with it before thinking that maybe it's just lip-service from Tuitt, kind of like "Why do you assume I'm not staying. I could leave, but I'm only a junior so maybe I'll stay."

It was a mistake to publish IMO, but I can understand running the story based on concrete "guidelines," especially since it was a direct quote. It's more of a judgement call than anything, and the thought of breaking his first gigantic story affected his judgement poorly.

Yeah for serious. Hard to get that mad at an amateur, but this just reeks of poor journalism and/or hearing what he wanted to hear.

Yep. No need to "call for his head," but understand that things get said that seem like a big scoop but that might need a little more fleshing out. This would seem like one of those cases.
(I say this as alum of The Observer, a professional journalist for ten years, and someone who's been in a similar situation many times.)

Also understand that Tuitt may well have said this but not realized his words would be on ESPN within the half-hour, and not intended it as any official pronouncement of his future so much as his opinion today.

Its hard to take that piece from The Observer seriously. If there was any substance to him having a decision made, there would have been a story. Instead, it was a quote that lacked any type of substance.

I dont know any kid who would be in Tuitt's position right now having any clue on what they would want to do halfway through their JR year. He could have 10 sacks in the next 6 games and that decision is pretty easy or he could play similiar to how he has during the first 6 and have a tough decision.

The story was not handled well at all and puts Tuitt in a tough situation with it going national so quick.

I don't take anything from the quotes or the tweet. Still a lot of football to be played.

All this = distractions

No time for that this week.

+1.

As fans, let us try not to turn this into a big story. The focus is USC and the big recruiting weekend. Worry about Tuitt leaving/staying after the bowl game.

I don't care that the reporter got excited. What a complete moron. First, creating a distraction this week. Second, taking away a big decision that maybe Tuitt wanted to come out with like Manti did - you know, making an announcement. A quote from the article:

"Stephon has not decided what he is going to do," Tuitt-Bartlett wrote to the Tribune. "What he meant to say was that school is the focal point and he will get his degree from ND."

It isn't the responsibility of a reporter to not create a distraction just because it is the week of a rivalry game. And it may be a distraction on irishenvy.com, but most likely not at the Gug.
