This. All the talk about a tough schedule, and it is ridiculously tough, but why can't we be the team for once that bursts back onto the national scene with an epic season!? Really, why not us!?

This is an interesting game. Michigan State is more than likely going to take a big step backward on offense, and a small step forward on defense.

Phil Steele has two Spartans on the 1st-team/2nd-team All-Big Ten this year. An OG and an OT. He has Le'Veon Bell as a the 4/5 best RB in the Big Ten. Simply put, the offense doesn't scare me.

Defensively, this is a very good team. Very good. I really don't see a glaring weakness. The Irish WR's and QB's will need to step up to take pressure off the RB's.

I wouldn't be surprised if this was a low-scoring affair.

It's crazy when you realize that the Irish haven't started out 3-0 since 2002.

SBNation's Bill Connelly previews the 2012 Spartans here.

Defining Success

When you win your division one year and return almost your entire defense and running game the next, you're going to keep the bar pretty high. It seems all but unanimous that Michigan is the division favorite, and the Spartans do travel to Ann Arbor (and Madison), but we'll say that if they don't at least make a run at another title, it was disappointing. We'll set the bar at 6-2 and 9-3.

Prognois

Mark Dantonio has brought a level of stability to East Lansing that had been lacking for quite a while. And if the offense can settle in despite a pretty rough early schedule, then he should have Michigan State in competition for the conference title once again. But Michigan's recent recruiting successes, if paired with a Michigan victory over State this fall (it would be their first since 2007), would provide quite a bit of urgency for the green and white. One of the cruelest aspects of college football is that the best way to become powerful is to have already been powerful once. A rise by Michigan could damage Michigan State's upward trajectory. There's a chance that the window of opportunity could be closing for State, and that makes 2012 very, very important.

MSU could easily be the best defense we face this season. Combining that with the Spartans' crazy home field advantage arguably makes them the most challenging team we'll face in the first half of the season.

Agreed, I am worried about MSU more than UM. however, their strengths on offense play into our strengths. They lost their long-time starting QB and captain as well as a couple weapons on the outside. I like our chances with our front 7 against their run game, the game will be decided by how well our offense plays against their defense.

That's putting it lightly. They've lost pretty much every important skill position player not named Le'Veon Bell.

Comments on MSU from Phil Steel Interview that Elevenwarriors just posted. Evidently Phil has us favored against Michigan but dogs to MSU. MSU is dogs to Michigan. I guess that means that Phil thinks all three teams are pretty even, with Home Field Advantage being the deciding factor. He apparently seems to have little concern regarding first year starting qb's which MSU and ND may both have.

11W: You released a formula the other day that identified national title contenders for the upcoming season based on past trends. One of the teams on that list was Michigan State. I’m not a believer at all in them this year. I think defensively they’re going to be really good. Offensively, I just don’t see it – they lost Kirk Cousins and B.J. Cunningham. What about Michigan State do you see that will make them a strong team this year?

PS: Look at the past three years’ national champion – all three had first-year starting quarterbacks. A lot of it does revolve around defenses. I rated Michigan State’s defense No. 8 in the country coming into this season. They’ve got the No. 10 defensive line, No. 2 linebackers and No. 15 defensive backs. You look at them offensively, yes, they do lose Cousins and they’re top four wide receivers. But last year’s running game, I thought, underachieved. You have Le’Veon Bell and (Larry) Caper in the backfield – I expect far better than 3.9 yards per carry. I think this year with the bulk of the offensive line coming back – four starters – there’s going to be more of a reliance on the run game. I think you’re going to see that improve to the 4.4 to 4.5 level.

And Andrew Maxwell is a pretty good quarterback. He’s not the veteran that Kirk Cousins was, but he’s also not a walk-on coming off the street. He’s a 6-foot-3, 212-pound kid with a good arm. He’s got enough years in the offense where he understands it. They added DeAnthony Arnett, the Tennessee transfer. They also have a solid special teams, which I rate No. 20.

I do have them as underdogs at Michigan and at Wisconsin. Those are in back-to-back weeks. But I have them favored in every other game. They have Ohio State at home, they have Nebraska at home. They’re a team that has a shot at winning the Legends Division.

