Here's the weird thing about Anzalone as a prospect to me. His coverage abilities are great. Like absolutely fantastic. He has a great frame. And great athleticism. As an athlete, he has all the physical tools you want for a linebacker.

But... his tackling technique is quite suspect and his film from the defensive side of the ball really isn't that great... certainly not 5 level when you compare to other linebackers around that rating in the class. I think he *could* be AMAZING and warrant the 5 rating depending on his player development. The weird thing is he would've gotten that at ND... but I don't think that's a guarantee at Florida. He might just get moved to an H-Back role at Florida and never sniff the defensive side of the ball if he gets on campus and their staff likes the other guys better because they're more polished on that side of things.

I think you are right on with all of this, especially the bolded, but UGH, I'm still not over it.

We always give Kelly credit for recruiting ATHLETES above all and molding them into football players. So don't we have to admit that Anzalone is exactly the sort of guy who would become a star under Kelly? Anzalone was a GREAT athlete and, while he may not be a great football player yet, he would have become one under the tutelage of our staff. He had all the physical/intangible attributes that you need to make the transition from athlete into a great ILB in our system. He would have improved his fundamentals in time. If he doesn't become a great 'backer at UF, well, we'll get to say "I told you so" ... but that's cold comfort. I don't want to be right ... I want this guy flying all over the field for ND.

By the way, that philosophy is why I love Folston. He's another kid who is just a great athlete. I'm excited to see what he does for us.

I get the sense that he is the guy on his Cul de Sac that everybody talks about behind his back. He seems a bit thin skinned for the role he is in...or childish. Do you have to go through the spanking machine to get reinstated...or worse tell Farrell he's brilliant?

Me too. Bryant takes away a lot of the nerves, but I really wish we had recruited another RB late in the cycle, you know, as a contingency plan.
