Haha, that was my impression of the first two Assassin's Creed games. It's just very repetitive. Climbing can be fun, but you're doing it all the fucking time. It's like Zelda Windwaker and all the damn sailing, it gets old after awhile. Some people really enjoy it, kudos to them. I really wanted to get into the games, but after the first several hours it started to feel like a chore to finish.

Played through Firewatch. It's worth playing but not sure it's worth paying $20.00 for. I think if it was a free game on PS Plus that would be the time you should buy it.

My main complaint was that the ending was a big letdown. The overall acting and plot were cool and building up to a potentially great finale that never came.

Haha I finished ACI and am playing through ACII right now. I'm apparently a glutton for repetition at the moment.

ACII used to be my favorite because of how well done the setting was, but upon replay, I think I like ACIV a bit better. In ACI and ACII, even when you try to be clever and act like a true assassin, every assassination mission still turns into a giant scrum... unless you're extremely lucky, that is. You can take all the care in the world to get to the target without being spotted, set everything up well, and right when you're in the air for the air-assassination maneuver, the target "spots" you and the alarm goes off. You get the kill and see the cut scene, but then you come back to the mission to find yourself surrounded by 30 guys that weren't there before. Now you have to either run like a jackass or kill 30 dudes that only attack you one-by-one... all after you did everything you could to set things up for a clean, invisible kill.

In ACIV, you can actually sneak around and make your kills in silent, and it's realistic to act like an assassin and sneak out without a peep once the deed is done. You can use cover and make your kills from around corners or from hay stacks or from bushes with barely a sound. The "whistle" feature is awesome for attracting guards to dispatch, though it's far too reliable. But still, it's nice to be an actual assassin, and that your preparation is rewarded with clean kills and no fuss. It even makes it a bit more fun when things DO go wrong and you actually have to run like hell, too, because it's more realistic. It's ironic, because it's the one character in the series that isn't an assassin... but he's the best at being an actual stealth killer. (Oh, and the ship battles and building a strong fleet are awesome, too.)

Now, if they remade ACII, but made the entire game just discovering and trying to traverse assassin's tombs, like when you have to navigate and climb the interior of the Duomo and make it to the inside of the dome's lantern? That would be awesome. Give me 30 locations that are essentially geography puzzles, whether subterranean or inside of landmarks, maybe even a few "outside" like the Mayan ruins in ACIV, with a little bit of sneaking and killing here and there, and I'd be set.

And while the thread has been bumped:

I picked up a New Nintendo 3DS XL the other day. Trying to figure out what games to grab. I already have "Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright," as well as one of the original "Pokemon" games. I think I'm going to try and get into some of the Zelda games, which I never played. They have a 3D remake of "Ocarina of Time" that I may purchase.

They also just released Super Mario World of SNES fame on their eShop. Gonna grab that tomorrow once I figure out their online store. I saw an article on Polygon about it, and all of the 3DS peeps are mad because the game is only supported on the *new* 3DS, and not the prior generations.

I picked up my New 3DS based almost solely on the faith that the NES/SNES classics would eventually make their way to the console, so I guess I lucked out by ponying up for the newer model.

I mean, if you've never played Ocarina of Time you really should. But immediately after that you need to play Majora's Mask... It is, in my opinion, the best game ever made.

(It's also a Zelda game, but I don't really think of it as one because tonally it's completely different. It's a dark depressing game.)

I have been getting some Cities: Skylines in.

It's fantastic. About a million maps and the mods are real easy. It is everything SimCity was supposed to be but better

I'm about 20-25 hours in and just scratching the surface. I'll talk to you in another year when I've hopefully beaten it/completed as much as possible.

How does the Witcher compare to Skyrim in terms of type of game/gameplay/feel....??

Waiting for The Show to come out, I'll play that to death I'm sure...

Right now most of my free time is playing my electric football while waiting on The Show.

Best game ever made? I dunno about that. I'll admit that I didn't care for it one bit when I first played it, it grew on me a bit over time though. On the other hand, having to reset the damn clock every 3 days, constantly having to do crap like deposit your rupees in the bank before Day 3 so you don't lose them after the time warp...shit like that got annoying. The story is decent, the concept was good, and the dark, depressing feel was a nice departure for the series. I'm not sure I'd put it over Ocarina of Time though, and certainly not in the best game ever category given it was built with the same engine, same game concepts/tools, and many of the same sprites as OoT. Great game, but I'd look for something more ground breaking for best game ever. That's your opinion though, and I certainly have some games that I put on a pedestal regardless of their weaknesses.

