I've got a conference in Vegas in April. Any suggestions on places to eat on the Strip that won't bust my per diem (which is just south of $50)?
The conference provides breakfast and lunch, so I can go all out for dinner but I don't really want to pay above it.

Hell's Kitchen Caesar's Palace. I've been dying to try Gordon Ramsay's beef Wellington for years so I'd go with the $69 prix fixe menu. Choice of scallops or caesar salad for appetizer, beef Wellington entree, toffee pudding for desert.

Harrahs buffet is pretty good and not crazy expensive.

For sheer beauty, try a Hotel in Interlaken, Switzerland named Park-Lauterbrunnen, windows of which face directly towards the Jungfrau --- and be sure to take the "World's highest railway" up to the peak.

The most beautiful place I have ever been.

I'm heading to sunny Rancho Mirage California for work the first week of May - Staying at the Ritz. Any of you Southern Cali dudes have suggestions on what to get into? Will be my first time in Southern California.

Also heading to Vegas on a "baby moon" in April.

Never been. Will be there ~4 days. No idea what to see. Wife obviously can't drink. Love pawn stars, think magic shows are sweet, and love gambling at a poor man's level.

Did you mention this before? First of all, congrats. Second of all, I've only recently heard of this term. Has it been a thing?

No I don't think so. It's been a busy ~6 months for me. Married in October, sold our house last Wednesday (in less than 24 hours... must be the craftsmanship ;)), and looking now for our next one on a daily basis.

Baby Koon due July.

No idea - it sounds stupid but it makes sense - one last get away while you don't have a child. I like trendy phrases that annoy the blue hairs so I yolo'd it and called it "baby moon".

Well... in May it could literally be 105 plus out there, hell, hotter than that even. Also, RM/ Palm Springs is not what most people think of when they think "so cal"... it's in the middle of the same desert that Death Valley sits in. That area is well known for it's resorts, spas, golf courses and such though if you like any of that,.. lots of nice restaurants but it's really just a giant retiree/resort community in the middle of freakin nowhere.

Did you end up doing a honeymoon? If not, the idea of a baby moon is pretty comical.

Yes. 4 days in Florida for Universal Studios/Island of Adventure starting the day after the ceremony. We're also going to Mexico in a month which we're treating as a 2nd half of our honeymoon.

Yikes - thanks for the insight. I probably just stay in the pool if it is that hot.

Yeah, there's a couple of casinos not far from there if you are into that, nice ones... but once the heat hits a lot of stuff actually closes down out there, hopefully it's not too hot and the golf and spas and nice eateries are still going. You are a long ways from anything else out there though. Disneyland, the beaches, LA and San Diego might as well be in a different state all together.

VEGAS, BABY, VEGAS!!! I'm also heading out to sin city in March. Will be my fourth time there and I can not wait. It is probably my favorite vacation spot.

As far as restaurants go, I really like Guy Fierri's restaurant by the Flamingo. Great bar food, with my favorite being the trash can nachos.

Have fun Koon, and congrats on the baby!

NYC for St Pat's. Hoping to hit up St. Patrick's and see Cardinal Dolan.

A visit to the cathedral is an admirable and worthy goal.

I've been there many times and it never fails to be awe-inspiring!

I just got back from Costa Rica a few weeks ago. My girlfriend was born and raised there, so we try to go at least once or twice a year. Luckily, it's only 2 flights from where we live and tickets aren't all that expensive. Plus, we stay with her family so it gets even more affordable for us.

I highly recommend Costa Rica if you've never been. It's beautiful.

My contributions re Vegas (actually working on a travel blog post about this, but not finished yet):
Bobby Flay's Mesa Grill was an unexpected surprise. Absolutely fantastic lamb chop with spicy carrots...service etc. skip the fancy cocktails, not worth the $. But the 48$ lambchop (2) was enough for us to split...with leftovers. Seriously ruined me for others.
Make an early Rez, like 6pm, so you can catch the 8pm show of Absinthe, if you can handle Funny, raunchy, raw...make Andrew Dice Clay look like a nun. But I was literally crying laughing. Plus some good acrobatics. Not Cirque level, but...

Neon museum. Get the dusk tour time slot...light enough to see the ones not lit, e working ones come on during...pretty cool.
Fremont St for the spectacle, and sense of "old Vegas", which is otherwise mostly gone. Except for Circus Circus, which is pretty shabby...but offers free circus performances on the hour.

Downtown container park for the novelty. Just a couple blocks from main Fremont St Experience. There's a really good fancy pizza place a block N of Fremont. Arugula, prosciutto, quail's egg... that kind of thing. Pizza Rock.

Pawn Stars was jammed on a Sat. They have a restaurant next door, Rick's Rolling Smoke. Can't really rec, but if you need a beer at that moment, it's the only game around.

Mob Museum is interesting, but mostly reading. They need more artifacts.

HashHouse at Rio (there's also one at LINQ, but haven't tried that one) for breakfast. Get the sage fried chicken....1 order for you both (and the baby) is more than enough.

If you dig art, many of the Casinos now have multimillion dollar collections...rec Aria/Cosmopolitan. No gambling there, just spa. Also Seven Magic Mountains about 20 miles S. must be tours...we had our car. Also a nice museum on UNLV campus, plus university gallery. Pretty campus.
Great low $ restaurant, Restaurante Guatemalte in a strip mall on Maryland Pkwy across from campus. Good authentic Guatemalan, Salvadoran, Mexican eats for off strip prices.

LOVE is also a good show if you dig the Beatles.

Weed is legal of course, so if you're inclined, there's a shop on LVB by the Stratosphere. VERY friendly, knowledgeable staff...leaf, candies, cookies, topical oils for pain relief. Consume all before heading to airport.

LINQ has nice rooms, isn't ragged out. Nice pool area. Rio is off strip so cheaper, but a bit ragged out. Bally's freshly reno'd.

Should be able to snag weekday rooms for as low as $17...but they all now add resort fees around 20-30/day.
Hope this helps.

LINQ used to be Imperial Palace and that was always my spot... right in the middle of the heart of the strip but not nearly as pricey as the surrounding hotels and casinos... I believe it's still pretty much that way today even though it's been re-branded and such.

I suggest the Burger Bar over in the Mandalay Bay concourse, it's pricey for a burger (20-30 bucks for just a burger, no sides although you can add them for extra if memory serves),... but you order off a menu built like:

Standard price (for the most part, I think SOME options have slight up charges):

First pick your bun (list of bun types and it's everything within reason you can think of). Next pick your burger (list about two pages long of every type of patty you can figure from Kobe Beef to standard ground and everything in between, I roll with bison). Next is a ridiculous list of toppings, everything from peanut butter and jelly to all the standards.

I've been there a few times and it was very good every time.

Last weekend I stayed at the MGM and their brunch buffet was very good. Really good corned beef hash and very good chilaquiles, they also had tri tip and brisket and prime rib.. all pretty good I was super impressed.

The Rio Buffet is the well known one, all you can eat seafood and it's supposedly award winning.. I was supposed to hit that up last Saturday night but my wife kind of screwed the pooch on it and we ended up spending 120 bucks on a buffet we never even made it to.

Shouldn't this be in the wives/gf thread? ;p
