He's dealt with more serious shit storms before (Obama's commencement address, Te'o's fiasco, Declan Sullivan, Lizzy Seeburg, etc.) I don't see why the present allegations would be especially jarring for him.

Maybe he saw the porn they all made that was attached in the email

I guess maybe there is no good explanation as to why he performed poorly. I don't think lack of preparation explains it as it as a short statement and he probably had all day to practice if he wanted to.

Did he hold a presser for Te'o and Seeburg? I don't remember that. Thought Jack did the Te'o presser and there wasn't one for Seeburg.

Maybe "she" wrote his papers too?

I have to be frank. I'm really pissed off at how Notre Dame is handling this situation. They've pretty much botched this from the start. Just ridiculous at how badly they've overreacted to this. People want to say that the media is blowing this out of proportion (which I agree they are), but ND is at fault for making this a bigger deal than it actually is.

Secondly, if there isn't any concrete evidence that these 4 are in fact guilty, then why are they being pulled from practice? Is that really necessary? It only gives the media more ammunition, and pretty much sparked the speculation to begin with.

That being said, I'm with Koon on what he said earlier. Those guys fates need to be...no...BETTER be determined by the time classes begin. I wasn't expecting there to be a concrete decision past a weekend, as there is a lot of digging the university has to do I guess (though the fact that they need to go through YEARS of emails seems rather excessive). That being said, if their fates aren't decided by the time the Rice game comes around, it just makes them look worse.

It's time for them to put up or shut up. You created this whole debacle, you fix it.

Just to be clear, I'm not mad at ND for upholding the codes of academic integrity, but the way they handled the PR and media side of the issue is just flat out atrocious.

But if he knew he was going to do a presser, why leak information and then wait 8 hours before doing the presser?

I've mentioned to some via PM what I thought were giveaways. And with some of the training that I've received over the years, some things stood out to me.

Let us also not forget that Father Jenkins is a priest. I don't think he's comfortable with delivering bullshit and he looked bad at the presser.

It appeared hurried and it also looks like an internal power struggle.

Just a few opinions of mine.

Without knowing the facts here, don't you think you may be speaking a little out of turn? Let the facts come out and then we can all decide just how effective the Admin handled the situation.

How about just a press release saying the players are suspended pending investigation (no need to even specify). Instead you send Fr. Jenkins up there to show how seriously you are taking the matter? Doesn't make sense to me unless they have something concrete.

You likely know more about this than I do, but that fact alone isn't necessarily dispositive of the claims at issue here. For instance, has it been established who first leaked this news? If it was someone on the inside with an agenda, Jenkins and Swarbrick may well have been caught flat-footed. And after the Manti fiasco, which could have been completely avoided had they gotten out in front of it in time, they may have decided that addressing it publicly and framing the debate on their own terms was less risky than remaining silent, even if they weren't prepared to do so.

Maybe. Or maybe this is the administration trying to apply the lessons it learned from Lennay Kekkua.

No I don't either. But to support that claim they could not have wanted DeadSpin to get ahold of it before everything panned out. It already started to leak out before ND reported a PC. Cause if Deadspin broke it and ND ended the investigation in a week, the media and everyone else would scream at a coverup or how ND ignored it all together. So it's possible but not likely.

Yeah, I have to believe that if they hold a press conference, the result is not going to be some bullshit crap like suspended for the first half of a game, or not allowed to attend sec media days to answer questions about your arrest. I think, at the least, 1-4 of the guys will get some sort of substantial penalty.

You more eloquently put this than I could. I was just going to post, "Do you think that Notre Dame's administration isn't capable of completely screwing up a public relations issue?... I think that they are fully capable of screwing up a PR situation on an epic level... totally capable..."

Not saying that I believe that the players are being reinstated. I just wouldn't be surprised if that is how it played out and we simply were simply getting in our own way... again...

I hear you. But I think all the presser did was make it sound serious and now if they clear these guys tomorrow we will be a laughing stock again.

Yup. Our annual self destructive behavior.

Oh and just to be clear I don't have any further knowledge about what's gong on at this point. My source (who has been 100% right about everything that has occurred publicly) shared stuff with me that I've shared with some of you and we will have to see if it turns out to be true.

So I'm spitballing with all of you at this point.

