What Color is the Dress?

I'm sure if any of you have been on Facebook in the last 24 hours you may have seen this. I was truthfully getting a little tired of seeing it, but I noticed on another football board that what I was seeing was actually different from the majority, which surprised me.

Please don't post any article links or anything, I'd like to see the results on what posters see with their own eyes first.

So, the question is, what color is the dress?

I saw white and gold at first. Then saw this grainy picture next to a more-focused picture and have been unable to see white and gold since haha. If I look at just the top 1/4 of the image, I can kind of still see white/gold, but changes to blue/black as I scroll down.

I thought this whole thing was stupid until I actually looked at the image and my eyes started playing tricks on me.

I've seen nothing but blue and black every time I've seen the picture... and that was a LOT on social media last night.

I voted like I saw it (even though I know its wrong), but since everyone knows what the real color is at this point, i'm interested if the poll illustrates the CNN poll done that showed 78% of people voted on the wrong color.

the image can be back lit, and the color in fact may be a different color other than gold. But as acamp eloquently put, in THAT picture its gold and white.

Hi! me and some other grad students have been discussing this for the last half hour. It's likely due to some kind of colour constancy illusion, where some people are perceiving the context to be something like "lit by blueish daylight" and others are perceiving it to be something like "under yellow department store lights." In the former case, your brain will try and get the objective (if such a thing can be said) colour by subtracting out the blue as a shadow, and in the latter case it will do the same thing for the filigree by subtracting out the yellow as a reflection. This is a common illusion in psych : See here. but it's not seen that often 'in the wild,' even though your brain does this constantly.

Ya'll are screwing up the voting by posting the explanations and science Was kind of hoping we could just get opinions based off just the picture.

*For the record, it is clearly not "true" black. I say black for ease of reference, rather than saying faded black or some strange mix of dark colors.

Its just a color filter from the camera. The dress is actually blue and black but with the filter it appears white and gold.

My brain filters out the blue as shadow (since the photo is badly over-exposed), so it only shows up as white and gold for me. Those of you seeing dark blue/ black have defective eye balls.

My brain filters out the yellowish reflection, so maybe YOU have defective eyeballs.

You can tell that is blue and black, but is that what you actually see?

I can tell that its back lit, and there is some type of white-wash from back lit source. So although I know there is a different color, but in the current picture I actually see gold and white.

Last night I saw white/gold only, despite the fact that I knew the truth, and felt annoyed that everyone seems to think an illusion based on an overexposed photo is so cool. I opened this thread mostly to vent my spleen about how irrationally angry this debate makes me, but when I saw the photo in the OP, it appeared blue/black ... then literally CHANGED BEFORE MY EYES back to the white/gold I'd been seeing last night. I feel like I just had a spiritual experience.

Same, each time I've seen it the picture has been blue/black to me. I can see where a case could be made that the "black" looks somewhat brown, which could be mistaken for gold...but I don't see how people see white there at all, it certainly appears to have color to me.

apparently Ive had an epiphany, because I see blue and black now...lol


but I didnt see the blue/blue until I saw post #19. I then scrolled up to OP and the dress that was gold/white is now blue/black
