I will go out on a limb.
Some have speculated why the investigation started on 29Jul, and the players identified weren't questioned about it until the 15Aug, almost two and a half weeks later.
On the evening of the 14th, rumors erupted on campus and among alumni; on the 15th mid morning the media went full gonzo. At 6:00PM, Fr. Jenkins acted uncomfortable, and Jack Swarbrick acted irritated in their press conference. They stated that the NCAA had been notified that morning. That led the more intelligent observers to note that the THURS EVE leaks were from an inside ND source, and the FRIDAY AM leaks were from inside the NCAA to the media.
The next day Philip Daniels started poo-pooing the whole thing.
But nothing has happened since.
From everything else anyone else has heard this thing may in fact be wrapped up and waiting for the Honesty Committee to decide the outcome, (See Wizards wonderfully informative post # 2138), which would mean someone, probably a faculty member, is insisting on the continuing with the charges, and someone, presumably all four named football players, are protesting the validity of the charges.
Now if this had been a sex for papers scam as originally reported, or as widespread as originally reported, and the charges had any legs there would have been a constant stream of rumors. But, nada.
As the smartest among us speculated, this is probably "Much Ado About Nothing."
Or MAAN, I didn't do anything!
But who knows. The whole cheating ring was set up by KGB cold war operatives, that first infiltrated our Universities to destabilize our whole educational system. You can tell these operatives because they all are 70 year old freshmen, with no Russian accent, whatsoever!
