Can't stand Griner after today. Talks and talks about "being open" and "being comfortable with who you are" and pontificates on that...

BUT

...she dodges the OLYMPICS to (almost surely) avoid gender testing... Britney, that's not being "comfortable with who you are"... that's being AFRAID of who you might be and what that would do to your career prospects.

Hypocrisy at its highest level.

If she is actually a woman, I wouldn't doubt the use of testosterone. Her body, voice all apear man-like.

As if the world didn't already know....Sheesh.

And I wouldn't mind if they asked that to ALL of the players. Keep that in house, as there doesn't need to be distractions. The media doesn't need to know who you're sleeping with while we're making a run.....Nor do you need to be a spokesperson for gays. Concentrate on school and playing ball right now.

I have no problem with that, actually

You are a walking political fire bomb. It'd be amusing if I didn't have to clean up the aftermath.

Oh come on!

What was wrong with that post? I just don't think a team needs to focus on that kind of thing during the season. There is enough of a circus around the best womans player in the country. Worry about making a statement in the offseason.

and Whiskey, behind every bad poster...there is a good mod. I thank you for your service. LOL

And I didn't say I agreed with it from a recruiting standpoint...I doubt it hurts womens basketball recruiting to have a player admit she's gay. That's dumb

I can't even think of a good analogy for how common lesbian women are in basketball so why anybody would feel they need to hide their sexuality or make someone hide their sexuality is beyond me.

Probably just didn't want the added media attention. Although, is it possible to have "added" media attention if your sport doesn't really have any media attention to begin with to add to?

When you, as a member of the powerful majority (white heterosexual male, etc.),state that a lesbian should stay in the closet because coming out would be "distracting", it comes off as the smug privilege of one who can't empathize with the oppressed. At least that's how a Progressive would take it. I'm sure several of our left-leaning posters will twitch when they read that.

And I didn't mean it as insult, truly. Your ability to inadvertently turn even the most innocent topic into partisan warfare would be hilarious if I didn't have to clean up the mess.

All media is good media, no?

And people respect individuals who come out nowadays. People have seriously been waiting for an NFL or NBA player to come out openly. And now Baylor looks like shitheads because they asked her to not come out in order to cover their own ***. Doesn't sound like a place that's looking out for their student-athletes but rather looking out for themselves.

I agree, doesn't look good on Baylor's part, and they proably should have thought about it more from the perspective of modern social sentiment as opposed to being more shortsighted about it.

Haha, virtually this entire thread makes me cringe. It is the worst thread on IE. But I always check it when it gets bumped. Can't help myself.

Btw, I hate that term "Progressive." Do people still use it to describe themselves in 2013? It reminds me of Glenn Beck and his wacky rants about Woodrow Wilson. I'm certainly left-leaning but I don't believe in "Progress" in any general way. Most left-leaning people read Horkheimer and Adorno in college and are taught that the notion of "Progress" is out of place in any post-WWII lexicon, I'd thought. "Liberal" is a label I'm fine with, but "Progressive" seems anachronistic.

Ha! I feel the same way about the term "liberal". It's misleading in that (1) it means something entirely different in Europe; and (2) it bears very little resemblance to philosophical liberalism.

I have no desire to be grouped with Beck, so what term for the mainstream American political left would you prefer (other than liberal)?

Ha, I guess that's fair enough. I hadn't thought of it like that and don't have a better suggestion. I'll mull it though.

I fully expect a spike in purchases of "Juwanna Man" on DVD. The director of that, if he didnt already do the honorable thing and drink bleach, owes BG a Christmas card.

Looking forward to the day that being gay is not a topic of interest anymore. It's just not my business.
