Just going to leave this here…
Don't you love that he painted ND as the team "running" from the rivalry in the opening, before proceeding to spend the next 6+ paragraphs whining and crying about the strength of the USC schedule and why it was impossible for them to remain competitive if they continued to play Notre Dame per tradition? It's one thing when a writer authors a "hack" article. That was pure crybaby bullshit, deflecting from a team wanting to compete because their schedule is already sufficient to make the playoffs without playing their rival.
While USC might be the only Big 10 team to play an OOC game past October, the precedence is alive and well in other P4 rivalries...
Georgia (SEC) plays Georgia Tech (ACC) late in the year alll the time. Florida (SEC) plays Florida State (ACC) late in the season. Oklahoma (SEC) and Oklahoma State (Big 12) play Bedlam on rivalry weekend. Pittsburgh (ACC) and West Virginia (Big 12) play the Backyard Brawl at various points on the schedule. The fact that most of those games feature in state travel is irrelevant. The cross country travel component of ND vs USC is a feature of their rivalry, not a bug. It's a significant part of story and tradition. Both teams have to do it, and until recently, neither team complained about it.
Make no mistake, this is about one thing. Both Jenn Cohen and the sycophants covering for her are trying to make it easier for USC to make the playoffs. They know that the easiest way to facilitate that is to nerf USC's schedule because the Big 10 slate is already strong enough and USC is floundering in national relevance, partially as a result of joining. It was USC that said "change the game to X dates in perpetuity, or we're walking away." ND called the Trojan bluff, not the other way around. USC bet on the fact that Notre Dame's independence was too reliant on the USC game. Notre Dame filled the gap with a quality opponent before the negotiation even fell apart.
ND is 11-4 in the series over the last 15 years under the combination of Brian Kelly and Marcus Freeman. USC isn't walking away because they're the only Big 10 team playing a quality OOC game late in the season. They're walking away because they've been getting their asses kicked in the series and if you can't beat your rival, it's easier to run from them based on a technicality.
