I can vividly remember my first AC-130 call in...Afghan map...about 3:30 AM EST on launch night...I took a vacation day...
Heavenly experience. I was on cloud 9. One of those unforgettable experiences.
The high rise and estate were super fun, in fact still are as my wife kids and I still play it here and there.... Trying to win the high ground in either of those maps is so fun...
Hey ulukin, (or anyone else for that matter) I just saw these posts and figured you might be the guy to answer a computer game question for a dude who's clueless. I want to be able to play my old Civilization games on my laptop when the kids or maybe even my wife are dominating TV time. The problem is I think my laptop is too "new" to install them. I figured it would be easy to install a 10 or 15 year old game on a newer computer but alas, I can't play any of them. So here's some questions. 1) If I were to buy them from Steam would they work or would they be just like my discs? 2) Is there something I can do to make the discs install properly? Help a brother out if you can.
Basically Win 98 and XP/Win7 don't have the same color schemes or windows file structure, so older games that weren't made in this era really aren't able to be played in general. None of the newer gadgets have older drivers either, so it's not like you can just create a Win 98 partition on a new computer. I agree it sucks. I really do miss the old games.
I've had the same problem installing my old Starcraft, Panzer General and Command & Conquer games from the Win 98 era. I've never gotten any of them to work 100% like they used to, but I have been able to get them to become somewhat playable. After you install, if you right-click on the .exe file, go to Properties > Compatability and toggle some of the settings you might get lucky. They're all pretty discolored and most of the time won't let me save, but they are playable.
If it's really just an installation problem, Steam would definitely correct that since it would install it for you. However, I wouldn't expect buying them through Steam to be helpful in having them display correctly. You should read reviews in the Steam store and see if they worked have worked for people recently... I haven't been able to find any of the older Civ games in the store though? Nothing before Civ IV.

The other option could be creating a Windows Virtual Machine that runs Win95 or XP and installing the game there. I've done it for work, not for games, but that would be a viable alternative...it would just take longer to setup, but you could use it for all your old games. ClausentoTate already answered the question really, but if Steam has a version of a game you want I would go that route (Just make sure to do the research to make sure it does, in fact, run on your machine. Chances are it does if it's been adapted to Steam). I had a similar problem with Fallout 1 and 2, both games from '97 that were designed for Windows 95/98. I knew HOW to make them work with my old discs, but it required some fan made patches, tweaks, and hijinks to get them to work. I saw one day that Steam was offering the games plus Fallout Tactics for $10 and I said "Done." Ran the install, no hassle with tweaks, patches, or fixes to make it work. There's plenty of other older games like Age of Empires 2 that have been updated and run fine on 64 bit machines.
As far as making it work with the discs themselves, it's likely possibly but I can't say unless it's been a game that I've had to tweak myself to make it work. I never played any of the old Civ games sadly, I didn't get into Civ until a few years ago when I got 3-5 in a Humble Bundle. I will say that for some old DOS based games you can run them from DOSBox willout too much of a headache. I still run TIE Fighter from DOSBox on occasion and it works just like it did back in the day...just better cause I don't have to reconfigure Windows memory through memmaker to make it workThe other option could be creating a Windows Virtual Machine that runs Win95 or XP and installing the game there. Good luck!
You guys should check out Gog.com
They primarily sell old games that run on present day OS's. And for cheap.
Unfortunately, not Civ, but a lot of good ones.
This could be a good deal. Reclaim your old games for free if you have the old registration keys:
GOG.com
[EDIT] Disregard, it seems to only be for STALKER games released in the US at this time.

Ok so this looks amazing... but have they said if the game is going to be A third person shooter like the first 2 SWBF games or First Person??? I'm going to be pissed if its not third person...
I believe it will be both.
I read an article about a demo that some media members got to watch. It was described as switching back and forth from first person to third person to make different tasks more efficient, and it sounded like the user would be able to control that.
They used first-person for sniping or something of the sort, and then switched to third person during combat with an AT-AT so they could see more of their surroundings.

Not to sound too hipster, but its a real shame this is going to be made by EA. I loved the original Battlefront games, but I have zero doubt this will be a good-looking but mediocre game riddled with DLC and other pay-to-win BS. They've already announced after the pre-rendered trailer all the features this WONT have:
No singleplayer campaign
No space battles
No galatic conquest mode
Can't control an ATAT
40 player cap
Only 4 planets
I don't even think that's a hipster point of view. I think everyone is beginning to get fed up with having to buy passes and DLC that should already be included with the game, considering the price you're paying. I read a really good article about the situation as it applied to the new Mortal Kombat game, I'll have to see if I can find it.
All I can say is that EA better make sure this shit runs smooth from the start... if they're banking on a game with no campaign and no conquest and only has ~8 maps, their online play better be damn near flawless.
I have little faith in EA, but it has to be reallllllly hard to mess up Star Wars.
I don't mind the absence of space battles, as long as atmospheric piloting is engaging.
No ATAT is a travesty though.
No space battles? Bah... And who the hell thought it was a good idea to not have any campaigns?? The only thing keeping interested is 'Star Wars'
I believe it will be both.
