I think 4-8 in year 7 is a fireable offense by itself but I personally view his entire resume post-2012 as a massive failure. He could have gone 8-4 this year and I would want him gone.

Following on from this, Lax brought up earlier that virtually all of our post-2012 woes are directly attributable to Kelly's horribly mismanaged daliance with the NFL, and his incredibly poor choice to hire BvG. So it's not like he's the victim of some bad luck here.

And prior to this year, one of Kelly's strongest selling points was that he offered us a solid floor of 8-wins (Murtaugh has written about this). Even if he'd never bring a title to South Bend, there was serious value in a program builder who could avoid the crushing lows we experienced under Weis.; 3 and 4 win seasons cause a lot of damage to the program. But he doesn't even have that going for him anymore.

Some stuff going around that BK did in fact get on a jet heading to Oregon. I have a friend who flies for United out of Chicago checking in with his peeps.

Bingo. The contrail signature is a dead giveaway. It has to be BK's jet.

Tends to support the argument that ND's margin for error is razor thin.

...or that there are 33 HC's JS should be DMing.

Why would he make an announcement to tell us Kelly is back next year? Did he make such an announcement last year?

Maybe because there's wide open speculation that Kelly won't be back and it's damaging recruiting, etc?
I'm a big Swarbrick fan. But he needs to step out and say something, soonest.

No argument there. But if we can field a good team one year, go 8-5, and trot out the exact same quality another year, and end up 4-8... let's just say that doesn't fill me with confidence that we'll ever see another title again. To have such a wild fluctuation in outcomes given the same basic inputs means we must be doing something very wrong. Whether that's scheduling, fitness/ nutrition, conditioning, recruiting, or some combination of all of them, I don't know.

Or that the rankings aren't that important.

Important or accurate? They're obviously not important, since grading out well in the advanced metrics doesn't get your team to the playoffs. But if you mean they're not accurate, I don't agree. I haven't found a more reliable metric for overall team quality anywhere.

Interesting. To me it just tells me that this should have been another of Kelly's famous 8-5 seasons but "everything went wrong". Happens all the time where teams have a much better record than they "deserve" or a much worse record.

It really doesn't make me think we are any further away from winning a title only that Kelly is an 8 win Coach at ND. The right guy could have us competing for the playoffs by year 2.

The coaches are in touch with recruits. That's all that matters.

Anyone else see this? Got it from an email just now through 247:
"FootballScoop.com reported Wednesday that "Notre Dame would be willing to negotiate an exit from the 6-year extension Kelly signed just last year should the right opportunity arise." His name was connected to the Oregon job, which became open Tuesday night after the school fired fourth-year head coach Mark Helfrich."

Sorry If it was already posted.

Chip should go back to Oregon. He is more popular then anybody in that whole state and he's proven he can win there BIG time and he would never have to worry about his job security and Phil Knight would do anything for the guy. His roster in San Fran is shit but it just seems like he was made for Oregon. He's gonna look back three years from now when he doesn't work in the NFL and realize he could have missed out on the opportunity of a lifetime and a job he SHOULD/will IMO take

Of course they would if he wants to go. This job is a meat grinder because of the culture that now exists. Who in the heck would want it besides some wide eyed young guy who would be in over his head. Is there any scuttlebutt on Charlie Strong from any of you guys who are sort of in the know that run this web site. Would he be at all interested in the DC assistant head coach kind of position. Has anyone reached out to Holtz in a consultant type position- I'm serious about both these issues. Lou doesn't have to be running around with a whistle but why not pick his brain about how to turn this around. Has anyone heard anything. Lou would be better at this than anyone including the AD.

Yes, the assistants are out on the road. That's good. But the assistants at every school we compete with are on the road too, neg recruiting a head coach who a whole bunch of places now are saying may be interviewing for a job that's a step down from the job he has now.

It it's true, that's kinda fucked up (and says a lot about the state of our program). If it's not and the university and Kelly are 100% committed to one another for next season, it would behoove us to make that clear immediately.
