We're crossing over arguments here, some are talking as a future NFL prospect and some aren't.

Chubler was talking NFL prospect so I mentioned how Williams wasn't drafted very high.

I'll definitely agree Jesse Williams was a good college player.

I'm pretty sure Nick Saban, Kirby Smart and T Town Tommy would disagree with you. You can add NDWorld247 to that list as well. Importance to college team has very little correlation to NFL draft position.

And....the question we should be focused on in this thread for the next few days is, who will likely be the next to commit after Corey Holmes.

Agree... and agree.

I didn't read it as "a 5th round draft pick isn't anything special". My apologies. While we're on the subject, Williams' drop was one of the big surprises of this year's draft as he was projected by almost everyone as a late-1st to mid-2nd round pick. Concerns over his knee resulted in a huge fall. I think he's going to be a stud for Seattle and I'm pissed the Patriots passed him over like 6 times.

But, moving along, I would kill for a future 5th round NT prospect right now. We're basically down to Elam and Holley for NT prospects, right? I think all of our eggs are in the Holley basket.

Lol preach.

The problem is I don't see Holley has a full time NG. So that would leave Elam and even though we likely won't land Elam I just can't imagine the staff striking out at NG so maybe (hopefully) something new pops up.

I've heard this a lot, and I think I'm in the minority, but I disagree. He's already 300+ pounds (303 at the Opening) so it's probably reasonable to expect him to step on campus at 6'4", 315lbs 11 months from now. I'd rather have a guy like that at NT from day one than a guy like Elam, Frazier or Clark that get put on the Louis Nix III diet plan to get into playing shape. I think I'd be happy with a combination of Springman/Jones/Day/Holley rotating at NT for the 2014 season.

I agree we'll probably see something new pop up as another option though.

I would rather land Elam than any recruit because I think he's elite, at a position of need, and a kid from the good ole Commonwealth...but aside from that my question is why are there so few NTs available? We're not the only team running a 3-4 it seems there would have to be more than a handful of available NTs a year but seems like just hear of a few high school kids that are legit NT prospects each season

It is hard to find an elite NT because quick 330 pound 17-18 year olds don't grow on trees.

Of the 111 DT's ranked on 247, only nine are 320+ pounds. Of the nine, we have been involved with three (Elam, Frazier, Clark). Only 31 of 111 report a weight of 300+ pounds.

I think there's a reason only about 15 of 125 FBS programs run a base 3-4 defense.

2011 Bama had 3 starting NFL DL, plus a backup who got drafted as well. And Auburn had Nick Fairley before that, and in 2009 Bama had 6 future NFL DL. Florida in 2008 had 2 future DL, but Meyer's never been big on great defense. 2007 LSU had 6 future NFL DL as well. Among those teams, the NFL Qbs are Tim Tebow, Cam Newton, Greg McElroy, and Matt Flynn i believe. Hardly a stellar collection, but I'll concede that you do need an excellent QB. I just think a great DL is more capable of carrying a team with an average QB than a Great QB carrying a team with an average DL.

Meyer has never been big on great defense!? WTF are you talking about? That statement couldn't be any less true.

You are one tough grader sir. I mean, guys like Sean Salisbury, Todd Marinovich, Pat Haden and John David Booty don't do it for you?

I have no clue. I was being facetious.

Oh haha. I mean there have been a few who have had their fair share of PT in the NFL but none of them every amounted to anything like they did in college.

And I looked up Booty's stats. He has none.

I will estimate 23 spots and 14 are filled. Here is a prediction of my final 9:

1. Luatua
2. Holmes
3. McKenzie
4. Holley
5. S. Thomas
6. A. Williams
7. Watkins
8. Yeargin 3
9. JuJu

Very reasonable IMHO unless Rees craps out.

This is my dream scenario, with Quick being #10

From tj34:

We easily could and would take ten front 7 guys if they were what we believe to be elite or top guys that fit, and we've taken five to date. A few different combinations of DL (various types) and LBs ("Cat" types and/or ILB types) -- if our top guys fall our way, of course -- could yield another, say, five guys for that total of ten.

We wouldn't pass on Morgan, Mouhon, Yeargin, Carter, or even a couple others who may come (or come back) into play later, and we'd still absolutely take an Elam, Holley, S Thomas or Curtis if we're able to land some of them, too. I just don't think this group (front 7) will be decided and done until late in the process, but I do think we'll find our numbers.
