My money is on Cooks being DC. Hope Elston is made Co-coordinator to keep him in the fold / increase his responsibilities. Elliott takes over all secondary.

Hire a QB coach, and a STs coach.

You're probably right. I think weathering this storm really comes down to retaining the other assistants.

Make Elston + Cooks co-DC and we probably keep everything together. I don't know if Elston or Elliot would follow Diaco for a promotion to DC but that really seems like biggest risk.

I think most if not all will stay. Being a OC or DC at UConn is not a stepping stone to HC like it is at bigger programs. UConn won't have the talent to showcase the coordinators talent.

I posted in Martin's thread on Butler U. and the Patriots and how they lose coaches and keep winning. They keep promoting from within to keep continuity. Then the newbies that are hired learn in the lower positions where there isn't as much responsibility and they have time to learn.

Makes way more sense. I had no idea why Elliot would get the gig.

I think to win games in season Elliott would be best personally. I think for a recruiting and ever changing college program, he wold probably be the worst in terms of excitement / hype, recruiting, etc.

Plus, who knows if he could physically handle it anyway.

If Cooks gets the DC job and Elston goes with Diaco....Larry Johnson Sr is currently looking for employment. Not a bad position coach.

If Ernest Jones is a good enough coach to stash on the payroll then he's getting called up to the staff now that there are two openings. Otherwise, I agree with this wholeheartedly. I think Booker's coaching assignments are rather odd (TEs and ST) and should maybe take WRs from Denbrock in the reshuffle..

Brain Kelly- Head Coach
Kerry Cooks- Defensive Coord
Tony Alford - Offensive Coordinator/Running Backs/Recruiting Coord.
Scott Booker - Tight Ends/Special Teams Coordinator
Bob Elliott- DB's
Mike Denbrock - Receivers/Passing Game Coordinator
Mike Elston - Defensive Line
Harry Hiestand - Offensive

so i think this is how we currently stand. who do we bring in for qb's or rb/slot, then linebacker coach?

Exactly. I have no doubt that Elliot would be the best DC in terms of the actual coaching and scheming, with all his experience. Whether he has the energy to be a coordinator and leader at this stage in his career is another matter though.

I agree. The other weird thing about Booker is that his background is on defense. I believe he was a safety at Kent State. It's only since he came to ND that he got involved with the offense, beginning as an intern.

We have too many guys with backgrounds in the secondary, between Cooks and Elliot and Booker and Ernest Jones.

I know that no one pays coordinators that much.

I still think ND DC > UCONN HC. That's the basis for my opinion.

Unless you want to be a head coach, you saw your stock rise meteorically last year and descend dramatically this year, and feel the need to make a move.

I'd agree we're better off promoting from within, probably for both of these jobs. Kelly's a systems guy and everyone in-house knows that system, players and coaches. It'll be a much smoother transition. Might be different if several assistants went with Diaco but it doesn't appear that's happening.

Serious question, not suggesting he should be our LB coach or DC anytime soon but is Spond as a GA in the works or a possibility? Just came to mind when I saw Big Lou's tweet

You know, you never know,” Kelly said. “I know that my coaches won't leave for lateral moves. They'll have to be leadership positions.

Exactly! They got the big job for coaches wanting to be the lead guy. These are great opportunities for Diaco and Martin. To me the key to prolonged success for ND is Alford. He will continue to bring in big name prospects.

That would be an amazing hire in IMO! With him and Alford on the staff recruiting would be a notch above what we are at now and that ain't too shabby.

After Mason I'd probably look at Wisconsin's DC Dave Doeren. He's a very good coach and coaches linebackers, too.

hes head coach at NC state and DC at wisconsin i think is named aaranda?sp

At least so far when we have had coaches leave Kelly has made some very good hires. So no reason not to trust him this time.

What about all the hubbub that said Kelly was not signing with ND until he got his assistants taken care of?

And honestly, I think that ND can do a LOT better on defense, anyway. Diaco had a good year. Narduzzi has been lights out for years.

Not to pile on Bob, but he was not good vs Bama (don't tell me that we could not have schemed better when we were given six weeks to prepare) through this year. Injuries had a lot to do with it, but not everything.

Hopefully ND finds a good DC to take over, but finding one is another issue in and of itself.
