That's bad@ss... kid is something special. He has the same feel as Teo did when we were recruiting him.

If he was a NSD decision, it would be the biggest recruiting story in the country, imo. The only reason he isn't is because fully committed kids don't have a lot of drama.

We are very lucky to be getting Jaylon.

I think it's so awesome that one of the best players in the country is such a stellar dude and loves ND. I like this quote. "The golden dome isnt going anywhere."

Believe it or not...I liked that he was still grinding it out working at Burger king. Tells me he's disciplined on all levels. Retiring his number also tells us that he was highly thought of by everyone he came in contact with. The biggest thing that he has accomplished is assisting the coaches in keeping this class together. true leader.

Reading all this just give me goosebumps thinking about our future. Kids like this do not come along very often. He is mature beyond his years, and he has the talent to back it up. Absolute program-changing kind of player.

Jaylon is my favorite defensive recruit of all time. He will match Manti in every way.

That's a bold claim, but given Jaylon's personality and dedication, I wouldn't say it's unfounded at all

Agreed. This kid has really impressed me. Manti was instrumental in getting us back to championship level - Jaylon will be instrumental and reaching the peak. Really excited about watching his career at ND

Jaylon will see the field early and often at ND. He is a talent that can't be left off the field.

Everytime I hear something more about this young man I think: this is beyond imagination, yet it's NOT "too good to be true", it IS true. Then I fall back into a minor confusion and think: we MUST get him on the field A LOT, but WHERE?

I would REALLY like to know what the conversations between Jaylon and Diaco have been as to what are the variety of positions that they [mutually] would like to try him out in.

If I had even a slight real-world [not random speculation] clue about that, the full picture of 2013 defense would get much clearer. And, unless there are unusual "shifts" during Spring practice [before he is even "fit in" anywhere], I won't even get that clue until August [unless Kelly tells during a PC.]

This. I wasn't really into recruiting when Manti was coming in. I honestly had no clue about him till like the week before the season. I know, sad. I was really excited when Lynch was coming in, but there was always a worry with me that he would end of somewhere else. And he did. Jaylon is gonna be special for us, hell he already is to me.

From the article linked above.
Jaylon:
"He told me there was still a spot at Michigan for me if anything changed," Smith said. "I appreciated that, but nothing was going to change. The Golden Dome isn't going anywhere."

U of M Coach:
"After the meeting, Mattison came out of the room and just looked at me," Huth recalled, "and he said, 'That kid is the real deal. I have talked with hundreds of players in my career and never had a conversation like that.' "

love the rebuke of Mattison...yet still not happy he sat down with Mattison and his coach down at Leurs this late in the cycle.
would of preferred he declined the sitdown.
would not have been good if this info was public on the during the week of the AA decommit and the kelly to eagles talks...nsd cant come soon enough!

I always heard that Spond will be the starter at the DOG, but after all i think Jaylon will be the starter, because he is something very special. I remember in 2009 when Toryan Smith was the starter in the middle against Nevada and next week Manti was already the starter. Generational talent.

Re: sitting with Mattison: ....jeez ... Jaylon is an extremely polite and confident young man. He was engaging in a civilized behavior with an important person in his future chosen profession, and a man who deserves some respect on his own. Jaylon did the correct mature thing.

.... always something....

OK, calm down. Spond is undoubtedly a better college football player than Jaylon.

Also, Jaylon is playing the CAT position.

Exactly. Mattison's resume is nothing to sneeze at, and if he left the meeting blown away, then you can be sure he'll remember that when Jaylon is going pro, and his NFL connections will hear all about it. Rivalries have a lot of hatred, but also lots of respect.

Good post; great sentiment! Kelly told Jaylon he was looking at Cat for him. This is very interesting and brings up some conversations about ND's defensive plans for 2014, which could throw everything into a cocked hat.

And if you remember, Manti played more and more, but actually came in as outside linebacker in the 4-3 variant. Torian was most directly replaced by Brian Smith, who after lackluster performace after lackluster performance started to find success in the middle. Remember, the fastest forty Torian ever recorded was 5.03 seconds. The kid played his heart out. He had none of the problems that were aluded to with many of the Weis era recruits. He was just too slow.

