You'd rather start a more athletic freshman who has no idea where he's supposed to line up?

A kid who has gone through all of spring ball and two a days really should know what he is doing. I know he was hurt a little this fall but that goes back to BVG's dumbass system. I actually would feel better with him back there than Sebastian. Nothing against him but he is a SS who could barely get on the field for a bad Cal team.

This is the kid I pointed out to be the most underrated member of the 2016 class that would be come a star. Unlike his brother he has a consistent motor. Kid is going to be a stud!

Hopefully we can control the clock and keep their offense/our defense off the field.

We're making these judgments on maybe 5% of the total data that BK has available to him, and he wants to beat Texas at least as badly as we do.

I understand (and share) the frustration with the complexity of BvG's system, but he's our DC this season, for better or for worse. Since that's not changing, we might as well trust the coaches to play whoever puts us in the best position to win.

It's been mentioned several times in various places that Sebastian struggles to turn and run in coverage.

I think he's been compared to a LB on several occasions.

Full quote: "No matter what happens, we're running the football,... unless we are in the red zone, then fades all day like it's 2006 baby!"

I actually agree with you. They want to win way worse than any of us and will play who they think will give them the best chance to win. No doubt.

How bad is Jay Hayes's ankle right now? I was hoping he would be able to start.

I don't know if it's game-day nearing, finally seeing the depth chart, or that stat comparing this season to 2007... but I'm officially worried...

I got the same feeling once I looked at the depth chart. I don't really know why but all the sudden my expectations went into the dumper.

I'm not really sure what you guys are worried about. Charlie Weis isn't here anymore.

Eh, I don't see it. 1) We have QB's with experience, including 1 that started 11 games last year vs. guys that never played 2) Folston/Adams have played a ton of minutes and are way more talented than the backs we had in '07 3) A lot of experience with the first string OL 4) Defense returns a lot of guys that started or have a lot of playing experience (Morgan started a bunch of games in '14, but not last year).

Starts to me are overrated when you have guys that have played and are talented. Safety scares the crap out of me though... Not good.

Apparently Kelly expects a fightingirish26 who knows where to line up to be more effective than a fast freshman who's constantly blowing coverage. Don't see how that's obviously the wrong decision.

Come on man, every report I've seen has said sebastian is a major liability. Sure, he could be fine, but someone who is a major liability in coverage at SS is probably gonna have even more trouble at FS. And not sure where all of this so called experience is coming from, was hurt last year and when healthy at Cal was only really playing ST. He has a bunch of experience practicing against 3rd stringers I guess. And nobody, Kelly included, has said that Studstill is constantly blowing coverage. Look, I hope avery tears it up, but I'm allowed to voice my opinion.

See my last post above. Your opinion is based on a tiny fraction of the data the BK has available to him, and he wants to beat Texas at least as badly as you do.

If the ridiculous complexity of BvG's system is forcing us to play Avery over Studstill, just like it did with Schmidt over Morgan last year, then that's a legitimate gripe against him. But BvG will be our DC this season, for better or for worse. It's not as simple as "Just play Studstill".

I really don't feel good about this game. Couple a young team on the road, in a primetime night game, in a massive stadium, with maybe the two worst cover safeties we have seen in a long time = bad feelings. I really hope I am wrong.

If they (safeties) don't bite on every play-action or trick play...we are already better than last year.

I guarantee at least one, possibly more, WR double passes in this game... at least half the teams we played against last year used it against us with success... I see no reason why Texas wouldn't assume it wouldn't work now.

YES!

That D will wear down. They have talent, but little depth and were just God awful last year. I don't see them rebounding to the point that they can stop our run game

Just watched last year's highlights. Hopefully the UT o-line is Swiss cheese like last year's. Not having Will Fuller sucks.

I think ND wins by 20+ by pounding the rock with our 3-headed monster behind our high caliber OL. Safety might be an unknown, but I'm not going to be concerned until I'm given a reason. Studstill will get his chance at FS even if Avery starts there, and I think his reps will grow as his knowledge and experience grows.

We have so much young talent this year that I'm eager to see in action, but we also have some solid vets in key positions. Going to be fun to watch. I really don't get the concern about Texas. Based on last year's performance, they are a bad team until they demonstrate otherwise. ND 41-Texas 13.
