We'll see if there is any football substance to this man other than having been a freak talent for a specific position. To date, I haven't seen anything other than that on-field (almost isolated from the rest of the football team) playing career. I'll include the following general statement just to rile up the percentage of IE readers who cannot read comprehensively enough to catch what I am and am not saying --- and giving some opportunity to exercise themselves in righteous indignation in the off season ....
Sanders is a big extrovertive personality, who has an ability to insert himself into entertainment situations which a segment of American culture seems to like watching. There are a group of personalities who focus on labeling themselves "great"; labeling select others "great" or even "The Greatest of All Time" (I'm NOT taking a swipe at Ali here; this commentary has nothing to do with him other than that he established the phrase in modern culturespeak.) This sloppy use of "Great" by this segment of culture is so out of tone with any serious meaning of the word great, that the word has become degraded to near meaninglessness, though continuing to be a go-to adjective by commentators, especially in sports. Sanders epitomizes this concept degradation, but the shallow culture segment (mainly but by far not only a huge chunk of silly sports fans) loves the absurd fantasy of any of this being "greatness" and loves the (to me cringing) braggadocio spewed out by the "luminaries." (I've begun muting certain people when they show on TV. Humility is becoming a lost character quality.)
Media salivators and advertisers continue the consciousness focus on the Sanders of the world, and basically force him and other bragging egotists and self-sellers down the rest of our throats, maintaining these persons' marketability. I will guess that the average 18 year old might not have the savvy to see through that.
Having said that: Deion Sanders himself MIGHT be the best possible guy and the best possible coach --- I just haven't seen anything (either way) to make any judgement on him specifically. He MIGHT be all Show with little substance. It COULD be true that when a portalling player lands, and gets real information, he sees that too much of what he heard was simply BS, and transfers again. At a program as big as Colorado, Sanders better get one helluva coaching staff to do the actual real work. Splash and Braggadoccio should manifest themselves as just what they are pretty quickly in that stage. ... if one was a really good athlete, and it wasn't just some money take, why would any of them really want to sign up for this untried coach? Shallow attracts Shallow?
... anyway, if Deion Sanders is (despite his self-sell personality) really a great guy, I wish him well. SO HARD to imagine him as a head coach quality football mind, though.
