No, not Watt. But concussions symptoms are nothing to play with a-la Danny Spond.

As far as Jarron, its his first camp in a role where he has to be physically and mentally ready each day. Last year, it was just making sure he was ready to be able to go this year. Lynch, Tuitt, Ishaq, Day kind of spoiled ND nation with being able to make game changing plays right off the bat. Having guys sit a year is not a horrible thing at all. Its a beautiful thing. Depth is there, and it allows them to develop and mature. A guy like Rochell would be amazing to see sit this year out. I highly doubt it happens, but getting a year on scout team vs first team O and getting his body/strength up to par would pay major dividends.

All of this is true, but what's your take on Jarron's attitude and drive, or whatever you want to call it? There's been skepticism from fans on his motivation and work ethic, and recent reports from camp are that he's satisfied with just standing up with the OL.

Two takeaways...Cant wait to see Amir on the field, his cut in that video was nasty and it looks like he is fully healthy and primed for a big season.
Loved seeing GAIII run with low pad level and lower his shoulder into contact. Looking good!

Just feel sick for Danny. His play last year was spectacular IMO and with all the things he had going against him made it all that much more spectacular. I know it was probably one of the more difficult decisions he has had to make, but it was certainly the right one. You only get one life, don't risk it.

So far the fall practices have seemed very difficult to follow. I will say from the short clips we have gotten, the WR corp looks much deeper than what I can ever remember. It seems like there are 5-6 guys that will make some nice plays and really help Tommy as long as he goes through his progressions and hits his check down options. I am really not shocked at all about Cole Luke's rise in the depth chart. I think a lot of us were guilty of overlooking how important of a pick-up he was, myself included. Almost there fellas, we will know very soon exactly what we got.

I just searched google and I guess he did. MRI was negative. I'm not sure if I never read that or if I did and my brain chose not to retain it. It's been a long week.

Read on Twitter that TODAY (08.17.13) He was very disruptive and blew all concerns out the door after practice.

With that read.. I will say Tuitt is "cool"?

SOURCE: I wanna say Eric Hanson of SBT. Don;t quote me though.

I wonder if we can get 22 of those fat sumo suits, have all the starters wear them, and maybe we can avoid anymore injuries before we get to Temple. I'd love to see the practice video of it.

Based on what TP said and practice reports, I would guess Watt is the one who is "unofficially" seriously hurt.

As far as Carlisle not being in the slot, I see that as a great reflection on Chris Brown. From TP's comments, he's been doing so well that TJ got moved to the slot in a "get the best guys on the field" move, and so Carlisle got bumped back to RB so that he would see the field more.

I love the idea of TJ in the slot. I think he can have an even bigger there than he could have had on the outside. Also love that that means CB will be seeing some serious PT. I'm very optimistic about the offense breaking out this year.

TP,

To go along with what you said about Chris Brown, he saw a lot of meaningful first team reps in the outside. I know you stated that he would see a lot of time in the slot but I actually hope that's where TJ is moved. All reports from those reps today were extremely positive. TJ is such a precise route runner, it's a natural fit. Chris brown has so much speed on the outside that you almost have to shadow him with a safety. DD is the best pure WR on this team and requires attention. That leaves a senior wide receiver matched up against a line backer an awful lot. Like our chances.

Really excited to see Ben Koyack this year. I think the light has gone on for him this off season. In line blocking has been great and has a soft set of hands. Really look for him to showcase a lot of impressive skills this year.

Great news about Luke and Butler. When young guys can come in over the summer and push the veterans (Wood) immediately, that's big news. Just think of it this way, Wood went from being a starting CB opposite Jackson, to maybe a special teams specialist. Russell has All-American potential as a true sophomore and these young guys are pushing for the nickel role. Competition is a beautiful thing.

Councell will almost undoubtedly start at the DOG position with the sad news of Spond coming through, but by mid season I think Jaylon takes that spot. ISD guys were referencing Jaylons physical attributes after practice yesterday and said he's built like a college junior and is thicker in the legs already then Ben. He's great in coverage already and it's near impossible to get outside of him. That's DOG responsibilities in a nutshell so if he's great at those things already, writings on the wall.

Springman loss is bigger than people realize at this point. Maybe the light comes on for Jarron and maybe Isaac shows he's ready to play as a freshman, but maybe neither of those are the case. Springman was a proven commodity. Now you burn a redshirt on a guy like Rochell when you didn't really wanna do that. Tough loss.

Everything I've heard about Watt is not serious enough to jeopardize Temple. He's fine.

Excited to see how the safety situation plays out. Again, competition breeds champions. Cliche but very true. Shumate knows he needs to show up everyday and that's important.

