I was simply stating that if I was Putin I would have stayed out of this Syria mess (for now) and let us do whatever the hell we are doing. Not a whole lot to be gained and a lot to be lost.

"Russian Soldiers Deployed to Secure Warm Water Port" was a frequently recurring headline throughout the 20th century. Putin has legitimate interests in Syria.

Those 30% coal powered Teslas look pretty sweet.

Greenest car ever created if you live in Phoenix and get your juice from the largest, most efficient power plant in America.

I like the analogy but I would tweak it a bit...We are at the bar, one person slaps another. Is it our job to break up the altercation? Potentially ending up with a bottle broken over our head, stabbed, or jumped from behind? No. It's the bouncer's job. America is not the bouncer.

I hate to disagree but...

It was a frequently recurring headline in 2014 when Putin stole Crimea to get warm water ports.

"legitmate" ???

I believe the same word was used concerning the Anschluss of Austria, annexing the Sudtenland, and to justify carving up Poland. Less than a decade later it was employed to secure a buffer zone of Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary, etc.

Seems to be common term used by invaders to justify their actions.

Maybe he means "legitimate" with respect to Russia's national interest, and not in terms of moral or legal legitimacy...

This mess is like a Neo-con wet dream. They can use it to argue for more military action and a "stronger" America on the world stage, and as an opportunity to continue to blame Obama for everything that happens in the world.

I do think there are legitimate concerns about the way Russia is obviously trying to reassert itself as a global power, but I don't know that Syria is the place where you want to step in and challenge them. In the Ukraine? Yeah, I would be a little more hawkish in how I dealt with that situation. Syria is just a mess, for the reasons Whiskey explained, and if Russia wants to take charge of that mess in order to protect their asset (al-Assad), that is probably better than the alternative even though it isn't a perfect solution.

Yes, any gain for Russia is not good for the U.S., but on the other hand containing ISIS without the use of American blood and treasure might not be a bad trade-off in this case. Our biggest problems at this point are our public declarations that al-Assad must go (which we will have to retreat from) and our own domestic politics, which as always are dominated by idiocy.

The President; being in the Philippines. Manila If I remember correctly. He said there is no worry on this 'refuge' fiasco. I just begin to wonder why this isn't being addressed more securely. Assad and Syria are being outed like a dead dog that's got pregnant babies in the womb. Someone smarter than I please explain how If the media is doing the right thing.. (MSNBC, FOX, CNN) why we aren't much more aware of the actuality of Syria..

Syria has been planned for a long time to start WWIII. There are those that profit from war, those that want a one world government and control of economies and political power for their purposes.

Since most people are lazy asses and don't study history, what is occurring in the Middle East is a surprise to them. But not a surprise to many historians that saw this coming miles away.

I just think too many people accept the will to follow.

People like you need to speak up If the laziness is so obvious.

There are only two plausible outcomes for Syria. Either a foreign power props up Assad and some measure of stability is regained, or Assad falls and Islamists rush in the fill the power vacuum. We've already seen this exact same scenario play out in Iraq and Libya.

There are no "moderate" rebels longing for truth, justice and the American way. It's either stability under a brutal dictator, or chaos under ISIS. Good on Putin for supporting the lesser of those those two evils where our own liberal utopianism compels American presidents to opt for an impossible third option.

Assad is a bad guy, but that's basically inevitable given the evil he has to keep a lid on. It's worth noting that before we decided to "free" Syria with some strategically placed Tomahawk missiles (really "smart power" there, Hillary :jerkit:), Syria's 1.1 million Christians lived in relative peace. Since then, thousands have been tortured/ crucified, and 700,000 have had to flee the country.

Hey Whiskey, what sources do you use to stay informed? Would like to be better schooled on the matter myself but do not really know the best places to read up.

Daniel Larison, Scott McConnell and Philip Giraldi at AmCon are all good. Same goes for Stephen Walt at Foreign Policy and Robert Kaplan at The National Interest.

It can be difficult finding credible foreign policy analysis since much of what passes for it is little more than hawkish idiocy.

Russia has so much to gain from this also. I agree with the house divided statement. It's bad karma.

This is more like The Godfather 3, not WW3...

Russia is already at odds with Iran over Syria. If DC elites weren't so anti-Russia, there'd be no issue at all with this....

China would donate some cash to Iran's cause, but they aren't giving even one shit about Iran. They'd rather continue to sell to US consumers, and put Muslims in re-education camps. They would happily go in and helped rebuild Iran for some nice loans and contracts though...

Shouldn't this thread go in the IE Safe Room, "Political Threads" so Rose McGowan, et al. won't get triggered when they read IE tomorrow?

I was curious about that myself. I know there's a place for this type of talk and when It popped up on the front page, I then realized how old the thread is.

Exactly. I think the thread started around the same time as WWIII in 2015. Time flies.

Hahahaaaa. Russia was destabilizing (It was the Balkans or something about air superiority) in the area at the time. (Putin).
IDK, much about anything. I'm just a mouse following the cheese.

Trump rekt a terrorist and then Iran launched some rockets that didn't hurt us to save face and now it's over. This is a huge win for Trump.

I'd be surprised if it's over. Iran gained little with their antics today. At best, they look like a big talker punching air, and at worst they look like a country who's missiles can't hit their targets (which we all know they can due to their hits on SA oil). Doubt they go for high casualty kind of stuff, but I think they're antics will continue.
