That's fair, but there's no evidence that was the case with Crawford unless I'm missing something.

It's likely Hoke stopped the visit like he's done a dozen or more times. It's one thing he's good at.

Don't you get the impression that things are a little more quiet this year? Or is IE just a little slower?

I have no idea what actually happened, and am not blaming anyone. But if some stuff that got out wasn't supposed to (as people have been saying), I would be fine with the coaching staff getting instruction to be more tight-lipped.

As for "their jobs," these guys are bringing us recruiting information, not actual news. They are not ethically compelled to bring us every scrap they get so we can make informed decisions about . . . I don't even know what.

Rule #1 in covering recruiting should be "Do no harm to Notre Dame."

If you're Tom Loy's editor/boss, and he gets his hands on surprise recruiting news, and no one has specifically said "keep this quiet," you're prepared to ream his ass if he doesn't publish it. Their job is to report the "big stuff" and get their page views for news, not protect their school.

Would it be nice if ND had a beat guy pushing their perspective? You bet your ass. But recruiting reporting is weird, and I don't blame Loy for publishing the info he was given. His job is to report on recruiting first... you'd be insane to not publish about a surprise 5-star visitor to the school you cover.

I meant here.

Not really, although Prentice Mckiney and CJ Sanders seem to have come out of no where.

Tillery's happened before 2014 NSD I think, so there wasn't much attention on 2015 yet.

Blake's and Hoge's committment people saw from a mile away.

Ruhland's (spelling) was expected.

No one was surprised for Fertitta.

We knew Guyton visited, but went home to see if the feeling stuck and it apparently did.

The real problem then is that ND hasn't provided the proper motivation for reporters to not leak stuff like this. If suddenly no one on the coaching staff or in the administration would ever talk to Loy again because of this, then Loy needs to weigh the future against the present.

So everyone's clear, Loy is not the only one who reported it days before the visit was supposed to happen. Rivals, as well as 247 did.

But we're just mad at Loy.

If Loy didn't report it, rivals did, and the visit did happen, we'd blame Loy for not being in the 'know'.

That wasn't the point of my post at all. I'm just using the info I have, and just used his name as an example. If Loy being blamed hurts your feelings, take out his name and put in any reporter you wish. The point is that ND needs to make reporters fear crossing them more than reporters fear crossing their editors.

I'm gonna have to bow out of this one soon lol. I think Loy is a journalist first, and unless he's specifically told "this is off the record," he shouldn't have to fear repercussions from the people around the program.

I fully understand where people see it from the other side: he's not delivering world-changing news, so why not keep some things on the down-low for the team/staff's benefit? But the journalist in me can't find a way to be mad that he runs with the info he gets if it's directly from a source.

Loy being blamed doesn't hurt my feelings.

I'm just hoping to bring some awareness to people who obsess over his 'errors'.

IMO, it's clear that Loy and rivals did nothing wrong with the Crawford situation.

We're all very smart, objective ND fans, so try on this scenario:

Loy talks to Crawford, and Crawford and his family say on Monday he's visiting ND. Crawford says he's talked to Rivals too (or plans to) to let them know. Crawford doesn't appear to care if it's reported on, maybe even straight up says it's not supposed to be a secret.

Is Loy supposed to sit on that because there's a chance Hoke finds out and in turn, hurts ND's chance at getting Crawford to visit? Hoke's finding out anyways.

I understand that, but it's a two way street. Loy, sorry REPORTER NO. 1, is a journalist. He has a job and that job is not making sure Notre Dame looks good or gets good recruits. So by that logic, he should run with his info. But similarly, the coaches have a job, and that job is to not give a crap about some two-bit journalist and to win football games and recruit their asses off. So by that logic, any reporter who starts giving out confidential info that affects their job negatively needs to be removed from the information. Don't let him draw water from the well. It's not repercussions. It's the coaches doing their job the same way REPORTER NO. 1 is doing his.

I edited my above post. I don't see how it was confidential information considering Crawford never said that it was supposed to be, and rivals was reporting the visit as well.

Hoke was finding out whether or not Loy reported it, and I think it's too much work and very hard to keep all ND recruiting news within ND with 3 major reporting competing in the same, small market.

I'm done with this for today. Even I don't love Loy enough to defend him all day, but I hope you guys see my point.

Tbh I'm not arguing about what happened in this situation, information regarding the Crawford thing seems to be murky at best and I don't really care because I'll eat my hat if he signs with Michigan (figuratively before someone makes a signature about this). I'm more arguing against Lions point because I think reporters should have an interest in doing no harm to ND if they cover ND. Not necessarily for fear of revenge, but because if they are a liability they should lose info privileges. My argument is more of a theoretical "if this happened" sort of thing, which is why I said you could put any reporters name into my argument.

I hear you. But I don't think this is an environment where it's possible to work in the interest of the school and be good at your job at the same time, every time. With that small bit of hesitation, rivals, scout, ISD, twitter already has it out there.

Well I guess regardless of the "journalistic moral" line I was taking, it's not realistic to expect an ND reporter to sit on something unless given specific instruction. If NDBeatGuy1 doesn't report it, then NDBeatGuy2 is gonna scoop it. If neither of them report it, GeneralReporterGuy will run with it. If anything, in a case like Crawford's, if NDBeatGuy1 and NDBeatGuy2 decide to not run with it, then MichiganBeatGuy1 will... and ND is still screwed.

Long story short: I think big info, using Crawford's situation as an example, is going to get out one way or another. Whether it's Loy, Koon, or Lou Holtz, someone is going to run with the info. I don't think it's fair to ask a reporter to "protect" ND when they're covering the dumbest area of reporting of all time, and solid info like the Crawford thing is hard to come by.

I'm going to chime in and say that this is exactly why I prefer ISD above everyone else for ND recruiting. I'm not one that needs every little detail crammed down my throat the instance it occurred. Instead, I like ISD's approach in that they release important information when 1) it doesn't hurt the recruit 2) it doesn't hurt ND 3) it's legit info and not a rumor. Those three things are rules I personally hold in high regard.

(I realize that's not the world we live in and that it's all about getting there first. But I'm just speaking from personal preference when it pertains to ND recruiting.)

Sooooo . . . Who do we think is likely next?

One of about 15 posters on this site to go on yet another rant about Tom Loy and have Loy be the focal point of every single thread on here.

That is definitely likely next.

I totally agree. But even in "the world we live in" not every short term decision that would generate some hits for a few hours is justified.

As argued above, pissing off an important source (coaches) may be a bad long-term business decision.

I'm probably cancelling my subscription Monday morning if there isn't a commitment or at least a very good reason for him to say something like that, other than trolling for clicks.
