Wow thanks for that contribution. Very insightful, well worth the space it takes up.

Not sure what that graph means...?

Also, do you all realize that 'Mericas minus the S and the ' and its a swear word in spanish?

ACamp...did you actually change your avatar?! Wow its been like 689 years of that other one... lol

The Boyz N Da Hood one was only rocked for like six months... :) but I may go back to it soon, I liked it.

anyway the graph shows where the round of 16 hails from... Orange is the round of 16... whole lot of Orange on our side of the map...

We have the advantage in experience. Van Buyten is the only Belgian who has ever played in a knockout game in a major senior national team tournament. We have a coach who is a champion and a bunch of players who played in the round of 16 four years ago, as well as Confederations Cup and Gold Cup experience.

Today's game against Algeria was the first in which Courtois actually played up to his billing.

If Kompany is still out with a groin injury, the Belgian defense will be much less intimidating.

Soccer sucks. It's not ours. Leave it to the Europeans and Brasil. Let's play a World Cup in American football and see how that shit goes lol...would look like the Nazis rolling through Poland circa 1939

There is a World Cup for American football. Japan won the first two (1999 and 2003), but the USA didn't participate. The USA has won the last two (23-20 double OT vs. Japan in 2007) and a blowout vs. Canada in 2011. The next iteration is next summer in Stockholm with the field expanded to 12 teams. Obviously the USA doesn't send pros, but the best teams in the world (Canada, Mexico, Japan) can compete with the team the USA does send (mostly recent college grads who didn't make the league --- Cody Hawkins was the QB in 2011 and Nate Kmic, all-time leading rusher in NCAA history, was the RB).

Well no one else on Earth really plays American Football so we might as well challenge the world at a game of Quidditch.

66 countries play American football and the sport was recently recognized by the International Olympic Committee. More than 30k people attended the European championship earlier this month, which was a thrilling double OT game between Germany and Austria.

I'm trying to imagine a Japanese OL. Sumo would probably prepare one well for the job.

The Japanese OL are all between 6'1 and 6'3 and play very disciplined football, as you'd expect from the Japanese. They run a spread offense and are one of the few countries in the world that consistently develop good QBs due to their baseball background. The Japanese are my favorite team to watch. They are just so well coached and disciplined and know their strengths and weaknesses. They aren't going to run you over but they try to outsmart you, which works against everyone except the USA.

Here's a recap video from the 2011 WC. There are a lot of videos online if you ever want to watch a full game. I'd recommend the Japan vs. Canada game from 2011. Canada scored late in the 4th to win.

This is the first time the USA have gone further than England in a World Cup both have played in.

Ah, its how I've always remembered you by...can't picture the one before...

I'm dumb, I know, but I still don't understand what the heck that graph is. What are the numbers on the left? Does it mean how many countries make it to what stage in the World Cup through out the years?
We're only one country so how can we have a lot of orange?

538sports or whatever Nate Silver's site is called has USA at a 43% chance to win. So essentially 50-50. I'll take those odds!

Argentina will be without Aguero for their round of 16 match. He hasn't done anything special but he is still a sizable loss, nonetheless. Only reason worth mentioning is because we will likely play them in the quarters if we advance.

So games from here on are 'win or go home', correct?

Correct.

Acamp--Not sure how the percentages work but I do know the players get a bonus. For instance, for the group stage elimination, Ghana's players got a $130,000 bonus.

What can they do? Start a FIFA bank? That is crazy. I saw the pics of the $3million motorcade delivering the straight cash payment to Ghana. Now Nigeria won't play until they get paid?

I think the US should be favored, Belgium while talented they haven't looked all that great in the group stage against a weaker teams.

As ridiculous as it is, and I agree its ridiculous, but the fact is, these african governments are the ones to blame. Living in Latin America, I can identify. To get anything done takes ridiculously long and drawn out and just insanity, the players realize the only way to make them move quickly, if at all, is when they have the national spotlight on them.
Could be complete greed on the players side...or it could be bureaucracy nonsense.

Oh I agree. I know some of the African governments are corrupt. What is amazing is the behavior. Ghana over the last two days has been interesting to say the least and now Nigeria. Who ships three mil in cash by charter plane and motorcade halfway around the world the day before the team completely breaks down?

And then they turn in an embarrassing effort, in which they give up two horrible goals and lose to a weaker side.

They shipped it in cash on a plane and somehow that plane wasn't hijacked or attacked as it landed from what we know. That's surprising.

Not that it matters too much but Aguero is set to miss the Switzerland game due to injury.