Better being the laughing stock, which we already are, than being a university that may have covered a cheating scandal up. Coming from a highly academic friendly school, I'd say that would be the better possibility.

You don't have to hold a presser to avoid "covering up cheating." Like I said, just release a statement.

Auburn teaches a two week seminar on how all this stuff works. There are a few available slots left as the rest of the SEC schools had a few spaces left over. As a Bama fan, I would highly suggest other schools look in to it. It pays huge dividends most years.

Isn't the fact that Jenkins was apparently so unprepared for the press conference prima facie evidence that it was a hurried strategic move ("let's get out in front of this thing") instead of a carefully calculated response based upon the seriousness of the allegations and the strength of the evidence? I've never seen him come across so poorly on camera.

No, we've got a debate on Memphis basketball and rules interpretations going on. Calipari hasn't chimed in with the real story yet.

Or he could have been really nervous because it's very serious....

He knew the night before that he was doing the presser. I think that's enough time to at least look comfortable giving the written statement.

I agree and I don't think Jack was brought into this until the last minute. If only they would have let him handle the PC.

He's dealt with more serious shit storms before (Obama's commencement address, Te'o's fiasco, Declan Sullivan, Lizzy Seeburg, etc.) I don't see why the present allegations would be especially jarring for him.

That is what I was thinking as well. Father Jenkins is a pretty good public speaker, but you could tell he was not prepared for this.

The news was leaked, no one is sure by who, but it seems like it was not ND and they made a press conference simply because it was blowing up on the media and they had to.

I know I'm just arguing with you to stir a possibility in there. As I said above I agree with you. Just an explanation that no one knows what the fuck is going on and there are a million legit possibilities out there.

I guess maybe there is no good explanation as to why he performed poorly. I don't think lack of preparation explains it as it as a short statement and he probably had all day to practice if he wanted to.

Anyway. So it seems like no new news today. Correct?

Nothing. Don't bother going back through unless you want to read a bunch of people arguing with each other and Memphis basketball scandal.

I'm just glad there's been no rumors or speculation.

Keith Arnold posted this link to a Chicago tv station interview w/ Davaris Daniels' dad. Video | NBC Chicago

NO ITALICS!?!?!?

I empathize with Mr. Daniels in many ways. Of course he is going to defend and believe his son's side of the story. Hopefully he is right in what he is saying.

Dad is saying what dad is supposed to say. If DD let dad go so public and did something wrong then DD should feel great shame. I hope that is not the case.

Without knowing the facts here, don't you think you may be speaking a little out of turn? Let the facts come out and then we can all decide just how effective the Admin handled the situation.

ND should have talked to the family... shamefull!

Someone had a post earlier stating it was illegal for the school to contact the parents.

Yep that what it.

New language? LOL

Didn't know if he was agreeing or not

If I'm a parent of an ND student (especially if I'm subsidizing the tuition, etc) one of the first things I do is have my kid sign & date the consent form. From the snippet I read, that's all that's keeping parents from accessing their children's records. If so, wouldn't the elder Daniels simply instruct Davaris to sign the consent form and then the coaches could speak to the parents?

I hope you find your dog, how can it get any worse. First the academic thing and now koon's dog runs away. Maybe there's some sort of animal, that we could make a sacrifice too. Like a giant buffalo, or some sort of monster, like something with the body of a walrus with the head of a sea lion. Or something with the body of an egret with the head of a meerkat. Or just... the head of a monkey, with the antlers of a reindeer, with, ah... the body of a porcupine.

Thanks, found him. He's neutered now so he stays in the area.

Any reason to come off the ledge based on those Sham report tweets? They seem to think it's a matter of time before 2/3 get cleared.

I haven't post here in years. Do read a lot of threads though. Good insight and conversation. This whole issue is absolutely heart wrenching. Just when I thought for once we had a good core team with outstanding players this crap happens. I think sometimes ND blow these types of situations out of proportion just to show how mighty the fist is. I understand our academic standards but sometimes this is the sole reason why I feel that we will always be that team that has a couple good years but never a dynasty again. It is something every year that takes the team 3 steps back.

I heard jack black punted it over a bridge EDIT: damn you found it already

Another tweet that "the shamrock report" had was something about being just fine for rice without these 4

I took that as we would have them back for Michigan

Again, I find it very unlikely that would be the case.
