There are only two plausible outcomes for Syria. Either a foreign power props up Assad and some measure of stability is regained, or Assad falls and Islamists rush in the fill the power vacuum. We've already seen this exact same scenario play out in Iraq and Libya.
There are no "moderate" rebels longing for truth, justice and the American way. It's either stability under a brutal dictator, or chaos under ISIS. Good on Putin for supporting the lesser of those those two evils where our own liberal utopianism compels American presidents to opt for an impossible third option.
