From my experiences with that particular drill, the point is to engage the blocker until the RB choses to go left or right then you try and shed the blocker to tackle him. In the case of Lynch he engaged but right as he engaged the Rb was already right behind the blocker so he had no choice but to shed his blocker quickly and effectively.

This is correct. Diaco was not happy with that move in this particular drill. Diaco has said that both Ishaq and Lynch are both a long way from seeing the field. They still need to "learn how to attend meetings" according to Diaco. Obviously they are both great athletes, but little things are still missing, including correctly going through a drill.

And Diaco "(Ishaq) doesn’t know how to practice. Forget about what to do or even how to deliver a blow, he’s got to learn how to practice."

Thanks clashmore mike for all the "evidence." These guys may have all the ability in the world, but they won't see the field if the coaches can't trust them.

Great analysis. Feel very comfortable about the 2 deep at OLB knowing that we have Spond/Shembo and Fleming. If any of those guys get hurt it helps to know that Shembo has reps at Fleming's spot and that we also have Filer.

Ethan Johnson is guy I'd like to hear more about. Is he going to breakout this year or keep the status quo? I'm pretty darn confident with Cwynar/Nix in the middle and KLM... and it's good to know that Kona should be a very good spot duty DE.

Give Lynch and Ishaq time. My hope is that they continue to absorb information and by the time the season rolls around they are capable of being effective spot duty players whose role expands as necessary.

Yes thanks clashmore and military for the analysis. I have no clue when it comes to technique in drills.

My two cents on the Lynch "success" but failure move: I believe that it was Kelly, but it could have been Diaco, who characterized Aaron's high school dominance as due mainly to being faster than everybody and then big enough to finish the tackle. He said that Aaron had to get the tough-in-the-trenches part of college defensive lineplay down before he could really shine on the field at this level.

With that thought, or player deficiency, in the staff's minds, it is VERY likely that even a "successful" move wrongly tried in a specific drill would gather the coach's ire rather than admiration. This is something that a young guy has to have perspective about so as to accept his "success" as a failure when it has been his consistent meal-ticket in the past.

Fortunately the staff loves Aaron, so I assume that the teaching lessons will go well. And if a guy like Manti could swallow Kelly telling him that he wasn't very good in 2009, how could a rookie think that he was above that? I have great hopes for Lynch et al and am sure that he and the other rooks will take the teaching to heart.

I'd actually be more shocked to see an EE come in and do everything correctly. These players are moving up a level and are obviously learning new things and breaking old habits. I think it's pretty normal. It's a learning process and thankfully we have coaches that want to teach the correct process instead of getting by on ability only. Talent is making the right choices.

On a different note, Kelly said currently he has Theo and Cierre returning kicks but doesn't necessarily want that come fall become they are too valuable at their skill positions. He said he will potentially be looking to incoming freshman to step up in this area.

I don't care who returns kicks as long as Theo returns punts.

great vid post,

I'm really pumped hearing the way they talked about Prince...

He really got to be one of my favorite defenders last year, and I hope he keeps it up.

Nah, fellas. The most impressive part of that video wasn't Lynch. It wasn't Nix or Spond or Fox or Lewis-Moore.

Brian Kelly, Dayne Crist and myself only noticed that our starting LT is on the verge of becoming a super star. We couldn't care less about the shiny things you guys noticed.

At no point did Zach ever allow our best defensive lineman over the past two season to ever think that he(Ethan) was ever going to get unhitched from Martin's block. I mean, Ethan couldn't ever get his arm out from the block.

A complete beat down by Martin. Both times, mind you, and in a text book manner. WOW! Dayne is going to get alot of sleep on Friday nights!

Thanks Iron.
Didn't really say anything different..just what we've already heard.
That Brian Bennett, the reporter, is such a moron. He looks so clueless and insecure...its sad. But I guess thats ESPN for ya.
He doesn't even ask about Floyd.

IrishBlood81, a chara,

I certainly wasn't trying to pick on your post exclusively. (Suggesting I was a troll was a flashpoint.) What I was reacting to was the behavior; Dumping and thumping. So the guy leaves a little to be desired, I get that he was giving it his best.

In my ideal, ND fans are above the rest, just like the University itself. Have you ever been at an ND game? How about one in Huntington, Columbus Ann Arbor, East Lansing, or Morgantown? My home is between all of them. Remember “We are Marshal?” I dressed for a team that played them not too long after their resurgence. In those days, they used to heat up “nuts and bolts” and throw/sling them at us, (the visiting team.) And it wasn’t one or two, either! We had plenty of offers from the stands to get our “asses kicked” or “our nuts cut-off.” Their ingenuity was outstanding; the rest left a little to be desired.

So to summarize living in the land of *******s, among some truly rabid fans, I don’t appreciate when we, the IRISH nation, act the same way as those churlish individuals act. This is the only time you will see me criticize other schools fan bases abstractly and generally. Calling someone a useless penis, is what I would warrant these other schools would do – let alone calling some poor working stiff, who hasn’t got his craft perfected, one. (Pun intended.)

IrishBlood81, my criticism was of a growing wave of action, not directed toward you. As I said earlier, the troll thing moved me to action. I have seen your body of work, and you have some very insightful stuff. Me I would rather get along with everyone.

Beir bua agus beannacht,

Bogtrotter

PS: for all you who just had to bring all of your equipment issues into this thread: enjoy from about 0:50 to about 1:14. The rest is a bonus.

What do you call what he did?

Some coaches would call Lynch's action on that play "poor arm technique" and" bullfighting". Among a bunch of other things. It was size and quickness and heart that allowed him to make the stop, but if he were to do that all the time he would give up big runs more often than not.

The point of that drill is for the D to create separation, square up, and shed the blocker and get to the ball. Probably more suited to finding your true noseguard. The technique of the arm and total body action should resemble an incline press action. I just glanced at the video once and noticed #9 and #99 did a nice job. Watch #99 at about :46 of the video. Nice stuff. He needs quicker feet though. lol. It was very apparent to me that Lynch never got separation, never used the incline bench action, and instead "caught" the Olineman and allowed him to get to his body. His used his quickness to go around him (like a bullfighter) and also "caught" the RB rather than squaring up. It is tough to do.

Here's a good video to help explain (if you have about 3 minutes, but the first minute describes it well.

that's a great video... I never quite knew the intricacies of Dline technique.

Makes sense why Bob wasn't very happy with him then.

^^+1 my friend. Though it is fun to watch defensive linemen do well, as it has been a weak spot for us in the past.

Everyone looked solid, however I was hoping to see more out of Filer... It was obviously a small sample size but he didn't stand out at all in that vid.
