A couple years ago, one of the economists behind
Freakanomics made headlines by declaring that the McDouble was "the cheapest, most nutritious, and bountiful food that has ever existed in human history":
While this is accurate, the avg American probably orders that as a meal: LG Fry, LG Coke...for additional 790 calories. Also, our discussion began with $5 in our pockets. Americans tend to spend what they have (and then some). Very few would stop at a $1 Double Cheese.
I agree with Wiz about calories per dollar. But I'm curious what a diet consisting of this looks like long term.
You can go way overboard with unhealthy choices at Subway, just as you can get healthier options at McDs. But the reality is you've kind of already made up your mind which direction you're going to go, nutrition-wise, as soon as you choose to the Golden Arches or to be Jared's double date. For me, when I choose McDs, I'm accepting that I will be eating 1200 calories in a sitting. When I choose Subway, I'm saying that today I plan to eat healthy and I will subconsciously make healthier choices...a product of the environment.