Love this team after two weeks. Excited for Temple preparation to start.

Ramblings:

Camp seems to be going well this year without the drama of the off-season. I'm not too worried about Tuitt's weight, like hearing Kelly re: Day, and feel that the loss of Springmann is going to be felt-Hopefully Jarron can step up and Rochelle is any version of Day last year. Depth on that line is crucial.

Secondary is critical-If the D plays more man coverage, eventually they'll get beat and I hope that the confidence I see will carry them past those (hopefully very few) instances. The depth at CB and S is exciting.

It will be interesting to see how the LB positions shake out during the last few weeks of camp and the beginning quarter of the season. Councell or Smith? Grace playing full time? Should be great to see how these players develop.

OL: Like most on IE, I feel pretty satisfied how these guys are doing. Battling Nix, Day, and Tuitt full time in practice has to toughen up that group. I hope this battling, their conditioning and the coaching that Heistand has done will prepare the team to run the ball down the throat of many (if not all) teams on ND's schedule. This brings up the RB position battle. Pleased to see nobody has yet been picked as the #1. I hope this means that the freshman have been pushing the elders. That competition can only improve the team.

WR/TE: I'm looking forward to a rumbling, stumbling, 270 pound Niklas run over a secondary. Also looking for Brown to break out, DD prove his consistency, and TJ to show me more than precise route running.

Pleased on the optimism over this camp. Coaches seem confident and the team, by all accounts, is practicing the right way.

Bring on the Owls!

Yeah, I think it's true that the Springmann loss is huge because, besides Kona, he is the only backup DL who has proven what he can do. As a guy who can play anywhere on the DL, a position group where we lack depth, it's a terrible loss.

I do think that Rochell was going to play anyway this year. He's come into camp in great shape and may be ahead of Jarron. Then there's Utupo ... I've been hearing good things since the spring and he may be ahead of Jarron too. So I'm not sure how much we have to depend on Jarron, but obviously we all hope that the light comes on for him sooner rather than later, since he certainly has the athletic ability and size to be a force. He's just got to develop that mean streak.

By the way, in the 247 recap of Kelly's presser Kelly was quoted as saying that Ishaq would be the "first split-side end in [off the bench] ... he won't play the stud position." Anyone familiar with this terminology? The split-side end ... is that the weak or wide side end? And "stud position" ... other teams use that term to mean an OLB/DE hybrid. Does Kelly mean CAT here? If so, what is he saying? Is he saying that barring an injury to Shembo or something of that nature, Ishaq will go in at DE before CAT? The 247 recap didn't post the exact language of the question Kelly was answering, so that may be why I'm confused, but I don't get what he was saying.

Any possibility Jarron gets moved to NT and Kona slides over to DE? Jarron is a big body who I think could bat down a lot of balls. And from the practice clips I saw Kona has gotten much quicker, a better fit for DE IMO.

I don't see that happening. The #2 NT will play a very important role this year and I doubt, from everything we have heard, that Jones has proven capable of filling that role. I think a move to NT in the future is possible for Jones, but not this season.

Maybe a gradual move? Kona's done after this year, correct? Jones could be huge for us in '14, especially if he gets some experience at the spot this year.

FWIW, when Jones was in in the spring game, he was a DT with a 4 man front.

Yeah CB is on the outside. I think it says a lot of about his progression that they can move TJ inside. There are a lot of different combos they are roll out there, so itll be interesting to see how the maximize getting guys on the field.

CB has really worked hard on getting in and out of his breaks on routes, and its really paying off. Its night and day compared to last year, and thats part of his emergence. He is doing things he couldnt do last year and something he wasnt able to do in the spring even. I think that his improved route running and finer details to routes will keep the defense honest, and play to Rees strengths.

Safety is the position I'm most concerned about on the defensive side of the ball. Having some seasoned CBs wil help. I hope that Shumate can get some experience in game will help, but there's questions in the pass game with him. Maybe Eilar Hardy can take the next step in his progression, or maybe Max Redfield steps up as well. Farley is gonna give you consistent play and veteran play, but it remains to be seen if he can make game changing plays, and thats what the defense needs this year from the secondary.

Safety worries me against good teams. USC will test our secondary with their speed with Lee an Agholar.

The 15+ lbs of muscle that Brown added will help shed man to man coverage.

I'm really concerned about our second team DL. I was before Springman and now that really hurts. We have some talent in the wings but its all unknown. Rochelle LOOKS great thus far. JJ has taken steps but have a combined ZERO college game experiance. Lot of promise but I'm concerned.

Just to confirm, we don't even know conclusively if Springmann will miss more than Temple, right...?
