Stone Russian Imperial Stout 2014 release. It has been aging for about a year as it was bottled 3/05/14.

N: A rather restrained nose, with notes of coffee, vanilla, cocoa and some nuts (mostly hazelnuts and walnuts).
P: Bitter (over-roasted) coffee, cocoa and the nuts (still mostly hazelnuts and walnuts but maybe some macadamia as well).
F: Bitter wins the day with the bitter coffee and nuts. A little sweetness slips in from the vanilla and a bitter/sweet combo from the cocoa.

Overall it is good though it does tilt towards the bitter side.

Edit: The farther into the bottle I get the sweeter it becomes with the bitterness fading to the background.

Great to have you back
Great to be back. Been working a lot and helping my wife as much as I can through a rough pregnancy. Drinking Jester King's Mad Meg tonight. It's a provision ale; spicy, hoppy, and citrusy. 9.7%, but hard to tell. If you haven't noticed, I'm on a Jester King kick. My brother's sending me some Zombie Dust, Funky Buddha's Last Snow and some other surprises, though, so I'm excited to try them. I've heard amazing things about Last Snow.

My stomach still can't handle too many IPAs ( been over a solid year now, so I'm assuming its permanent) but I find I can handle Bavarian beers just fine... So...

Thanks. Almost grabbed some, but wasn't sure about it. Is it really malty? I like the more citrusy-piney IPAs over the caramel malty types.

It did have the citrus hoppiness to it, but not as crisp and clean as a regular IPA/DIPA. To me, the malt acted more as a balancing/dulling agent than standing out on its own. I'm not a fan of beers, or anything really, that is "some of this and some of that." If I want malt, I'll drink lager, if I want hops, give me an IPA. It's a good food beer that won't overshadow what you're eating.

I had a going away party last night. I knew that if I let each of the 20+ attendees buy my drinks/shots like they wanted too, I'd die from alcohol poisoning. So I developed a strategy; no shots, and I only drank Miller High Life. My problem is that I down my drinks fast, and get lit up quickly. But by drinking absolutely terrible beer, I avoided that problem. I had 4 beers over the course of 4 hours. I've never struggled so hard to get through a bottle of beer. At the end, I was the most sober person in the room. But I had a great time, so it was worth the effort.

How is this beer? Saw this at the store and almost picked some up but didnt.

One of my faves. Probably the best Old Ale that's widely available in the US. Full-bodied, very sweet and complex malt profile (metallic caramel, raisins, etc.), packs a punch but hides the alcohol well. Highly recommended.

Shorts Brew- Woodmaster, brown ale with roasted pecans and maple syrup. Nice flavor. About to break open New Holland Brewing Knickerbocker Barrel Gin. A gin conditioned in spent spirit barrels.
Edit: different taste with the gin. Starts out gin like, with a whiskey type finish. Still deciding if desirable taste yet.
Now moved on to a Right Brain Brewing Smooth Operator , cream ale. Not much flavor to it. Kinda an American lager type with a little sourness.
