I believe the same word was used concerning the Anschluss of Austria, annexing the Sudtenland, and to justify carving up Poland. Less than a decade later it was employed to secure a buffer zone of Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary, etc.

Seems to be common term used by invaders to justify their actions.

Maybe he means "legitimate" with respect to Russia's national interest, and not in terms of moral or legal legitimacy...


This mess is like a Neo-con wet dream. They can use it to argue for more military action and a "stronger" America on the world stage, and as an opportunity to continue to blame Obama for everything that happens in the world.

I do think there are legitimate concerns about the way Russia is obviously trying to reassert itself as a global power, but I don't know that Syria is the place where you want to step in and challenge them. In the Ukraine? Yeah, I would be a little more hawkish in how I dealt with that situation. Syria is just a mess, for the reasons Whiskey explained, and if Russia wants to take charge of that mess in order to protect their asset (al-Assad), that is probably better than the alternative even though it isn't a perfect solution.

Yes, any gain for Russia is not good for the U.S., but on the other hand containing ISIS without the use of American blood and treasure might not be a bad trade-off in this case. Our biggest problems at this point are our public declarations that al-Assad must go (which we will have to retreat from) and our own domestic politics, which as always are dominated by idiocy.

There are only two plausible outcomes for Syria. Either a foreign power props up Assad and some measure of stability is regained, or Assad falls and Islamists rush in the fill the power vacuum. We've already seen this exact same scenario play out in Iraq and Libya.

There are no "moderate" rebels longing for truth, justice and the American way. It's either stability under a brutal dictator, or chaos under ISIS. Good on Putin for supporting the lesser of those those two evils where our own liberal utopianism compels American presidents to opt for an impossible third option.

Assad is a bad guy, but that's basically inevitable given the evil he has to keep a lid on. It's worth noting that before we decided to "free" Syria with some strategically placed Tomahawk missiles (really "smart power" there, Hillary ), Syria's 1.1 million Christians lived in relative peace. Since then, thousands have been tortured/ crucified, and 700,000 have had to flee the country.

Daniel Larison, Scott McConnell and Philip Giraldi at AmCon are all good. Same goes for Stephen Walt at Foreign Policy and Robert Kaplan at The National Interest.

It can be difficult finding credible foreign policy analysis since much of what passes for it is little more than hawkish idiocy.

Russia is already at odds with Iran over Syria. If DC elites weren't so anti-Russia, there'd be no issue at all with this....

China would donate some cash to Iran's cause, but they aren't giving even one shit about Iran. They'd rather continue to sell to US consumers, and put Muslims in re-education camps. They would happily go in and helped rebuild Iran for some nice loans and contracts though...

I'd be surprised if it's over. Iran gained little with their antics today. At best, they look like a big talker punching air, and at worst they look like a country who's missiles can't hit their targets (which we all know they can due to their hits on SA oil). Doubt they go for high casualty kind of stuff, but I think they're antics will continue.

Plane bound for Ukraine "crashes" shortly after takeoff from Tehran. I have a very hard time believing this was due to mechanical issues, unless mechanical issues means an Iranian missile.
