Bell's Hopslam vs Green Flash Palate Wrecker. I have struggled with Hopslam so I think that this is a good way to judge it against another top notch DIPA (though a notch or two below Pliny and Enjoy By).
Green Flash Palate Wrecker DIPA 9.5%
N: Lots of citrus (grapefruit, orange), some pine, some floral notes and a little tropical fruit (just a touch of pineapple and melon. Bitter
P: The citrus, pine and floral notes carry over to the palate along with a bracing amount of bitterness.
F: The finish is long, with the citrus and a hint of tropical fruits. There is also lots of bitter pine and floral notes on the finish. The bitter grapefruit rind and pine linger for a while.
The more you have the more you pick up some other tropical fruit notes such as papaya and guava.
Overall a great DIPA that is very bitter but still very enjoyable.
Bell's Hopslam DIPA 10%
N: Orange, malt (wheat bread?), some floral notes, honey, and a little bitterness comes through.
P: Orange and honey are there along with malt (a fair amount) that is similar to a honey wheat bread that I have had before, along with some orange blossoms. A little grapefruit bitterness comes though with the barest hint of pine (though that may be my bias showing through).
F: The bitterness starts to show up but more in the form of a floral bitterness, with some oranges, orange blossom honey, and a little grapefruit rind. Malt is still there as well to keep it balanced.
Overall I prefer the Palate Wrecker to the Hopslam even without taking into account the price (GF PW breaks down to $2.75 a 12oz bottle while Bell's HS is $3.33 a 12oz bottle). I will add that it probably says something about my taste in IPAs which leans more to the West Coast style of less malt and more hops while Hopslam is more balanced.
