I prefer other candidates but if I have to choose between Les and BK I go Les every time.

I'm not so sure. Yeah, I think there would be an immediate uptick in performance just based on new blood and all the excitement that would go along with that, but I really believe that would be very short-lived and we would be disgruntled fans again in three years.

I really want the next coach at ND to be successful for 7-10 years and I don't believe that is Les.

Do I need to throw this up in the vbook?

That would be pretty interesting.

After seeing what Utah did to Arizona St last night (21 TFLs, 11 sacks), I would be thrilled if we went out and got Whittingham. Defensive production like you dream of.

Aaron Taylor was on Tiki and Tierney and said flat out something along the lines of: The spread is dead in terms of winning championships. Play good defense and run the ball.

I wondered if it was a backhand at BK but I figure I'm just a ND fan reading into his comments... but I will say this, I agree totally with him. I don't see an up tempo spread team winning anything big any time soon...

Wut? Is he watching football right now? That sounds like something someone would say in 2010-12, not today. Alabama/Ohio State/Clemson are all spread offenses.

Doesn't Clemson, OSU and Louisville all run spread. Even Alabama with Hurst back there now?

He probably means the pass more spread of Oregon, Baylor, etc is dead... (which it isn't.)

The run more spreads of OSU and Bama are doing just fine. Question is, is it due more to scheme or personnel?

Les would bring in a rockstar staff, we would play defense and run the ball. Plus Wimbush would be his QB and Les was a hell of a head coach when he had Jamarcus and Mett

I'm pretty non-plussed on Miles, seems like the game has passed him by and the fire is gone. He had great QB production when he had a great OC in Jimbo Fisher; right now his offense is straight up archaic. How would hiring Miles be any different than pursuing, say, Mack Brown?

I've been thinking about it more all morning and if we got Les + Dave Aranda and kept Sanford and Heistand we could bring in some monster recruiting classes on both sides of the ball. We would run the ball a lot more and be better on special teams too.

Honestly could be pretty damn good.

Aranda and keeping Sanford is a dream scenario. I'm all in on Les if that's the plan.

Doesn't matter what scheme or formation you use. Been the cornerstone for winning from peewee to the pros for ages.

Yes but they all run the ball well. I think that is more what they were getting at. Look at Ole Miss as long as the WR can get open they are fine cover them you shut down the offense. And with OU last year when they started running the ball could not stop them.

Clemson doesn't run it that well, they are more like ND than the other Top 5 teams.

I wouldn't *mind* Les Miles. But I think there are far more questions about him than people realize, and so I would rather stick with BK for a year and see what the market is like.

His offenses at LSU have been fullllll of talent, and yet they're the reason that he got the sh*t-can... he just doesn't coach good offense anymore, and he can't develop QB talent. He had a generational talent in Leonard Fournette, and any level of serviceable QB play and playcalling would have resulted in stupid success with Fournette carrying the load, and yet he failed.

Add to that, there's no definitive proof that Miles can recruit nationally in the way that ND needs to recruit. I'm sure he could use his ties and land more Louisiana guys, and there is some evidence that he could do the same in Texas and Florida, but we don't know if he could go into Ohio and battle Urban, or go out west and battle USC/UCLA/UW/SU, or if he could recruit the East Coast at all. I'm also not trying to say he's a bad recruiter. Home-state advantage or not, he's gotta be decent to have help on to as many Louisiana studs as he did over the years. But he doesn't have a hot-bed to rely on at ND like he did at LSU, and that's a big question-mark for me.

Maybe things just got stale on both sides at LSU. And I'm sure we would see an amazing initial jump in recruiting. And perhaps keeping or hiring the right offensive assistants would fix the problems with his out-dated offense.

But that's too many "maybes" to rely on, IMO, when you could ride out the "stability" of BK for anther year, and reassess the market and the team.

Well right now i want Kelly with a new DC.

After that just a few candidates i would like to see get a look:

Paul Chryst- I don't believe he would leave Badger Nation but he has been Good.

Dan Mullen- Again he has done a good job in the SEC. He is never going to win a tile their. He has had good teams Getting away from there and Taking the job at ND that cane help itself recruit. Would be interesting.

Brent Venables- A young DC that can recruit the south and you don't hear much bad against him.

Mike Sanford- I will be the first to tell you that i think he is part of the problem with offense because of the 3 headed monster. Again a young coach kids can relate with, a coach that gets ND, A coach that can recruit and understands ND after being here for 2 years. And from everything i can find a great role model.

I wouldn't mind Chryst, as he brings the run game and the defense. But food for thought:

It could be argued that his success at Wiscy is a mirage, in that they never fall far because they beat who they are supposed to beat, but they also fail to rise up and get the big win.

And it's also not like he stepped into a rebuilding job at Wiscy and is on the cusp of that big, break-out win.

I feel like nd needs a younger head coach. I don't really care who because with the roster we will return, almost anyone could coach us to a 8-9win(playoff hopeful) season. I don't believe it's BK and I don't think it's les miles. Nd is a brand in itself, we don't need the biggest name hire to recruit kids. Just good solid coaching with a s*** load of energy! I want a coach that attacks all d*** game long and wants to stomp on teams. I'm open to any new coach that brings that...

Dan Mullen only.

I wouldn't mind Venables but his future is set with Clemson, Oklahoma or K State if he goes home when/if they skip Snyder Jr. From what I've heard, ND won't hire anyone without HC experience anymore.

Sanford could be a take if he gets a quick, successful gig in the MAC (or equivalent) like Meyer, Doreen, Campbell, Babers or now Fleck... and no obvious Peterson-type jumps him in line.

Les Miles would be terrible, IMO.

I do really like a couple guys at Tier 3 schools... Whittingham and Mullen. Mullen, because he took a nothing program that should finish last every year and consistently does OK. And he runs a good type of offense. Whittingham years after Meyer left got his team to 13-0 and beat a Saban Bama team in a BCS bowl. Then they up jumped to P5 football and after a few transition years he's finished ranked in each of the past two and is ranked again this year despite having a roster full of 2:s: and 3:s: guys.

Beyond them, has to be a hero candidate like John Harbaugh, IMO. And that's going to take a miracle.

Kyle Wittingham has been at Utah since 1994 and has coached in the state of Utah since 1986, he wouldn't come here if we gave him a blank check.

Paul Chryst grew up in Madison, went to school at Madison and now coaches at Wisconsin.

None of those will happen

I have not seen his named mentioned but I think Temple's Matt Rhule should be given serious consideration. However, I really cannot see Kelly being let go any time soon. Best case scenario is that he leaves for another job but I don't see this happening in the near future either.

He almost left Utah like year and a half ago so...

And people said the same thing about Bronco Mendenhall. And now he's at freaking UVA.

Since Kelly's return seems inevitable, maybe a better approach would be to look ahead to next year and try to determine a solid coach who is poised to have a down year and would be maybe willing to move on. Are there any coaches who would fall in that category that could fit at ND?
