I know Johnny threatened not to get involved every year. And I think Southwest did too!

If I remember correctly there was a couple of years where you purposely were not following or getting involved in it. Or maybe I'm mixing you up with the deer...idk

The only offense I take was confusing me with the deer...... ;)

I have always followed but don't post much in the fourms, I am privileged with some inside stuff, but nothing that doesn't come out from others anyway... So I leave it alone.

It's over my head. Are you saying you're an average man?

No. But I am stoic as hell. Actually a friend that is a poster had a family member that was called a name. So I sprang to action . . .

I think Hayes and Trumbetti are very good players. If you look at their ratings and don't get excited then watch the tape. We are in good positions for S. Thomas, Holley, and Elam. Its only June 26th, the guys you really want aren't deciding right now anyways.

So does anyone honestly feel we will get an elite stud up front on the Dline this year? I personally dont see it happening.

Do you only post negative comments? I just read through the last 20 or so posts of yours and they are all super negative. Every one is about "Tell me why we haven't offered ___", "Am I the only one that thinks we have no shot" and "I don't see this happening".

No wonder your rep bar is solid red. Your posts are the worst.

I should of worded my post differently. What I should of said does any feel that "ND" can get a kid like tuitt, lynch or nix who can play right away for the most part?

Nix didn't play right away, and probably couldn't have. He was really out-of-shape when he reported to campus.

Was the 2011 class your first year following recruiting? Some recruitniks were calling our DL haul that year the best ever. And no surprise, as both Tuitt and Lynch are still projected to go in the first round of next year's draft.

Needless to say, you need to adjust your expectations. DL who can be major contributors as freshman are extremely rare.

Im just saying if you look at the defenses LSU and Bama have had they just continue to reload and rarely have huge question marks about who follows one player or another, as we are with Nix and Tuitt.

to echo this....most of the time dominant high school d lineman get by on being physically bigger than most of their counterparts which when they get to college are just not physically able to handle a beating for 4 quarters...it's even more rare when someone is a freak of nature such as clowney who is strong and fast...arik armstead, mario williams(fsu), eddie goldman etc who were all big time recruits 5*..didn't play or were not difference makers..its one of the toughest positions to translate from hs to college right in line w/ qb, ol

Those programs "reload" by signing elite recruiting classes year after year; they aren't plugging in 5:s: freshman to replace departing 1st round talent.

Who follows Nix is a huge question mark, largely due to the staff's inexplicable failure to recruit a NT in the last three cycles.

But who follows Tuitt isn't a huge question mark. It will likely be Jones or Rochell.

It doesnt need to be 4 quarters. Lynch ha d a great impact just in certain situations. A kid like Carter sticks out.

we haven't had their type of success on the field that they have to be able to land the big timers...we are just new to the game of getting high caliber dline recruits

He was also a liability against the run when he started full time following KLM's injury.

And we do have guys like that. I expect Jaylon Smith will have a significant impact as a situational pass rusher for us this year.

Neither Lynch nor Tuitt stepped right into starting roles. Both contributed as freshmen, just like Sheldon Day did last year. Like Vanderdoes probably would have this year. We're not doing so bad. But the guys who can step in and play on the nose as freshmen are pretty flippin' rare. You get to be 'Bama and LSU by reeling in these kids on an annual basis.
Which is why if we could land even two of Holley, Carter and Elam plus Hayes and Trumbetti, this class would be tremendous.

I didnt say start I just said have a good contribution right away, whether that be in a run or pass situation. I agree Day will be good and has been. Vanderdoes is not relevant in this because he is not there. I guess im just more amazed that other DE's or at least one would not want to follow them through. Hopefully after having a top5 defense again this year it will turn more heads.

Lynch had a great impact for two reasons. I won't argue that he wasn't a great pass rusher as a freshman; he was. But an argument could be made that he also helped keep passing yards down because he ran right around his assignment, and when opposing coaches saw this, they ran counters at him and let him take himself right out of the play! That is why that team had a good defense and was spotty against the run, AND had a bend don't break reputation. Lynch gave up a lot of run yards up and down the field.

Lynch wasn't in game shape that year, and neither was Tuitt.

NDfan22 - Let me break something down for you. Dline guys....its always nice to get a 5 star. I would be as happy as the next guy if Carter, Williams, Elam, Thomas, Garrett, committed tomorrow. 5 star guys are typically kids with size and coordination at 17 or 18 years old. DL being some of the biggest guys on the field..at 17 or 18 your body is still growing and learning to function. So getting a guy like the above named is nice bc they can play spot time and most likely start by their Sophmore year.

Kids like Hayes,Trumbetti, Bonnor, Matuska, Rochell, etc are kids that are big kids but havent filled out physically and not quite their with coordination. So they are going to be a year or two behind a guy like carter/etc. BUT by the time those kids are juniors/seniors/5th year they have experienced, just as big/strong/athletic and have been in a program for 3 years. Experience in college football wins games. Prime example...Stanford. They dont have 5 star talent flowing on their dline, yet they have had a top Dline for the last 3 years.

Ideally you want a mix of 5 stars that can play and then guys that are able to develop and give you something with that 5 star bolts after 3 years.

Also, its June. Elite DL dont really commit till the end of the recruiting season. Getting Carter, Garrett, Thomas, to stop by on their own dime in the summer is huge. It shows you they are actually interested in ND, and that leads to an official. Getting kids from hours away on campus twice is huge bc ND sells itself, and the gameday experience is on par with anyone in the country. Summer visits aren't for locking kids up but to show them how ND is different and plant seeds that they can succeed in a culture thats different than all the schools they are looking at.

NDs best Dline class with Tuitt, Lynch, Ishaq didnt fall into place until January. Theres not one reason to worry about recruiting in June.

ND is ahead of the game right now in recruiting and getting kids that have a love for ND is never a bad thing, bc you know for a fact they are going to give everything they from now until they leave ND.
