NDfan22 - Let me break something down for you. Dline guys....its always nice to get a 5 star. I would be as happy as the next guy if Carter, Williams, Elam, Thomas, Garrett, committed tomorrow. 5 star guys are typically kids with size and coordination at 17 or 18 years old. DL being some of the biggest guys on the field..at 17 or 18 your body is still growing and learning to function. So getting a guy like the above named is nice bc they can play spot time and most likely start by their Sophmore year.
Kids like Hayes,Trumbetti, Bonnor, Matuska, Rochell, etc are kids that are big kids but havent filled out physically and not quite their with coordination. So they are going to be a year or two behind a guy like carter/etc. BUT by the time those kids are juniors/seniors/5th year they have experienced, just as big/strong/athletic and have been in a program for 3 years. Experience in college football wins games. Prime example...Stanford. They dont have 5 star talent flowing on their dline, yet they have had a top Dline for the last 3 years.
Ideally you want a mix of 5 stars that can play and then guys that are able to develop and give you something with that 5 star bolts after 3 years.
Also, its June. Elite DL dont really commit till the end of the recruiting season. Getting Carter, Garrett, Thomas, to stop by on their own dime in the summer is huge. It shows you they are actually interested in ND, and that leads to an official. Getting kids from hours away on campus twice is huge bc ND sells itself, and the gameday experience is on par with anyone in the country. Summer visits aren't for locking kids up but to show them how ND is different and plant seeds that they can succeed in a culture thats different than all the schools they are looking at.
NDs best Dline class with Tuitt, Lynch, Ishaq didnt fall into place until January. Theres not one reason to worry about recruiting in June.
ND is ahead of the game right now in recruiting and getting kids that have a love for ND is never a bad thing, bc you know for a fact they are going to give everything they from now until they leave ND.
Best thing I got from this post is that ND still has a shot for a visit from Garrett...haha, in all seriousness great post.
