No. That isn't the issue.
They are simply all sub-forums of the Play Like a Champion Today parent forum because of this the sub-titles are all you see underneath that when you click on the forums tab, but if you click on the PLACT title, you can see all of the sub-forums broken down like his picture shows above.
I did a little rearranging just now, basically moving all of the forums out of a parent container. So entering the forums from the main nav bar takes you to a more expanded view of the sub forums.
If anything it seems more efficient and loads/posts quicker under the new software compared to the updated BB code.

I've looked in to that already. Adding the custom field to everyone's user info is no big deal, but I can't find an add-on or package to install that would include most/all of the team icons people would want.
