I will always be a Tommy fan, and I honestly think he would be a pretty good HC (as long as he nails the DC hire).

I hope he waits for the right opportunity, like he almost got at UNC, instead of trying a smaller school. Going to be much harder for up-and-coming coaches to prove themselves at most G5 schools the way things are.

Is he just not doing well in the NFL? I feel gaslit regarding Tommy because everyone on the beat was saying "Oh, he's so well respected by coaches, and is so into NFL schemes. He's going to go be an OC in the NFL and won't ever come back to college." Then he leaves college and doesn't get an OC job, is in the NFL for one year as a TE coach, and is now trying to come back to college? I guess being a college head coach is something he wants now?

Clearly he was respected enough to get hired by BK and Saban, but I really don't understand his career trajectory at all.

Overall I liked Tommy as an OC.

But I put a bunch of the blame on him for the 2022 QB fiasco. Yes, I know MF is the head coach, but Rees steered him the wrong direction.

Most ambitious football coaches would rather be a head coach in the ACC than a position coach for the Cleveland Browns.

What he was able to do with the offense in ‘22, with Pyne at QB and everyone in the world knowing that Mayer was the focal point of the pass game, is enough evidence for me to know that, at the very least, he is an elite play caller.

With his connections in the NFL, the constant hinting of the ND beat, and one (1) positive quote from Sean McVay, it was easy to take all evidence and assume he was gonna get a shot in the NFL.

I guess that might be gaslighting? lol

I think it is surprising he'd be willing to come back to college so soon after just getting to the NFL, but I imagine even as a first time HC he probably would have made a lot more money at North Carolina than he would as a TE coach for the Browns for another season. On top of that, North Carolina is a pretty decent job at the college level. The ACC isn't particularly strong after Clemson and the occasional Miami/FSU (Or GT I guess this season). North Carolina has put together some very good offenses in recent years, they're just lacking defensive structure. I'm not sure Belichick was the right move for them, I think they needed a younger player coach with an experienced DC to turn that program around.

Plus the Browns are the Browns. Next season they'll probably roll Watson back out there, despite the fact that Winston has looked better and Flaco was probably more effective last season too. Watson can't get the TEs the ball, Njoku hasn't been effective as a result. Bad look for a TE coach.

Haven’t heard a peep since his Rose Bowl crash out, but I also don’t follow the Cleveland Browns Tight End situation very closely.

We are still very much in wait and see mode.

Belichick is reportedly making 10MM a year so even if Tommy isn’t making close to that the upgrade in pay likely would have exceeded his current NFL pay by leaps and bounds.

CJ Carr and Kenny Minchey committed to Rees fwiw.

Buchner was a top 100 recruit and top 10 QB, and committed to Rees. Just didn’t pan out

Jurkovec was the #4 QB in his class, committed to Rees.

Can’t say he didn’t get top ranked QBs, because he did. Here’s to hoping Carr is the real deal

That said, the dude developed Ian Book into an NFL draft pick and went 8-2 in games started by Drew Pyne. He has some skills as a coach.

Agreed. I thought he did a great job coaching guys up. Not sure what the root reason was, but his evaluations were largely shit before Freeman took over as HC.

Good coach. Professional people know that. Not our coach anymore. Wish him the best. Bailed us out playing QB when we had no one else.

I salute him for that. Can't imagine what those years would have been with some of the options (ex. Nate Montana.) Have a good career, Tommy.
