Something I noticed from today's video from practice, Tuitt is wearing the grill that I have in my avatar on his helmet. Looks like it's for real boys. Man I love Notre Dame football.

Edit: Just realized you mentioned that up above, Zbi. My bad.

Do you think I am surprised that Rees is outplaying Golson and Hendrix IN PRACTICE? Like I stated before, Rees should be outplaying Golson and Hendrix in practice. He has had enough game experience to walk through practice without a sweat. Rees performing well in practice against Golson (who hasn't played a snap in college football) and Hendrix (who was thrown into the Stanford trees) should be expected. That is why I think this QB competition is BS.

What is the point of Kelly announcing a QB competition? A motivation tool for Rees? Really? Or does he think that we need to go to another direction? If that is the case, why did he limit the offense this spring? When is Golson or Hendrix going to practice the full offense?..against Navy? Come on. I hope I am DEAD WRONG SO YOU CAN SAY I TOLD YOU SO, but rationally Kelly's decisions are just not adding up.

I am believe in a Lincoln style of leadership. You continually replace ineffective. You keep replacing until you have a hardass that gets the job done.

I am far from a Rees fan, but the fact still remains that if Golson and Hendrix could show an ability to execute the offense's basics consistently, they would move to the next level. That they can't handle the basics is not good--Golson can't hold onto the football and when he does seems to have problems throwing consistently and Hendrix has problems with the latter.

I don't care what someone's HS highlight tape looks like. I don't even care what the current Spring practice highlight tape looks like. Those are highlights--I sure as hell hope they look good on those films. Carlyle Holiday's highlight tape would have made you think he was going to be Michael Vick 2.0. I think we can all agree, he was not.

I don't care if a guy can do something amazing if he can't handle the routine. By almost all reports, Hendrix and Golson cannot handle the routine. Rees does moreso than they do. That's why he's gotten the pt and they haven't.

I hope that changes, but the more the reports come out, the less hopeful I am.

Just for one year, I want to be able to not wince when ever the ball is thrown into the air deep. Every year it seems our secondary has been lacking, and I don't see it changing quickly.

Agree with this. My dad has taken the habit of blurting out "WIDE OPEN!" every time the opposition throws a deep ball. Even before he sees the intended target. It's a Pavlovian response at this point, having been well-trained by years of terrible secondaries from ND and the Bears.

Sorry if this has been discussed already, but has anyone heard anything about Niklas switching back to defense with the recent departure a certain defensive end?

You could have a couple of all-American CBs, but I think you still wince each time that a QB throws deep against your defense (at least on TV). Maybe that's just me...

I have to wince at so many things during the game, I just want one less. My worst memory this year was sitting in the USF section next to the goal line during the first drive..

There was a lot to like out there today!

Jeebus... Theo and Toma are different players this year.

Golson looked like he is starting to get it too. He still looks a little timid and not as decisive as I would like, but when he lets his instincts take over, he is electric.

This

Also, my observations on things thus far: Theo looks ridiculously good. Sheldon Day is a freaking man child make no mistake about that. Jarrett Grace and Ben Councell have very high ceilings and will be major contributors before they are done. Kona is a monster, I love that man (in a very non creepy way), no one is better than Big Lou in the Rodeo drill, he is F'in dominant, Nick Martin is going to be really good. Tuitt is going to give opposing teams lots of trouble.

Concerns: Until the QB situation is resolved and someone becomes really strong, not much else will matter, we need a wideout to step up and be a star. The TE's will be as good as most TE units in the country led by the best TE in the country, but this team needs to go vertical and this is going to be a joint venture for the QB and the WR's. We saw how this team struggled last year when it couldn't go vertical w arguably the best WR in the nation. A repeat of that will allow teams to continually stack the box which will limit the effectiveness of Tyler and the RB group (which also has the potential to be scary good). CB's need to hold the fort. If they can maintain coverage for 4-5 seconds, this defense will hold teams to low point totals.

I am really excited to see Grace and Kona get some major playing time this year! Grace is probably the most exciting player to watch for in these videos. He has a big hit nearly every practice.

I don't know what you guys are watching, but with every video that has a qb I am less and less impressed by Golson. Please inform me why you think he is doing well in practice (not a mean question, I'm just curious-- what do you see? What do you think?). obviously I'm not qb expert but to me he just seems behind on every throw in comparison with other qbs. I came into spring practice with the opinion that Golson would be the starter but my faith in that belief has dwindled.

His ability to scramble is superior to any of the other QBs. That video also showed him making some very nice throws. What are you seeing that makes him look behind on every throw?

When near a sideline, aren't you supposed to hold the ball toward the sideline?

Yes, but you also don't want to change hands too often.

One thing I noticed in the April 16th video that focused on the DL: Ishaq was with the DL group for most of the practice it seemed. I dont know if he simply going back and forth from LB to DL, but I find it odd that is working with the DL instead of the LB core. I dont think they would position switch Ishaq again...

I am concerned about the depth on the d-line. Outside of Tuitt, KLM, and Nix no one has really played that much.

True, but Day is looking like a stud.. more impressed every time I see him.

Kona is garnering raves from the staff and the incoming Mr. Jones is an absolute monster of a young man, and those are only the ones I can think of off hand.

Plus, the ones you named are pretty damn good.

I think we're OK on the D-line.

Kona has played and has looked great this spring, Stockton is a senior and can contribute, Chase Hounshell has played and was good enough to play his freshman year, Springmann isn't someone you can forget about, Sheldon Day has been doing great for an incoming freshman this spring, and Utopo has been going back and forth between D-line and LB but has some real talent at both.

D-line is one of the last places you need to worry about.
