I know this is probably a pipe dream, but is it at all possible that there has been communication between Fleck and ND and the reason Fleck is turning down these other jobs is because an agreement is in place in which he will succeed BK at a certain point?

makes for fun speculation, but can you honestly picture jack saying to Fleck or his agent "we got BK on show me basis in 2017, so hang in there, if he fucks up youre our guy".
no way in hell Jack ever has that type of conversation. jack is many things but one thing I think about him is that he doesn't deal or get involved in behind the scenes type BS that another AD might. he does things by the book.

we can debate whether his style helps/hurts ND football short and long term but he is a stand up guy and up front guy on "the process" and I highly doubt he is dealing/working things out with any coach behind the scenes in the fashion suggested above with Fleck

A program that knows how to close the deal with a coach who wants his "dream job"...

It is a tiny-bit possible, in the sense that all things are possible.

I think it's not out of the realm of possibility. Fleck is next in line as the hot ticket item in the mid tier conferences to move into the big boy leagues.

He will get a big gig no matter how long he stays at WMU (while getting paid handsomely from the sounds of it).

JS could say, hey, if you are interested in ND - if BK doesn't make it past next year, you are our top candidate. Are you willing to wait it out one year possibly? If BK stays, you will still get a good top tier HC spot if you want to start moving.

Every year there are going to be big HC positions open.

Wonder how many faxes and emails he's going to receive now...

I wonder if some of these programs are turned off by his personality. I wonder if AD's and such at bigger programs could handle all the row the boat stuff and what not. I'm all for it, and I think the kids eat it up. But what about the suits?

this was noted by several SOURCES that this stuff just wouldn't fly at oregon and other bigger programs

I'm not surprised. The powers at be at BIG programs would tell him the stick his oar up his keester by week 3.

That doesn't mean I don't want him. I do. I think he is exactly what we need, but there is a reason we've never really had a coach anywhere near his personality and 'style'. Lou would get you fired up, but it was a more cerebral way.

Lou wasn't afraid to dress you down if he thought you needed it.

I'm not talking about chewing ass when needed. I'm talking in a motivational way. Fleck is very energetic, talks about row boats and everyone freaks out.
Lou took a different approach.

Can't see BK in a dark room wispering to these guys...and somehow I'm OK with that.

I have a feeling this is going to end bad for him.

Maybe, but you can't really argue with the gains he made at WK or USF. Solid record of improvement. I also read a few places he's great on the recruiting trail. QB as a player and that can only help.

Going from USF to Oregon is like going from A-ball to MLB. Huge difference. I like to see people like him do well. I just hope he didn't bite more than he can chew.

Agreed.
Every coach, and every team has to make a jump now and then. I'm thinking its a 50/50 shot for both. I just want to see them beat USC. From all I've read, he's a good guy. Hope it works out.

No, I can't. HOWEVER, what I can see is an arrangement among ND/BK/Fleck in which BK will exit next year no matter what. If it's another bad season, he gets let go on merit and at the least the school can say they gave him a fair chance to right the ship based on past results. If he does well, he can use that as an opportunity to turn it into an NFL gig -- think about the narrative of turning around ND AGAIN. In either case, it's possible (maybe?) that this arrangement has been communicated to Fleck. Perhaps there IS a deal, whether verbal or in writing, that states that Fleck is next man in, guaranteed for 2018. I know it sounds like a bunch of fan fiction, but is it impossible?

Chip Kelley was at New Hampshire prior to getting hired at Oregon. Granted he started as OC, but he was promoted to HC after just one year. Hell I didn't even know New Hampshire played football.

Kiffen to Houston is all but done, just waiting on University Pres approval as per BR.