If I had to put the Zelda games I've played in any kind of order, and that's pretty hard to do, I'd go something like this:
Ocarina of Time >= Legend of Zelda NES > Link to the Past > Majora's Mask >= Twilight Princess > Zelda II NES > Link's Awakening > Windwaker....fuck that game.

Sadly I haven't played the most recent game on Wii U, and I missed a bunch of the handheld titles in the last decade, so I can't comment on those. It's hard for me to really put those games in an order though (Aside from Windwaker) as I've come to enjoy all of them over time. I have Zelda II far down on the list, but honestly there's a lot of nostalgia for me with that one as it was my first Zelda game, but I acknowledge that it's received it's fair share of criticism over time so I feel like I can't honestly put it higher up.

Who needs a new system when you just need a power cord? I tried to fire up my SNES last week and came to find that my power cord was toast. Made a trip to the flea market, picked up a new 3 in 1 power cord that works with SNES, NES, and Genesis. Total price: $5
I ended up spending 10 hours this weekend trying to get a pink tail to drop in Final Fantasy II....after all these years I still have yet to see one drop legitimately without using a Game Genie. There's a 1/4096 chance the damn thing ever shows up for a given battle in a specific room at the end of the game. Fuck you, 1991 Squaresoft programmers!

Witcher's sword combat is much smoother. The archery is much worse IMO. My character was basically an archer/mage in Skyrim. In the Witcher 3 I only use my crossbow in specific situations where it's necessary. Skyrim probably has the better side quests in terms of fun/story but Witcher 3 has better acting and is more beautiful. I think you would definitely like Witcher 3 if you liked Skyrim.

Nice reference to one of the greatest South Park episodes. Reps.

So Bethesda released the Automatron DLC a few weeks ago for Fallout 4. Next week they're releasing another DLC called Wasteland Workshop:

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/HjASHR7F79Q" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

And...I'm sadly disappointed at this point. Bethesda does good work, this is still a good game, but they're straying from the formula. They've clearly gone a completely different route with Fallout 4. It's a very different game than the rest of the franchise, and it's even going in a different direction than their Elder Scrolls games. There's a distinct movement toward less RPG elements and more "building" functionality. There's less story telling and more "Here's a bunch of repeatable quests so you can keep leveling till the real apocalypse begins." Call me old fashioned, but I prefer my RPGs to have lots of engaging stories and options, not repetition and quests that only give you one option to complete them. Building crap is fun, don't get me wrong, but at some point I get tired of building.

The Automatron DLC was roughly 2-3 hours of questing and a bunch of neat robot building functionality that sadly has little to no replay value. For me replay value in a game is huge. If a game is "one and done" I question if the $ investment was worth it. A game has high replay value if I'm still playing my first play through and I'm already itching to restart a new character and try different quest paths or character builds. When you have infinite levels there's no real need to try new character builds though, even though it would take hundreds of levels to actually max out Fallout 4's perk tree. I beat Fallout 4, clearing pretty much everything, and I did force myself to start a new character to play through the Institute quest line mostly...but there's not many other roads for me to take once I finish that.

Long and short of it I think Bethesda is getting away from what they do well. I also question if they're going to continue in this direction with their Elder Scrolls series and focus on more Radiant quests and building functionality, and less story driven questing with moral options to keep it interesting.

Resident Evil 5 co-op. Great co-op game.

Does anyone have any other co-op campaign games for ps3 or ps4 they'd suggest for passive gamers?

I really enjoyed the Army of Two games from EA, they're PS3. It's great co-op split screen action for two people, and some of the games (Not sure if all of the games had it, and some older servers probably have been shut down by now) allowed you to partner up with someone online if you didn't have a buddy on the couch with you.

Army of Two: 40th Day is probably the best one they did, it was the second game in the franchise. Lots of weapon modding in that one, unique weapon parts to find in missions, hidden cash stuff, etc. I didn't originally like it as much as the first game, but over time I think it was the best one.

