Republican mini-wave.

Feels good man.

So now what? Repeal Obamacare. Ain't gonna happen. Repeal climate change? Blow up Isis? Blow up Ebola? Build an even bigger fence on the Mexican border?

About the only thing I can see the GOP doing is sucking up to corporate America and sposoring even more crony capatalist bs than they already do. Yeah team.

I heard earlier that this is the lowest percentage of voter turnout ever. Anyone else heard the same? I've been at work all day and just trying to catch up on things.

Now I remember why I stopped reading political threads on the internet. News flash... Democrats are bought and paid for the same as Republicans. Wake up.

Can't believe Virginia senate race still too close to call. Swear to God if we elect a career politician/lobbyist over Mark Warner I'm going to be so sad. Don't even know how this happened... polling showed Warner up no less than 9 points at all times.

All this Team Red vs Team Blue s**t is ridiculous. Even if you were born on the day George W. Bush was elected you should have enough experience with politics to realize that the difference between Red and Blue is a difference without a distinction. Honestly how is Obama that much different than Bush? How were Romney's positions that different than Obama's? It is all a giant circle jerk and the only thing that changes is things get worse.

None of this is to say that I don't have ideas or philosophies of governance I care about and agree with but I know a rigged game when I see one.

In many ways, the two sides are so close as to be indistinguishable. A lot of this is a matter of practicality. A political candidate can say anything he wants about (say) defense spending on the campaign trail, but the view looks a lot different from the oval office. When the generals unroll a map and say what national security priorities do you want us to abandon, what capabilities do you want us to stop pursuing, what bases do you want us to close...most politicians will drop their ideological stance and make decisions based on prudence.

That being said, you're kidding yourself if you don't think politics (and I'm talking about the team red v. team blue type) make a difference in people's lives. My gay buddy in the Army was only able to openly acknowledge his husband after the Obama administration ended DADT (and, despite predictions to the contrary, the Army has still gone rolling along.) People with pre-existing health conditions are able to purchase insurance today because of Obamacare. I'm sure people who lean the other way can think of things that are important to them that Repubs made happen.

Your gay buddy didn't get to come out because a Democrat was in the office, your buddy got to come out because the spirit of the times is increasingly liberal and permissive. Obama doesn't give a single f**k about gays but it was politically popular, or so he thought anyway, to repeal DADT. If the spirit of the times was conservative Obama would have left DADT alone. Alas Clinton, a Democrat, signed DADT into law.

Also people with pre-existing conditions may be able to purchase health insurance now, but again that was a move that was considered very popular. But I don't think it's good policy and now those with pre-existing conditions can buy health insurance at the cost of increased premiums and greater financial strain on the rest of the population. But it doesn't really matter because health care reform was coming one way or the other.

History is cyclical and what we're seeing today has happened time and again before. We're thoroughly in the decline phase of history marked by decadence, social decay, and apathy with the overriding spiritual and philosophical worldview of the times being one of hedonism. People want to blame the decline on politicians and our leaders but they come from our population and our voted in by us over and over again. In a democracy our leadership is a reflection of us as a population. We're always looking for the savior, the one guy who will turn it all around and make us great again but western civilization is fighting the march of time.

Yes please on the bolded...

If you think folks on both sides aren't bought and paid for, you're blind, and you like being blind...

Even for a GD independent like me, your tears are sweet and savory.

But please Washington, let's see some common sense work on health care reform and the environment.

Oregon, Alaska and DC all came to their sense and ended the ridiculously stupid Marijuana prohibition.
Who would've thought that California would be the last state on the west coast to legalize weed? Haha

California will likely pass in 2016, hopefully another state or two join them. I'd like to see a state in New England legalize, like a New Hampire, Vermont, or Maine.

Apparently there are five states having ballot initiatives in 2016. Arizona. California, Maine, Massachusetts, and Nevada. There could be more eventually.

Nine states and DC with legal marijuana this time two years from now? Yes please.

I could totally see Vermont doing this. Progressive state that needs tax relief.

I don't partake all that much, but the tax and crime implications alone make this a no-brainer. It still baffles me that people can support legalized booze and not be OK with weed.

I am surprised it has taken this long for states do this. I wonder though which state crosses the line?

I just don't get why so many of you like weeds so much. You are welcome to come to my house and spend all day pulling them if you want!

Huge difference between obamacare and romneycare. Lol

Yes there was! Romney had an opposition that was willing to work with his plan. Romney had an opposition that didn't try to hold his plan hostage refusing to pass the next years budget. And Romney had a bi-partisan group put the proposal together.

It makes your statement true, how huge these differences; but the irony is how the actual plan that Romney proposed and enacted, is exactly the plan that Obama used!

And this was one of two reasons that Romney wasn't going to get elected in 2012. The other was it was more expedient for the powers that be, to have a President from the other party in the event that business officials and former government officials need to be pardoned from a wide range of financial crimes, to crimes against humanity, to violations of the Constitution!

And the beat goes on . . .

Not nearly as good as the Salty tears...

I'm usually a "move forward with dignity and grace" kind of cat, however the conduct of Libbies around me over the last several years dictates that I crack a beer and watch the bridge jumping for a moment...actually its more like watching a ship go down and people inexplicably clinging to the anchor...but more fun.

I remember the, "good guys won, now sit down and take it idiots" comments on this very board... But I'm not celebratory, An effective, legit Republican Party died a while back imo and the petulant leaders on the other side ain't going away... Nothing much will change... Ill just sit back and watch n hope for the best while expecting the worst.

oh...no doubt the Rs will fvck this up...no question about it.

All of DC can do nothing but cater to special interests, and will do so until the country implodes, and/or the Military takes over and resets everything. If it is inevitable, I hope it happens sooner than later so we can fix it and hand our kids something decent, because what we have now is a criminal enterprise.

Thanks I just had my coffee. What I am pointing out is that the GOP is going to do pretty much nothing when it comes to making good policy decisions. I have the utmost confidence that the main thing this election cycle will result in is delaying appointments to the judiciary and or cabinet positions and that's about it.

Also in terms of the "news" this whole idea of a mandate we hear every election cycle in the media is ridiculous when voter turnout is taken into account. Its comparable to teams beating each other but one side doesn't show up to game.

At this day and age it is crazy to me at the amount of people that don't/wont vote.
