Cincinnatti area residents, what should I look for?

The two big local breweries are Rhinegeist and Mad Tree. They are both sold all over the place. Rhinegiest Truth is probably the #1 seller here. I really like Cougar and Hugh.

Mad Tree Lift is their #1 seller along with Psycopathy.

Quayside Kolsch from Fair Winds Brewing out of Lorton, VA. A light, easy-drinking beer that was perfect for the post-Thanksgiving gorge fest.

Just had the season's first Great Lakes Christmas Ale. I've said I thought this one was a little overrated in the past, but the one I just had was delicious. Not sure if the beer has changed or my taste has changed.

Whiskeyjack,

I tried a new wheater tonight. Bernheim.... not too pleasing to me. Though it came highly recommended I did not enjoy it. It was very thin compared to many other wheaters I have had. Don't know if you have tried that one or not but I would pass on it. Not worth the price IMO.

For a whiskey finished in wine barrels this is fairly light and underwhelming. Still good. Not great. Overpriced.

I prefer Amador

I've had Bernheim on my list for a while, but only as a curiosity. As you likely already know, a traditional bourbon mash bill is roughly 70% corn, 15% malted barley, and 15% rye. Wheated bourbon swaps out the rye for wheat, which softens the whiskey and allows more barrel flavors (caramel, vanilla, maple, etc.) to come through. Bernheim isn't a wheated bourbon, but a straight wheat whiskey; its mash bill is 100% wheat. From what I've read, this produces a very strange liquor that's so soft it's more akin to a white wine than a proper whiskey. Your experience lines up with what I've come to expect from it. I'd probably buy a pour if I found it in a whiskey bar somewhere, but I don't plan on shelling out for a bottle. Thanks for the warning!

If you're still in the market for Cincy brews, I will add to GK's suggestions and tell you to try some of Rhinegeist's Pure Fury (APA) if you see it. It's my favorite beer not brewed by Three Floyds. It's a seasonal offering, so it's a must-try if you're in the area from Winter-Spring.

There's a brewery across the river in Covington called Braxton that is really nice, and they have a nice selection of beverages. They are always experimenting with things and have plenty of offerings. I don't like their IPA's so much, but they have non-IPA offerings that are excellent. I really like their Storm, which is a Golden Cream Ale. It tastes like a legitimate, good version of a light beer, and I mean that in the best way, as a guy that prefers a good Pale Ale or Brown Ale.

Thanks, though I'm not sure if I'm making it to Cincy now. My buddy wants to go on a weekend road trip and insisted that he wanted to go to Cincinnati, for some reason. Now he's throwing out St Louis or KC. If we do make it though, I'm gonna search out those beers.

I had not heard of it before, and did not know it was a straight whiskey. My buddy told me it "was a wheater" and I had a chance to try it at a bar but never did any digging. Thanks for clarifying. I honestly had not given it much thought after I finished it, but did want to want warn you about it :)

And yes it is as soft as white wine.

Starting a long weekend with a Lagunitas Jobless Recovery Ale (fantastic name btw)... it's good. A lot going on tho so if you like your beers straight forward idk if this is for you. Starts with a lot of brown malts but has a finish like a red... lots of underlying flavors, I like it but I enjoy lots of contrasting flavors with foods and drink.

Sorry that I have been gone for a while. The wife has had some complications with the pregnancy but everything is looking good now.

Recently I have had
Stone Bigger Longer Uncut (too much Islay cask, the peat overwhelms the beer)
Barrel Aged Ten Fidy
GI Bourbon County Stout
Multiple bottles from Modern Times (glad to see them available here).
Founders Imperial Stout 2015 version
Stone Enjoy By 12/25/16

I am sure that I am missing some.

Hope all is well.

Good list, very similar to my own. Thought the peat and DB in the Stone longer uncut didn't mesh well together.

Had Founders Lizard of Koz last night. Wasn't a fan, way too much blueberry.

Crap! I totally forgot it was a Holy Day. That's what happens when I don't hang up the parish calendar for the year.

In booze news, I finally tried Port City's Tidings Ale. It's a Belgian Blonde that drinks like a saison but clocks in at about 7.5 abv. Tasty and refreshing. There's nothing very Christmasy about it, but I don't mind. As much as I enjoy Christmas, I find the holiday beers to be mostly overly sweet, syrupy, instant diabetes type offerings.
