Maybe Subway is cheaper where you're at? The $5 was just to make a point. Can you actually get a lunch for $5? If I'm getting a 12-inch and a soda here, it's going to run me about $10 unless it's one of their monthly specials.

What in the hell are you ordering?

I also just get a six inch, because i'm not one to live in excess.

Something regular? Turkey on wheat. Roast beef on Italian. It's over $7 for a foot long.

You would like foot longs...

That's like twice as much food as you would order at McDonalds or Taco Bell.

The difference in price is probably a footlong, premium sub with added meal. My example was just a 6" turkey, no meal.

I turned on the game to check the score and see Liam Neeson doing his now tired Taken spiel for a stupid kid's video game. Mr. Neeson meet Mr. Shark.

Subway < McDonalds == Taco Bell?
Your Subway must really suck. Not saying Subway is gourmet dining, but it's at least somewhat better for you than McDonalds or Taco Bell. Your $5 may or may not get you more food from Subway than the other two, but I would think the quality of the food is at least slightly better.

For $5 I am eat at In-N-Out.

For the money, yes. But Subway offers a lot healthier choices and the "caliber of shittiness" is per the individual. I happen to enjoy the turkey on wheat. My $5 gets me a whopping 280 calories of food. Compare that to when my inner-fat-kid wins and I go to McDs where my $5 gets me a 1220 calorie, quarter pounder with cheese meal. A lot more food for the money. But a lot more calories as well.

A couple years ago, one of the economists behind Freakanomics made headlines by declaring that the McDouble was "the cheapest, most nutritious, and bountiful food that has ever existed in human history":

The double cheeseburger provides 390 calories, 23 grams of protein – half a daily serving – seven per cent of daily fibre, 19 grams of fat and 20 per cent of daily calcium, all for... $1

Exactly. If you're poor and starving, you worry about calories per dollar before you think about vitamin composition and antioxidants.

While this is accurate, the avg American probably orders that as a meal: LG Fry, LG Coke...for additional 790 calories. Also, our discussion began with $5 in our pockets. Americans tend to spend what they have (and then some). Very few would stop at a $1 Double Cheese.

I agree with Wiz about calories per dollar. But I'm curious what a diet consisting of this looks like long term.

You can go way overboard with unhealthy choices at Subway, just as you can get healthier options at McDs. But the reality is you've kind of already made up your mind which direction you're going to go, nutrition-wise, as soon as you choose to the Golden Arches or to be Jared's double date. For me, when I choose McDs, I'm accepting that I will be eating 1200 calories in a sitting. When I choose Subway, I'm saying that today I plan to eat healthy and I will subconsciously make healthier choices...a product of the environment.

You guys made me want Subway. Just bought for the four guys in the office. Four footlongs - four bags of chips - One large drink = $28.68.

McDonald's started Chipoltes though.

Didn't start it but did own a sizable portion of the company at one point. Had McD's not been associated with Chipotle, no doubt they wouldn't be where they are today. Steve Ells learned a lot from building a national business from McD's, like how easy it is to expand with other peoples' money.

A friend of mine who's with corporate in Oak Brook told me the joke at McD's is... When McD's makes a mistake (letting Chipotle go) it still makes a billion dollars.

Note to self: Sandwiches are basically free in Ohio.
