So the San Diego newspaper floated an idea today that if the Chargers move to LA, the Raiders could move to San Diego.

The gist is the existing San Diego Stadium, which still needs to be replaced, is better than what Oakland plays at right now. And San Diego may not have enough time to build something new for the Chargers but they could do something in several years for the Raiders.

Anyways...

IF this were to happen, do you think the new team should keep the Raiders name/history or start new.

Personally, I think they would have to start new as the Raiders and their fans are hated in San Diego like no other. You would need a clean break for it to work. But that's a lot of history to go away.....

The whole thing falls short to me with the notion that The Murph is some huge upgrade on the Oakland Coliseum... it'd be moving from one of the worst venues in pro sports to one of the worst venues in pro sports.

San Diego is a strange..strange place. It's a city but really just a town with a bunch of NIMBYs who oppose everything that costs money but does not benefit them.

Put it this way, Irwin Jacobs (Qualcomm) wanted to put like $100M of his own money into a project for Balboa Park which is a centerpiece like Central Park in NYC but a small faction of NIMBYs blocked it because they thought it would take away from the view of a bridge...which is over an ugly expressway. He pretty much told the city to F Off after that and he and his wife would find other places to give away their Billions.

It's a strange..strange place.

2 years ago I would have agreed but not today.

The number of teams that need new stadiums is a tiny fraction compared to 15 years ago. The blackmail game was real but that card is not what it used to be.

I think now, not having a team in LA is costing the NFL more money than the blackmail card.

Bingo.
They might get $400M out of St. Louis. Maybe a comparable sum out of Jacksonville eventually. But the number of cities willing to play that game is shrinking (Oakland just won't, and wake me up when San Diego actually posts the kind of cash they're talking about to keep the Chargers).
Meanwhile the NFL can make a boatload on PSLs and sponsorships in a fancy new stadium in LA, with the proceeds spread across the league through relocation fees. They get a high-profile franchise in the nation's second-biggest market. And if they have to, they can use St. Louis, or London, as the new blackmail city.
Someone will move to LA. Whether it's the Rams or the Chargers is probably really up to the owners at this point. But the Raiders aren't moving to San Diego. That makes no sense.

This isn't so much a team wanting to be in LA as much as it is the NFL wanting a team in LA. They've been trying since the Rams left and for the life of me don't understand the reasoning. The Raiders couldn't make a profit so why would another team be able to? The competition for the entertainment dollar is probably the highest in the country. You have the Lakers, Clippers, Dodgers, Kings, USC, UCLA a dozen other colleges in the general area, the beach, Disneyland, etc., etc.. Plus getting to a venue in LA is the most difficult in the country.

The NFL has done fine without being in LA.

Agreed... you also have the Ducks and Angels within sight of downtown and you have multiple other factors like the Fontana track and numerous resort communities within an hour drive... but yeah, the NFL seems to be dead set.

The Nevada Senate approved the bill to provide the public funding of $750 million for a new stadium 16-5. The vote from the NV House of Representatives is scheduled for tomorrow and is expected to meet the 2/3 majority required for a tax increase which is in the bill. The Governor will sign it - since he bothered to call a special session of the Legislature for this.

If all goes as planned tomorrow, the final step will be for the NFL owners to approve it with a 3/4 majority vote in Jan or Feb '17. My guess is this will happen and Oakland will not come up with as compelling a plan (to the commissioner's dismay) and the Raiders move in 2020.

Technically, it isn't the NFL that ever pays for anything to do with the teams and their stadiums. The franchises are all their own entity and have to come up with the moneys themselves to build a stadium. On top of that, public funds are used as a new stadium is seen as a public good that will promote job growth, housing, etc. This is especially true today as we see more stadiums being built within the cities again (exception being the 49ers), as a way to gentrify the neighborhoods around the stadium. We also know just how passionate people are about their sports. Fans don't want to see their team leave the city, and those in charge of the city don't want to be the administration that left the team walk.

Oh absolutely. I took a class on Sports Geography in college and it discussed the building of stadiums with public money. Rarely do the taxpayers see the fruit of their burden so to speak. Especially true when many cannot enjoy the games in the new stadium due to the price of a ticket, parking, food, etc.