This is the most important point, about a most important characteristic, and worthy of several notes.

A) there is nobody on this site like OldManMike, (a few close seconds) that can boil things down to the essence and communicate with enough sophistication to get important points across. Imagine a 17 year old sitting down with not just anyone, but a true master of college football like Greg Mattison, and talking to him, toe to to, with the kind of mature presence that Mattison walks out of the room like that. Mattisons own description makes him a one out of one. Next to Jesus lecturing the rabbi's in the Temple, this is the best we gwen see.

B) I just talked to a Michigan fan about Shane Morris. Well actually we were talking in general and he asked how our homosexual linebacker was doing. You guys are right, it is rampant, but that is the way homophobia goes. After I told him, "For the thousandth time I cannot fix you up!" I took and interesting psychological tact and told him he was just going through quarterback envy. I said to him, "You are just upset that you don't have a quarterback!" He said that whatshis name would play for his remaining year. I said, "Poorly!" He said Shane Morris would take over the next year. I stated, "Shane Morris would be a bust". He replied, "You can't tell for sure," very defensively! But I can. It is all about those glimpses of behavior that show strength of character. Jaylon has many, from his handling of his coaching mess to the Manti snafu, to his leadership and delivery on the field. And oh yeah, after Whitmer handed it to them 20-3, Jaylon walked off the field with his head high, and not a complaint in his step. That was all I needed to see. Take a look at Shane Morris after getting ripped up by Saint Iggy, this year!

I am going to call Jaylon: "The Expediter"

Torian was a good dude. I lived 3 doors down from him. Too slow as you note

We just see things differnetly on this Mattison thing but no worries.
to me what happened was essentially an "in home visit"...just at JS school and not at his house.
all this high praise for mattison as a beacon of righteousness and all things right in college football i just dont subscribe to.
hes a stone cold recruiting killer, always has been. has talked sh^t about ND, especially ND, for a looong time.i dont like him asking to visit with Jaylon at is school to begin with and also not fond of Jaylon accepting the meet.
i dont see it as a "career counseling session" that jaylon could learn from like some of you seem to think...Mattison wanted/has wanted Jaylon and was taking a recuriting flyer on Jaylon in a tim eof great tumult within our program...and got rebuffed.

Most times I enjoy reading your posts.....but this is one time I have to wholeheartedly disagree with you in its entirety. Jaylon is more than capable of handling his recruitment with whomever the visiting coach may be. Yes, Mattison is a cut throat recruiter, and yes, he's bad mouthed ND plenty in his career. He's also recruited for ND while coaching here, and I highly doubt you did any complaining of his tactics while being our DC......but Jaylon is an extremely humble and gracious young man, and not the type of kid to decline a meeting from a coach from another school. I'm more proud and excited that he met with Mattison and told him "thanks, but no thanks."

He didn't take a visit to Ann Arbor, so the fact that he met with Mattison means nothing. Can't wait to get this kid on campus. Go Irish!

urban Meyer has said Greg Mattison is the best recruiter he has ever seen. That's saying someone coming from Urban because Greg has helped sign some nasty classes at Florida. IMO there isn't a finer defensive coordinator in the country than Mattison. When it comes to recruiting and X's and O's Mattison is the best.

Because of the position Jaylon will be playing he will have an opportunity to be more impactful than Teo. Manti is one of the most decorated defensive players in college football history and that's a testament to how great he was. However ROLB in the 3-4 is usually the guy that makes the big plays on defense (sacks, TFL, etc.) so jaylon will have every opportunity to make his mark.

I want to see instances of where Greg Mattison has badmouthed Notre Dame. Granted his son went somewhere else because he didn't want to be coached by his dad, but he has two daughters that graduated from Notre Dame. I don't know what it is that he did so bad, but I would like to see it on paper, I think he was one of the better assistants that went through the coaching ranks of the Irish.
