Hate is a bad word but I will say intense dislike----southern cal---then a close second to Alabama because I have never met a fan that didn't hate my Irish and impress me as the most obnoxious fan I ever met-they truly describe fan as fanatic. No matter what their walk in life they were way way over the top. And they really believe that there school has had the 2 best coaches of all time. You should see their faces when I tell them Saban isn't the best coach in America.

USC is our biggest rival, but I hate Michigan the most. USC is a longstanding rivalry with mutual respect (this is why I'm ok with marrying a USC alum at the Basilica this fall). The below explains it all.

Respecting a rival is one thing. Marrying them? Get this guy out of here!

She better be smokin', pics or this marriage will be annulled.

For me it's sc by a mile! I was at Disneyland for New Year's eve wearing a ND sweatshirt some guy gives me a 'fight on and F ND'! So for that reason along with many others they get my vote!!!

I have never understood this mentality... I often will see someone with a USC or OSU sweater on at the airport and playfully boo them if I am wearing ND stuff but to randomly go up to a stranger and tell them to F their school, seems trashy

I'm having a hard time choosing between Michigan and Miami. I'm in the same boat as NDCrusader. My hate of Miami was forged in the height of the Catholics vs Convicts era; grade school & high school for me and when my Notre Dame fan identity was taking shape. The Miami rivalry has really fallen off of late, but that old bitterness remains. It still turns my stomach when I see someone wearing 'Cane swag.

As for Michigan, the gut-punch results of ND's recent games against them, the obnoxiousness of their fans, and my recent awareness of the ugly history the Irish have with them has really elevated them to top scumbag rivals.

Being an East Coast guy, Michigan never really registered for me in my early days of fandom. I personally encountered much more jag-off Miami fans in my life than Michigan pukes, versus what all you Midwest guys had to deal with growing up. It's still a tough call for me.

Been a fan since the 70's. Gotta go with Miami from the Catholics vs convicts era. Always hated Michigan. Hated that we always played that game so early every year.

To be honest, I'm surprised ND isn't an option based on how some people talk about their own team.

I'm actually surprised OSU has so many votes. We've only played them 6 times in our history, two of which were before 99% of the board were born. I get disliking them from afar, but it's kinda weird that the team some of you hate the most isn't even a rival.

It's the recruiting battles that BK seems to lose 90% of the time. I think that has really stoked the flames of jealousy into full blown hatred.

It's cuz you've never lived among them, isolated up there in the mitt.

Plus, if recruiting's half the battle, they are the #1 rival in that regard with Ohio being so important for ND's efforts.

I didn't vote for them, but I understand it.

You don't need to play them very much, if at all, to hate a team like that.

Combine their fans, their close proximity (particularly for our Ohio-based members), and the fact that perhaps the most unlikable coach in the country coaches them, and it's a perfect storm of awful.

But I'd rather save my greatest levels of hate for a team that has all of the off-field reasons, AND on-field reasons on a consistent basis.

I get all of that, but it's still bizarre. Totally understand someone hating them, but what does it say about the strength of our actual rivalries if someone dislikes a team we don't even play more than one that battles us, provides us our memories and defines our history?

Because what? Recruiting? Because their creepy uncle is a fan? Those seem like pretty weak rationale for them to be more important than USC, scUM and UM.

You would understand and probably agree with us if you lived in Ohio. OSU fans are the absolute worst! They are worse than Steelers fans as blasphemous as it sounds. They are all bandwagon fans that couldn't name 3 players if you paid them. Most don't even watch the games but then love to brag about the results.

Don't know what Bama fans you come across but most Bama fans are cordial to most everyone they meet. Yes... there are the fanatics in every fan base but you shouldn't let the few outweigh the many. And IMO, you would probably get some pretty funny looks from most CFB fans when you state Saban isn't the best CFB coach in America - if you in fact were referencing CFB coaches.

I'm with train... I was on this wagon YEARS before they started winning again. I've had very few interactions ever with "bama fan" that was anywhere near enjoyable.

There are a couple other fan bases that fit this mold, but only a couple... that group is 'special'.

We have two rivalries in USC and Michigan that are historically and emotionally impactful enough to me that no team without those could surpass. I don't care how idiotic I view their fans as or how much they kick our asses in recruiting. Football is played on the field.

I voted OSU because I grew up surrounded by OSU fans. People complain about Skunkbear fans, and they are awful, but OSU fans are honestly worse. Many scUM fans limit their arrogance to football, but OSU applies it to all aspects of fandom and life. It truly is unbearable.

OSU fans, even those that are not alumni, will claim that every OSU degree is on par with ND. That is all you need to know.

Who cares, there's fanbases all over the country that feel that way about their teams too. That is more impactful to you than The Bush Push, Catholics vs Convicts, etc?

I don't like either of UM or USC, but I have never come across USC fans that are as intolerable as OSU and UM fans. It's hard to hate on USC when it they are thousands of miles away and it isn't in your face day to day.

Yea...it is. Aside from football, there is nothing connecting me to USC. The abuse I took growing up far exceeds one Saturday per year.

If I grew up in Mich, I am sure I would vote for Sparty or Skunkbears. But I didn't.

You are I are in the same boat, I know OSU is a PITA, but I don't hate them.
I have a few OSU friends and we love talking about how much we hate scUM.

Sounds like the most determining factors regarding which team you "hate" depends on where you life and the proximity to one of the schools listed, or you were a fan before the mid 90's.

Everything I've heard and experienced with Nebraska fans falls in that category. This comes from both within my family that went to the game in Husker Nation at the turn of the millennia (I went to the alternating home game and concur), as well as other fans. They're great hosts, as well as respectful traveling fans. Unlike some fan bases (cough cough Michigan cough cough) they'd sooner invite you to their tailgate as an opposing fan rather than try to pick a fight with you.

I've said it numerous times on this very site... Nebraska fans are the best in any sport I've encountered... but my 'select group' comment you quoted was touching on the worst fan bases, not the best...

Saux fans, Bama fans, tOSU fans, Raider fans... those are the ones that come to mind as having far too high a percentage of unhinged in their ranks.

The OU fans I saw at the rematch in 2013 were hella classy
