Toys 'R' Us reduces price of A-Rod figurines from $15.99 to $1.00 - CBSSports.com

By Dayne Perry

That, page viewers, is an A-Rod figurine available in exhange for redeemable U.S. currency at Toys "R" Us action retailers, and that figurine -- cocked arm, resolute countenance, soiled breeches and all -- has been subjected to a punishing 93.7 percent discount. You see, in the business world sometimes demand grabs supply by the lapels and beats him with a claw hammer. That's what appears to be happening in this instance.

As always, when adults misbehave, it's the durable-good profit margins that suffer the most.

Yankees to sign Brian McCann to five-year, $85M deal - CBSSports.com

5 years $85 Million

I know catchers are scarce but $17 Mil/yr strikes me as steep for a .250 hitter.

Yea, it seems a bit much but we needed a solid catcher and George probably would have given him 25 lol. A lefty with some power can have a chunk of productive years in Yankee Stadium. Maybe he floats back around to his career batting avg (.277).

I like him behind the plate though. Nice start to the offseason.

McCann can hit and will be great with right field wall being short. Very good pickup

Loved him as a Brave. But he has a lot of wear on that body. Braves only gave the qualifying offer of $14 mil so they get a compensatory pick. They wanted him back at less money and years because they have a young pup ready to go. Mac will be good for the Yanks, but I will tell you now that he will be sitting out extended games with little nagging injuries. That is a ton of money and years to throw at someone who is already showing so much wear at 29. But I really like him and hope he stays healthy and plays well for NY.

Not to get overly optimistic at this point but we are absolutely stacked next year if a few more things fall right. (Beltran, Arod etc.)

Gardner
Beltran
Cano
Tex
Arod
Soriano
McCann
Jeter
Ichiro/Wells

Sabathia
Nova
Kuroda (reports are that he will re-sign)
Tanaka
Pineda/free agent?

There is a zero percent chance we can sign Beltran, Cano, Tanaka and Kuroda if Arod isn't suspended. The math just doesn't even come close to working.

Disagree. I don't think the 182? number is a hard line. In fact, I know it's not a hard line, Cashman said so in an interview. Plus Arod could be suspended or ~50 games which is basically Kuroda's salary.

The number is 189, and it is about as hard as it gets. They need to be below 189 this year so they don't have to pay the massive tax penalty associated with it, and so the 3 year clock can reset.

Per Joel Sherman of the Post, the Yankees now have 8 players signed next year for a total of $115 million dollars (that is including Arod). You want Cano back? That is going to be at least $28 a year. So that is now $143. Kuroda will be at minimum $12 (believe what he made last year) and Beltran would absolute be over or around $20 a year. Now you are up to at least $175 something, without Tanaka or filling the other holes on the roster (3rd base for the period Arod is suspended, 4th OF, SP, RP).

Even if you take out Arod's salary for just those 50 games, there is still no way in hell that comes close to working. I'm sorry man, but it's just wildly unrealistic.

The only way the Yankees can sign all those guys is if Arod is suspended for the full 2014 year. Even then, I wouldn't be a fan of those moves because you are again loading up on aging players that are going to be contract albatrosses in their late 30's.

If they go more than 2 years for Beltran, 6 for Cano (which is still crazy to me), or any other contract of significant length I will be upset. We need to focus on rebuilding the farm system more than signing guys like Beltran to be extremely heavily paid stop gap measures on a team that has significant pitching issues.

I agree. Definitely no more than 2 years for Beltran and 6 for Cano. Although I'd go 7 if he came down to 25 mil per year. I'd give Tanaka 4 years.

Kuroda is probably getting a pay cut. Was very weak in second half last year. I'd guess 9-10 instead of 12.

Why would Kuroda take 9-10? He declined the qualifying offer which was $14 for one year, no?

And I don't want to be paying Cano until he is 38. I love him, but we can't keep making these deals with guys that stretch until their upper 30's for huge money.

Forgot about that.

The reason I think you are probably right about Beltran though is that since the Yankees already signed McCann, the first round pick we would have to give up for those qualifying offer guys doesn't apply anymore. So basically we would give up less to get Beltran than anyone but the Cards now.

Don't forget we also have Vernon Wells under contract for another year too. He is going to be in an OF spot and probably DH'ing a day a week as well.

Yeah but the Angles are paying a huge chunk of that salary. I figure Ichiro/Wells/Beltran would platoon the outfield and DH positions with Beltran obviously playing every day.

I was just talking about in terms of your lineup prediction, not salary. He was included in my 115 number. We already have two guys in Soriano and Wells that are in the OF who will probably need days off. Adding Beltran, who will need a ton, doesn't help a lot in terms of OF. He will be more of a DH with some OF sprinkled in IMO if we sign him.

The one thing about McCann you yankee fans will ove is he is very clutch. Or at least he was in Atlanta.

And he is going to absolutely love the short porch in RF.

Yes he will. And for being a bigger body catcher he isn't a bad defensive catcher.

Does he throw well to second?

No, but he apparently frames pitches really well and is GREAT in the clubhouse.

He is no molina brother but he can hold his own pretty well.

Can he be an ILB or NT?

Cano and Yanks are still far apart after a "reported" offer of 7 yr 168 million. 24 million a season. SMH