A lot of people frown on first-year starting quarterbacks, but they own three straight national titles. After three of four games, you turn into a veteran.

MSU will be a force to be reckoned with. Mind you, ND came in and put a whoopin on em, but they finished their season with a 3rd OT victory against Georgia in the Outback bowl. They will have last season on their mind too, but I anticipate a good game, with a narrow ND win, but a win none the less.

MSU is going to be much, much worse on offense this year without Cousins. He was absolutely lights out tonight against the Bears. 18/23 for 264 & 3 TDs in one quarter of work. Unreal.

Guh, another thread highjacking... but I'm on board.

He really was. On draft day, I knew it was a HUGE mistake for the 'Skins to take both QB's because I knew how good Cousins is. They could trade either of them right now and be okay... or as okay the Redskins can be.

MSU will really miss him.

QB Maxwell may be a rookie starter this season but he's no kid. He's a RS Junior that played in 9 games over the past 2 seasons and was groomed to be Cousins successor. He's rushed for 6 yds on 10 carries (lost 39 yds) and completed 29 of 51 for 294 yds, 1 TD 0 INT. Maxwell Career QB EFF 111.76 (By comparison Cousins QB EFF 146..08, Rees QB EFF is 132.99 and Hendrix is 108.69, Golson NA). Most of Maxwell's 9 appearances were in garbage time against grossly inferior opponents. He did face Alabama's defense as a freshman 1 sack -8 yds, passing 2/6 43 yds 0 0

May he turn into a veteran in his fourth game!

I really just can't see MSU running on us very successfully. Our secondary is unproven, but Purdue will be a good growing opportunity, plus I think they'll just be a lot better athletes than MSU's receivers.

As long as our offense can be decently productive this should be a win (I really don't think they'll be ready for the speed of this offense). This is the first game that we can make a statement and it certainly feels like Kelly is finally getting the right winning attitude/mentality across now, a win here and we'll be in great position to lay the wood on Michigan the following week.

Michigan State G Blake Treadwell out 4-5 weeks - CBSSports.com
By Tom Fornelli
August 16, 2012

Michigan State has to replace quite a few skill players on offense this season, but the Spartans do have four of their five starters on the offensive line returning this season.

That fifth lineman, though, is going to be missing some time.

Michigan State announced that left guard Blake Treadwell suffered a hairline fracture in his tibia during a non-contact drill in practice on Wednesday.

The injury will keep him out for 4 to 5 weeks.

In Treadwell's place the Spartans will start Jack Allen, a redshirt freshman, until Treadwell is able to return. Which seems like it could be a problem, but with four other veteran starters on the line surrounding Allen, offensive coordinator Dan Roushar doesn't seem very worried about Allen.

"He's very sound," said Roushar of Allen. "He's an excellent run blocker. I think we've got a guy that's got a chance to be very special in there for us. He continues to get better. I like his work ethic and his determination."

Treadwell will miss Michigan State's opener against Boise State, though there's a chance he could be back in time to play against Notre Dame
.

Allen is 6-1, 295.

imo...this is the key game of the year. don't feel great about our chances against ok. and usc, but this would be a very quality win if we're able to beat them on the road.

Potentially being 3-0 going into the scUM game would create so much hype that gameweek would take forever. The mich st game will get some buzz itself as both teams could be in the top 20

Yeah, it will have buzz because of the rivalry, but I don't think ND will crack the rankings at 2-0 with wins over Navy and Purdue. And even 3-0 into UM will put us at best 24th me thinks. All of this, I am okay with. Rather be under-ranked than over-ranked.

Navy and Purdue would not be the most impressive wins, but they would most likely put us in at 20-25 going into mich st because odds are teams will lose at the back end of the rankings. Beating sparty could possibly put us at 15-22 especially considering they're a top ten team if they beat boise state

Any guesses on the line for this game? I think it will be MSU -7. This is going to be a tough game.. Let's hope the 7 injured are healthy and we can get a pass rush on Maxwell.

Bell will do okay on the ground but they won't be able to take the game over that way.. We'll have to keep Maxwell back-pedaling and force some mistakes/turnovers.

I don't see us lighting up the scoreboard against this D. 17-10 W

It all depends on our ability to stop Bell. If we can stop him we got a really good chance to ruin their year.
