Been rumored for awhile and popped up on some other board like ISD and NDNation. A poster on ISD with a strong connection just confirmed it.

The man is an absolute legend and genius. It's not hyperbole to say that he's one of the greatest people to have ever graced this earth. His impact was profound and lasting both for the University and outside of it. I have never met someone who has had something less than glowing to say about him.

If you're the religious type, please keep him in your prayers.

I'm not a member of ISD, care to paraphrase what's being said? I know Fr. Ted's been in fairly bad health for a few years, but I'm curious what's being said over there. I saw him in the library about a week ago.

How old is he, 94?

He's 97, almost 98. Father Ted is arguably the biggest reason why Notre Dame is the respected academic institution it is. Saddens me to hear he's unwell. I kind of assumed he'd live forever. At least his legacy will.

Prayers, for a recovery.

And prayers, for a speedy and comfortable passage if it's God's will.

He's waited long enough to secure his eternity if it's his time.

I'm sure many others look forward to his arrival.

As we will grieve his departure should it be his time...

He will be sorely missed. If you haven't read a biography on the man, I recommend this one.

My grandfather and Father Hesburgh knew each other. I think they might have attended Notre Dame at the same time. My mom had tried to get in contact with him a few years back but of course that is pretty difficult with a man of that stature. Incredible man with an incredible story. Truly one of the greatest things about this university is this man.

Anything we want to say about him seems to fall short. His impact and reach went well beyond Notre Dame. At 97 I'm guessing God feels he's done about all he can do here and he needs him up there.

Prayers for Father Hesburgh.

Father Hesburgh once approached Princeton about how to make the University better. He was told to let women in and to get rid of football. Obviously he did one but not the other.

Just goes to show you not everyone at Princeton is smart.

Wouldn't have been the same ND without him. Inspirational life and a powerful personality.

Rest in Peace, Father Ted. One of my biggest regrets is not getting to meet him during my time at ND, if only to thank him for making ND what it is.

RIP Father Ted. I was lucky enough to get to go to his office with one of my classes and hear him speak on the work he did with the civil rights act. Amazing man.

This is terrible news. I can't help but wonder who takes over and how will it affect ND football?

Not even sure what to say. Rest in peace. Legitimately saddening.
