I'd be down with Ed O. at DC for the Irish. We could do a lot worse than having him. And his recruiting ability sure wont hurt us as long as he shoots straight.

Whoever gets the job they will have a ton of talent to work with. Maybe this is why Diaco wasn't front and center with recruiting the past couple weeks.

Can someone post what Diaco was making? Do we know for sure the raises didn't happen after last year? Or is this just Chicken Little speculation? If indeed he's going to get $1.5M per annum to be the HC, would we expect ND to match that as a DC?

I don't know how much it was. But here's the way I look at it:

He just got a raise like 6 months ago and apparently that wasn't enough to keep him around as DC. It's not like we lost him to a Boise State, Northern Illinois, Central Florida type school that has done well the last few years. We lost him to a bottom dweller in the AAC. IMO, ND should be paying staff well enough so they don't take crappy HC jobs. Make it worth it for them to stick around until a decent gig comes along.

Fair point. I just prefer the 4-3 in general. Our MLB depth is pretty weak right now so it's not like it would be that hard to adjust. We would need to recruit more DT (which we should be doing anyway) but otherwise not much would change.

I'm with you. I'm partial to the 4-3 too, just makes me feel a little safer, a true 3-4 stresses me out.

The more I think about it, the best option is probably Derek Mason from Stanford. Runs a 3-4 and runs it really darn well. Would probably have to pay him a ridiculous amount of money, but he'd be at the top of my list.

I just think it's impossible to keep a Coordinator when he has an opportunity for his first HC job which should serve as a springboard to a larger job with 3-5 years particularly when he's likely doubling (or more) his annual salary. ND will be fine.

You think anyone in the country pays $1.5/year for a coordinator? They don't. This isn't Chuck Martin taking a $450k/year... this is a substantial amount of legitimate HC level money.

After Mason I'd probably look at Wisconsin's DC Dave Doeren. He's a very good coach and coaches linebackers, too.

I know that no one pays coordinators that much.

I still think ND DC > UCONN HC. That's the basis for my opinion.

I think New Brunswick is closest: Elliot gets a promotion to co-DC alongside Cooks and Ernest Jones becomes LB coach. Keep things in-house on defense.

Offense is another thing ... I fully expect Denbrock to get the OC job, so I'm expecting Kelly to hire a position coach. Don't know if he will make an outside hire a la Hiestand or if he will promote from within a la Booker. I think we need a QB coach, depending on whether Kelly will call plays or not. If Denbrock calls plays, then Kelly is our QB coach, and we promote someone like David Grimes to WR coach. If Kelly calls plays, then we hire a QB coach. I think calling plays and coaching QBs is too much for Kelly. Then again, I believe that was what he did his first couple years here, so maybe he will go back to that.

I agree. I doubt Diaco leaving had anything to do with what he was making as an assistant at ND. I think he just felt he was ready to be a HC, and he's from the northeast, so he liked the opportunity.

And UConn will likely be in the ACC (not AAC) sooner or later. They've been busting their asses to get in.

Well, it's not... not if the person wants to run their own show. Or if they value $$$. The "DC for life" people exist, but there are very few of them.

Got to be Cooks, Elston, or Denbrock, right?

Left Wisconsin for the Northern Illinois HC job a few years ago and is currently the HC at NC State.

Lax I am 100% hoping they give Ed O a call. He's a good coach and recruiter and I would have to think he would consider it the best Fuck You to USC

Yeah, I would think at least the "DC for life" people have given HC a shot somewhere at some point and realized it wasn't for them (the way that, say, engineers get promoted to middle management and suddenly hate their job). But they still had to try.

I'd rather they call Jim Heacock before hiring a guy like Ed O.

They will never make a big hire from outside, especially someone like Ed O. It'll be from within every time something like this happens

Anyone know what EdO was making as DC at SC? I can't imagine it was less than Diaco here...
