Okay, I need to buy some bourbon to make a pie for Christmas. Honestly, I'm old school and my plan was to just buy some Jim Beam. I know that might not cut it for some of the palates around here, so I'd like to get some opinions. I am going to use a shot or two for the pie I make, but what should I get? I do want to enjoy it after the pies are made...

Depends on your preference -- wheated, traditional, or high rye? The following graphic is pretty helpful for finding bottles that are similar to what you already like:

If you like Beam, you'd probably enjoy Knob Creek, Booker's or Baker's. My favorite distillery is Buffalo Trace, particularly those bottles that comes from their wheated mash bill line. But if you're not sure you like wheated bourbon, the bottles that come from their Traditional Mash Bill No. 1 are all very safe choices.

Sierra Nevada Celebration

Henry McKenna Bourbon with a tax stamp while making some chili. This bottle isn't bad but I will be glad to see it go by the end of this year.

I just received a bottle of Labrot & Graham's Woodford Reserve from one of my clients. Has anyone ever heard of it before? Any opinions?

First off, I think of IPA's, Stouts, etc as normal beers. I do drink Bud, Miller or Coors if I am visiting someone and that is what they have in their fridge. While I may not buy that type of beer myself (except PBR when I am going to boil some Brats before grilling them), I will drink whatever is offered me when I visit someone else's house. I went and visited my wife's grandparents in Wisconsin 2 years ago and all her Grandpa drinks is Hamm's Special Light. So I spent 4 days drinking that, but I admit that I did pick up 2 six packs of New Glarus (Moon Man and Spotted Cow) to drink with some of my wife's uncles as well.

It's all about context. When I'm at a friend's house, I drink what they have. When I'm at home, I drink what I like. When I've had too many, I have Miller 64. When I'm at a MLB game, I drink Coors or something. There's a time and a place for every beer (except Sam Adams Cherry Wheat - It tastes like puke).

I do drink bud, coors etc as well but when I'm drinking lawnmower ("normal") beer, I dont post what I'm drinking here.

Last night, had some Petrus Winter Ale. Tonight, I'm having Stone's Vanilla Bean Smoked Porter.

I tried some Dogfish Head Piercing Pils the other day. I don't know why they are releasing it in the winter, because it's definitely a warm weather sipper. It's light and crisp, good for a warm summer day. Not what I'm looking for in the depths of winter (Hello porter or stout).

I have long thought Dog Fish was overrated generally speaking... it's one of the more expensive national brews out there and I've never been in love with anything they've put out... everything I've had of theirs is too damn floral for me.

I look at it this way: as long as the recycling folk don't knock on my door to invite themselves in for a drink ("You obviously have enough to help a buddy out."), I'm OK.

More accurately, "I don't give a shit!"

My liver may be shot, but my conscience is clear ...

It's Christmas time so it's about time I open a bottle or two of wine. Any suggestions?

I do also like ice, bourbon, & ginger ale. I'm the oldest 34 year old you'll meet! Lol!

Moab Brewing Johnny's American Session IPA

A decent session IPA. Starts hoppier than it finishes because of the low alcohol content. More of a sweet malt finish than I prefer, but it's solid when you want to have a few without falling over.
