How cool is that?! Don't get me wrong, I want to see Dayne and Tommy, but we have already seen them in action. It will be really fun to watch two quasi-unknowns battle it out, when both know that playing time during the season could be on the line. It's going to be fun to watch.

I love that we will get to see a lot of Hendrix, but I also reallllllllly wanted to see the progression of Dayne and Tommy.

@hansensouthbend: #NotreDame head football coach Brian Kelly said today the quarterback competition will carry into the summer.

Seems like BK wants one of Hendrix or Golson to emerge and may not be sold on Crist or Rees just yet. Already said Spring won't decide QB battle and that Hendrix/Golson will see the lion's share of action in the Spring Game. Interesting.

Kelly basically said that Rees was slipping, and then he had an excellent practice today and got himself back in the mix.

It could be Kelly wanting Hendrix or Golson to emerge as the second QB in a dual QB system.. Kelly WILL have a true spread package for one of those guys this season.

All OL will wear green jerseys in the spring game.

Neither Wood nor Gray will get a lot of carries, either.

So basically the spring game will feature no RBs, no Manti, not much Dayne or Tommy, no Michael Floyd, and probably driving rain.

Wow. Can't wait. Tight end fest in the slop.

I think that they should give Louis Nix some carries. :rockwoot:

“It’s what we do 365 days a year. It’s called balance, with developing and preparing your football team at the same time always looking toward your future. Don’t mortgage your future, don’t live in the past, stay in the present. But the reality of BCS football, you’ve got to balance all of those things.”

I'll keep that in mind for NCAA Football '12 :)

Earlier in practice Coach said that last Spring he didn't want the QBs hit, but this year they'll be getting hit. Maybe he still wants to minimize Dayne's hits though.

Holy snap no redshirts for the B&G game? Not even for Crist and Tommy? I thought he only said he wanted Andrew and Everett getting hit.

I think you are correct. I would be shocked if Crist was not in a red jersey. BK said Crist and Rees wouldn't see a whole lot of action on Saturday and the other two QBs would be full go.

@eTruth_Irish:#NotreDame coach Brian Kelly on QB competition: "If I had Andrew Luck I'd be very happy right now. ... I'd love to have one guy."

This says enough for me....

Since no one QB seems to be taking the bull by the horns. I think BK is trying to decide what is the best course of action to win games. is it primarily thru crist/rees pro-style with Hendrix and Golson getting their own packages? Or it Hendrix/Golson pimarily, with Crist coming in for Pro-style packages (and Rees backing up Crist). Either way I see 2 offensive plans getting developed, a pro-style and a BK-style.

They just need to figure out a balance between how much pro-style, and how much BK-style. I think personnel will dictate the direction they go in. I still think its Crist primarily thru the pro-style offense, with Hendrix/Golson getting their own packages during games to exploit mismatches the coaching staff will identify in-game.

Another different angle on the same subject, Why hasnt Crist distanced himself in the QB race? most thought the job was Crist to lose...is it because he is just coming off injury and needs more time to get up to speed, or is it because the other QB's have caught up to him?

On many levels I think he has but BK is being fair... and competition is very healthy. You don't anoint someone unless they are a returning/undisputed starter and right now we don't have that.

Lax, you might be correct, but I don't know. Kelly said earlier [I thought he said this clearly] that he wanted to come out of Spring with this QB situation settled as to who had the reins. Now he has said that the QB competition will go on in the Summer. I read this as he does NOT see "his guy" yet, and that this is not at all settled. The only way that I could interpret this is that Dayne has not yet separated himself from the others and that this is still a horse race. By the way, I don't care at all who "wins" this race. All the QBs are the same in that sense to me.

Im thinking this may be a better, more advanced, crop of QB's that BK wasn't planning on. I think he was thinking one would run away with the competition but hasn't because of the talent. We know what Rees can do. Can Hendrix do just as good if not better? Can Golson be such a threat that we need to install a big package for him to get serious PT this year? I think BK is at home smiling at the predicament he has been put in. Guess we will see sat.

It could also be that BK has his QB for next season picked but if he leans to hard toward one favorite you might loose some of the effort from the others. BK loves to get the most out of his players thru competition so I think he'll keep the idea of it being a true competition with no front runner for as long as he can. I guess only he will know!

He said after practice that he was about to rule Tommy out but then he had an awesome practice today. I think we all know/ think Dayne is the starter, but as so many pointed out, competition breeds success.

I think this is the answer.

I for one have to think that Crist is kind of running away with this thing. But, if you say "he's my guy" there goes some very healthy competition that you would have otherwise had.

Plus, it looks good to recruits like Gunner and Mauk that there is always competition. If you play better than the next guy, you're in. From what I read, this is how USC stockpiled so many 5* kids at one position, they all felt that they had a shot no matter who was in front of them.

Wait a minute, so your telling me that it was competition is reason USC was able to stockpile so many 5* kids??? I always thought it was money.

I also agree with this. From the reports/videos I've read/seen, it seems that Crist is far and away much better than the other quarterbacks. We all know Dayne struggled with certain things last season. Kelly might be announcing that the race is still on to keep pushing him to getting better.

I try to give them some credit. As much as I hate them, I'm sure not all of them were paid off and the promise of competition did lots to bring them in.

I think this could be part of it, but I also think that BK is worried that Dayne will be injured. And if Dayne goes down, he would rather everyone believe that Tommy is just as good than to have everyone think their screwed now because #1 QB is down. Gives Tommy the confidence that hes just as good and everyone around him will still support him and have hope.
Extremely intelligent IMHO.

I think it's a great idea. It is building confidence not just in Tommy, but Golson and Hendrix aswell. This is a great situation to be in. Does anyone remenber the Michigan game last year, that sucked. No way that happens if Dayne goes down this year.

If Danye isn't the starter I'll be shocked... but I'm also not buying that the number one guy is the only guy... I'd expect another package with someone else somewhere...