Army of Two: Devils Cartel was the last game they did, and it was decent, but it felt a bit rushed and EA let the dev team go a month after release which was lame. They used two new characters for this game, the story and game play was decent, but it lacked the hidden objectives and some of the extras of the first two games. If you can find it for under $20 it's still a great game for co-op and they probably still have the servers going for this one since it was released about 3 years ago...just not sure if people are still playing it.

The first Army of Two game was very well received. It had a good story, the rapport between the two main characters was good and humorous, and there was some replay value. Some people prefer it to the later two games, but it has some limitations:
  • Not being able to sprint really sucks....I mean really, really sucks.
  • CPU partner AI isn't quite as good as in the later games.
  • Some weapons are useless at end game, even after they've been modded, so you're forced to use just a few different guns which can be boring.

Another great co-op, non-split screen, is Payday 2. You play in a group of 4 people. If you get the game I'd get it for PS4 and not PS3 though. While Overkill (The developer) really sucks at getting console updates out, there's a lot more content on the PS4 than on the PS3 and they've all but quite updating the previous console generation of games because the 360 doesn't have the space and Microsoft cockblocked them I guess because of the size of their updates.

Payday 2 is basically all about bank robbing and heisting with friends. It's essentially the movie "Point Break" from the 90s, complete with over 100 possible masks you can customize and tons of weapon modding. You get xp from doing heists, and the xp can be used to put points into several characters trees with different strengths: Mastermind, Enforcer, Technician, Ghost, and Fugitive. There's a ton of replay value with this game because once you reach Level 100 you can go "Infamy" which gives you 1 Infamy level (Adds some passive xp and tree bonuses, as well as netting you some unique masks and junk) but it resets you back to Level 0. I've maxed my character on PS4 at Infamy V Level 100 (Or Level 500), but on PC they've got a lot more content, you can actually get to Infamy 25 (Which would be like Level 2500). It's a fun game either way, I may have discussed it here before. The nice thing is you typically always have at least 2 different ways to complete a heist: going in loud with guns blazing, or using stealth. Heists never go the same way every time either, you get different concentrations of enemies each time, objective locations often change and layouts/doors often change places too.

Finished my first playthrough a couple days ago, and I feel the same way. Did the three-faction ending, maxed affinity with all companions (except Strong and Hancock), farmed the legendary weapon modifiers I wanted, etc. Was enjoyable once through, but I have no desire to play through it again, which is really disappointing for a Bethesda game.

Playing through AC: Brotherhood right now.

I only played the first two back in the day (plus ACIV later), so I'm very excited for this stretch of Brotherhood, Revelations, and ACIII, considering they are new games for me. I've also got "Liberation" and "Rogue" in hand for after that.

Brotherhood has done a good job so far of breaking up some of the monotony by adding additional objectives to some of the viewpoints via the Borgia Towers. It's a neat, quick way to practice stealth/strategy, as you have to assassinate a captain of the guard to unlock the viewpoint and its "influence." I like that I have to decide which is the best route through the restricted area, which means considering the amount of guards I'll have to kill while taking into account their line of site, but I also like that this doesn't take 30 minutes like a regular mission. It's a quicker, watered-down precursor to taking out the enemy holdings in ACIV when you infiltrate the forts and cut off the warning bells.

The Lairs of Romulus aren't nearly as cool as the Assassin's Tombs from ACII, but I did play through one last night that had me legitimately spooked while I played on my couch in a silent house after midnight, so that was cool.

I also like the "rebuild Rome" mini-game, which forces you to manage your finances and keeps you from getting over-powered too early, which is nice for balancing things.

Looking at the map is a bit overwhelming because there are so many points-of-interest available all at once, especially since I'm OCD and like to clear them out icon-by-icon, but that's a good thing, because there is plenty of content. It's all repetitive, but there are so many different types of repetitive things, that it actually keeps it from feeling overly tedious (at least so far).

I've had to scrape the bottom of the barrel to make my 2nd play through interesting. That involves mostly modding on Survival difficulty along with my own challenges/limitations and adding some RPG elements of my own. My character doesn't use Power Armor, she was formerly a secret agent working for the government. She only uses pistols, which gets interesting against Death Claws. I do have a Pipe Pistol with the Kneecapper Legendary Modifier, which helps. I mostly stealth missions, which was tough in the beginning with just pistols and shitty Sneak. I also work alone, no companions other than Dogmeat (Felt bad that I spent so much time gaining affinity with other companions on my first play through).
