I don't think he's perfect, but then again I don't think any OCs are perfect. But I do think he gets an inordinate amount of heat considering how much he improved the offense after Long left and how he's holding things together with duct tape this year.

As a coach, his biggest area for improvement is going to be as a recruiter + QB coach. We cannot keep signing physically limited players at QB... we are in a situation where if Buchner doesn't pan out or gets hurt then we are totally cooked.

Nah, we will just take Graham Mertz from the portal.

There's also some fair criticism that the TD% in the Red Zone needs to go up, that was something Chip Long did very well in '17 and '18. Can't recall how '19 looked numbers wise. I'm very excited to see how Rees calls the offense next year

our run game was pretty phenomenal in those years right?

He doesn't deserve the criticism, expect for maybe a head scratching play or two during a game. Tommy has improved and will continue to improve. He's built that way.

I do think this is critical and it manifests itself in the recent success that Alabama, Clemson and OU have had prior to Covid. This past Sunday Jalen Hurts, Tua and Mac Jones all quarterbacked NFL teams to victory, for example. While I can't expect this kind of talent production from ND, they need to be able to get the one guy who can tie this all today and bring home a National Championship. ND under Kelly has lacked that more than anything else when you consider the state of the program up until now.

Rees has to be the one to close the deal on ND's next dude, and they haven't really had a guy close to being that under Kelly. A QB like Brady Quinn or Jimmy Clausen in this program present day under Brian Kelly would put them way closer to a championship. They just need that guy.

I hope it is Buchner but I am terribly skeptical at this point.

Skeptical of Buchner specifically, or just skeptical generally that they can coach up a QB to that level?

Both.

Buchner is a true freshman and not many are getting PT right now other than Caleb Williams. I think this has to fall into place with this roster, the incoming class and this staff otherwise they might miss out on a shot at a National Championship in this format. I think playoff expansion is bad for ND. Winning more games just gives an already challenged program even less margin for error.

Buchner is smart and talented, as evidenced by his offer list, but I'd honestly feel better about him as a prospect if he were at several other programs. I suppose everyone who has ever transferred hasn't really done much of anything outside of ND, including Jurkovec, but were they already damaged goods? Seems like Kelly got every great ounce of football from Rees and Book, but we saw the supposedly uber talented guys like Golson, Kizer, Wimbush totally fizzle. There have been injuries (Zaire) and oddities (Kiel) in addition. The guys who have been in this program just haven't seen to click if expected to, and the fringe guys have performed above their ability.

I think we're really going to see the offense do well in the coming years. If the OL is solid next year we've got a lot of talent with Buckner, Diggs, Tyree, Styles, Colzie, and Mayer to work with. That would be the most complete starting group of skill players Rees has had a chance to work with, provided they all continue to improve and meet expectations. A lot of that will certainly fall on Buckner and the OL.

I see her on the sideline during games all the time talking to players and always wonder who she is. Players seem to react to her pretty well.

Thought this was cool. Lot of support for keeping Freeman and Rees by current and former players last night in the Twitter Space. Book mentioned that Tommy was the best coach he ever had, and here's the guy Book replaced giving his support:

If the rumors are true and he is remaining OC, Tommy Rees is an absolute gangster. I take back any disparaging remarks I have ever made. Loyalty is loyalty.

Fingers crossed on Elston and Taylor now.

It's been awhile since I've delved into any scripture.

The Book of Irish, Chapter 115

Then Reesus was led up by the Spirit into the Tiger Stadium pressbox to be tempted by the devil Brian. [SUP]2 [/SUP]And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, afterward he needed a beer. [SUP]3 [/SUP]Now when the tempter Brian came to him he said, “If you are to be the Offensive Coordinator here, command that the LSU players execute the bubble screen.”

[SUP]4 [/SUP]But Reesus answered and said, “It is written, ‘Real men shall coach the Irish alone, and by every word that proceeds from the mouth of the Freeman.’ ”

[SUP]5 [/SUP]Then the devil took Reesus up into the holy city, South Bend, and set him on the pinnacle of the Hesburgh Library, [SUP]6 [/SUP]and said to him, “If you are the Offensive Coordinator, throw yourself down from here into the pool. For it is written:

‘He shall dive into the water and be unharmed,’

and,

‘On their shoulders shall they shall bear you up,
Lest you dash your foot against the mural.’ ”

[SUP]7 [/SUP]Reesus said to him, “It is written again, ‘That's a reflecting pool, numb nuts. It's like 1 foot deep, forget it.’ ”

[SUP]8 [/SUP]Again, the devil Brian took him to an exceedingly slummy part of North Baton Rouge, and showed him all the rednecks and their glory. [SUP]9 [/SUP]And he said to him, “All these things and an extra $400,000 I will give you if you stay my Offensive Coordinator and worship me.”

[SUP]10 [/SUP]Then Reesus said to him, [SUP][b][/SUP]“Away with you, BK! For it is written, ‘You shall love the Lady on the Dome, and the Notre Dame faithful only shall you serve.’ Also, fuck the Tigers.”

[SUP]11 [/SUP]Then the devil left him, and behold, players came and hoisted the Reesus on their shoulders.
